The National Water Commission,
CONAGUA, was founded in 1988.
It employs some 17,000 staff at the
headquarters in Mexico City, and
maintains 25 branches in the different
federal states and districts. The
Commission is responsible both for
the infrastructure works all over
Mexico and the planning, engineering
and management in this field.

The La Caldera pumping station –
flood control on a large scale.
Mexico City is situated on a plateau at an altitude of about 2,200 m above sea level.
Due to the geographical location, the options for natural rainwater run-off are very
limited. Heavy rainfalls frequently cause floods sweeping across parts of the city as
a mixture of rainwater and waste water. In an urban district particularly affected,
1.5 million inhabitants suffered from flooding on a regular basis.
How an exigency turned into a mega-project.
In order to protect the inhabitants against flooding in the long term, CONAGUA
initiated the construction of the by then largest and most important infrastructure
work in Mexico: the La Caldera pumping station with its channel for gathering waste
water is to ensure the draining and removing of rainwater and waste water from this
part of Mexico City and the surrounding areas.
A call for comprehensive support –
to be provided by KSB.
The heart of the work is the La Caldera waste water pumping station with a capacity
of 40 m³/s, which had to meet high expectations in terms of flow rate, head, efficiency
and maximum power input. In addition, CONAGUA expected special technical assistance as the requirements for key projects of this size need to be satisfied 100 percent.
To this end, the pump manufacturer must monitor each and every step while being
available to the project managers for help and advice on site. From the beginning, KSB
has done an excellent job. The design of both the pumps and sumps, which had to match
the hydraulic parameters, was discussed and conceived by KSB in close cooperation with
the project management. CFD calculations and tests with physical models revealed that
the very small sump diameter still was sufficient for this huge pumping station.
KSB stands out with know-how and unique service.
With KSB, the customer CONAGUA and the engineering contractor COTRISA found
a competent and reliable partner able to guarantee comprehensive support and assistance for all aspects of this major project. In close cooperation with KSB Mexico and
KSB Halle, it was possible to deliver all required pumps and accessories while still keeping within the budget. All pumps supplied met the technical specifications 100 percent.
From pipe design calculations with torsional analysis and assessment of natural frequencies, through model tests, installation and commissioning down to on-site test runs:
KSB delivered excellent work and services, to the full satisfaction of the customer.
Delivery by cargo aircraft.
KSB was also able to meet the tight delivery deadline. In order to deliver and commission
the first 10 pumps within a mere 5 months and the remaining pumps in 8 months,
KSB even chartered an aircraft. This allowed us to supply, install and put into service
the requested pumps on time. These services further consolidated KSB’s reputation with
CONAGUA and promoted trust and confidence throughout the entire project.
