Global rice production and trade in 2015-16 are forecasted as a marginal fall from previous year (1.67%) and (-7.14%) respectively . The world consumption and global carry over stock in 2015-16
are also anticipated to slightly decrease by (-0.21%) and (-0.84%) respectively.

India’s rice production has increased at CAGR of 1.43 percent during 2005-06 and 2016-16
Area under rice cultivation has not increased substantially during same period.

China was the leading rice producer followed by India, Indonesia and Bangladesh in 2015-16.

5. Major Exporting and Importing Countries of Rice in the world

India was the largest exporter of rice in 2015-16 followed by Thailand and Vietnam and Pakistan.

China was the leading importer in 2015-16 followed by Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

6. India’s Major Export Destinations for Basmati as well as Non-basmati Rice

In 2015-16, Saudi Arab was the leading importing country for Basmati rice from India followed by
Iran and UAE.
Unit price of basmati rice has decreased in 2015-16 over the previous years.

In 2015-16, Senegal, Benin and Nepal were amongst India’s top three importing countries
for non-basmati.
In 2015-16, Senegal imports substantially from India. It may be due to decrease in the unit price to
Rs. 17.59 thousand per Tons in 2015-16 from Rs. 18.05 thousand per Tons in 2014-15.

India exported substantial quantity of both Basmati as well as Non-basmati rice to the world, and
import in the same categories were insignificant during 2009-10 and 2016-17 (up to January
2017).
8. Domestic and International Price Movement for Long White Rice 25% Broken

 . Thai long grain high quality white rice is moving in the range of USD 380-385/T which is
down by 2.31%from last month price of USD 385/MT. Vietnam long grain high quality
white rice is moving in the range of USD 365-370/T which is down by 5% from last
month. Indian 5% high quality white rice is moving up from last month and currently at
USD 370-375/MT.

MSP for both quality of Paddy (see table 4) has increased during 2012-13 to 2016-17. This
figure has increased by 18 percent in the last 5 years.
