A change in policy is coming to
Maple-Valley Anthon-Oto High School.
On December 10, 2015, Mr. Dougherty
announced that there would be random
walkthroughs at MVAO. These walkthroughs
will include a drug dog. The students were
also told the search will be in two weeks and
after the first search it can happen whenever.
Dan Dougherty, principal of MVAO High
School, talked about the new policy change.
He stated it was taken to the board because of
increased incidents in our neighborhood and
a change in times. He believes that this will
help our students. “If these searches prevent
students at MVAO from participating in these
activities, then the new policy is successful,”
said Dougherty.
The search dog is a well-trained German
Shepherd. The school did not ask the police
department to buy this dog for these searches
or new policy, but if the dog is available and
the school is allowed to use it, they will take
the opportunity.
Dogs that are trained to find drugs are quite
expensive. According to K-9 Perspective, the
prices of buying a drug dog can range from
$2,500 to $3,500. Training the dog itself
can cost a fortune, with prices costing up to
$1,500 a month.
The dog has visited MVAO High School
since December 10. All students were to
get to a classroom and stay there until the
search was over. Also, even though students
aren’t allowed to carry bags, all bags in the
classrooms were to be put in the hallway. The
search did not take long, and is good for the
students at MVAO High School by keeping
our school drug free. There were no hits
during the search but the police department
planted illegal substances in a locker to test
the dog.
After the first search,
the officer and drug
dog may search the
building without
any warning to the
students, in hopes
of preventing drug
problems.

Wrestling season winds down Rams dribble into the new year
MVAO Wrestling
By Jacob Schaffer
The Maple Valley- Anthon Oto Rams
have had an interesting wrestling season this
year. They have dealt with adversity and
still managed to come out with some nice
victories.
The Rams have won eight of their eighteen
duals so far. The team also placed sixth
at the annual Kingsbury Invitational in
Mapleton and the Paul Fuhrman Invitational
in Cherokee. It has been so tough for the
Rams due to the amount of open slots the
Rams have been unable to fill due to the
lack of numbers. The Rams have also had
nu’’’’’merous wrestlers injured throughout
the season.
Jodi Walsh, the Ram’s head coach, says,
“We definitely don’t have quantity; we have
low numbers this year but what we have
is quality. We have some very talented
wrestlers on our team and others that work
very hard. Both of these factors are the
reason nine of our twelve wrestlers have
more wins than they have loses.” The Ram
Assistant Coach Samuel Hanson said, “I am
impressed with the kids and how hard they
work in practice. Some of the wrestlers have
come a long way from where they started
because they give it their all in practice. I’m
looking forward to what else this season has
in store for us.”
The Ram wrestlers are doing well
individually; nine of the twelve wrestlers
have positive records.

By Skyler McDermott
The beginning of January has been very
busy for the Rams basketball teams, with the
girls having 11 games within the first three
weeks of January and the boys having 10.
The girl’s team has picked up seven
losses and one win to bring in the new year.
Emalee Fundermann is the girl’s leading
scorer and she is also leading the conference
in scoring. Fundermann is averaging 22.5
points per game. Fundermann is also leading
the Rams and the conference in rebounding
with 8.3 rebounds per game. Marissa Ferris is
the next highest scorer, averaging 11.9 points
per game. Haylee Halbur is the next best
rebounder for the Rams with 5.5 rebounds
per game.
The boys team started off the year
with two losses and eleven. The boys lost their
first game of the season to IKM Manning on
January 4. When asked what they could have
done differently Senior Andrew O’Neal said
“We needed to execute our offense better, we
always stress that defense wins games. We
also gave up too many paint touches.” Paint
touches are letting the other team in the lane,
close to the basket.
The leading scorer for the boys is Juan
Delegarza with 11.8 points a game. The two
next highest scorers are Andrew O’Neal
with 9.8 points per game and Connor Beeck
with 9.5 points per game. Travis McBride is
the leading rebounder for the Rams with 5.5
rebounds per game.
Here are the stats of each varsity
player. It includes the total points, rebounds
and steals that they have gotten this year.

Senior spotlights
Cole Jensen
By JoHannah McKibben
On November 13, 1997, Mark Jensen,
Deb Jensen, and older sister Shelby Jensen
welcomed a new family member, Cole
Anthony Jensen.
Growing up Jensen has always loved
football. His favorite memory as a child was
attending his first Chiefs football game. The
first game was so much fun that the Jensen
family made it a tradition and go every year
now.
Jensen has participated in many school
activities such as football, wrestling, track,
NHS, and Gold Club. In high school two of
Jensen’s favorite memories were due to the
activities he participates in. His freshman
year of high school Jensen made it to state
wrestling. As a senior he and his team made
it to the state playoffs. Jensen played on the
offensive and defensive line. Also he was
named athlete of the week by Sioux City
Journal.
Jensen can be described as quite,
hardworking, sarcastic, funny, and easy to
get along with by his friends, teachers, and
parents. Jensen considers his closest friends
to be Andrew, Conor, Bailey, Jacob, Kyle,
and Micheal.
Over Jensen’s lifetime he has traveled
to four states. The states he has visited are
Arizona, Minnesota, Missouri, and Kansas.
A fear of Jensen’s are ghosts and a common
thing you hear him say is “come on now!”
After high school Jensen plans to go to
Iowa Central and play football. He wants to
major in landscaping.
Turner Petersen
By Anavin Mounivong
There are not very many people that can
be considered colorful by Mr. Scholl. One
person that is goes by Turner Alec Peterson.
Peterson was born September 23, 1997.
Peterson is the son of Holly and Daron
Peterson, and brother of Tye and Tanner
Peterson. His parents would describe him as a
work-lover because he loves to make money.
Along with that he is very persistent and
always very busy. Peterson is the youngest
in his family. As a kid Peterson enjoyed
throwing rocks across the room during nap
time with his friends.
In high school Peterson is a very goofy
student. Peterson’s closest friends is Travis
Mcbride because he thoroughly enjoys
being around him and he always has a plan
of action. Peterson’s other closest friend
is Dalton Kollbaum because they are close
golfing buddies in the summertime. His
friends would describe him as goofy and likes
to have fun and is always in a good mood. One
of Peterson’s favorite high school memories
was in his vehicle with Kollbaum jumping
terraces in the corn field. This originally
began with them out searching on Kollbaum’s
farm checking out the traps they had set out
but when doing so Peterson blew out a tire.
In school Peterson has been involved in choir
and baseball for 3 years, he stopped baseball
his senior year.
Peterson is a really adventurous gentleman
as well; he’s been to many places, those places
being: Florida, Hawaii, Finland, Mexico,
Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and
Texas. Peterson fears absolutely nothing. Not
death or even spiders, all you can say about
him is that he is entirely fearless.
Whenever you hear the words “You bet
Dave.” come out of Peterson’s mouth, it
means he is agreeing to the statement or
question you asked him. Something you may
not know about him is that he really enjoys
old cars.
Peterson plans on getting a job in the near
future.
Patrick Berry
By Skyler McDermott
Patrick Berry was born on February 20,
1998. His parents are Mary Berry and Robert
Bridgeman.
Berry’s favorite childhood memory is
playing in three feet of snow. His favorite
memory from high school is buying his first
car.
Something unique that not many people
know about Berry is that he was adopted at
age four.
Some of Berry’s closest friends are Adam
Jochims, Katrina Schmidt, and RJ Beckner.
They are his closest friends because they do
everything together.
Berry’s teachers would describe him
as shy, his parents would describe him as
smart, and his friends would describe him
as outgoing, crazy, and fun.
In the future Berry would like to become
a mechanic. Good luck with your future
Patrick!
“You bet Dave!” is one
of Petersen’s favorite
catch phrases
Tristan Cole Wunschel
By Nick Hollingshead
January 20, 1998, was the day when Larry
and Kathy Wunschel welcomed Tristian Cole
Wunschel into our great world.
Wunschel has 3 siblings. His siblings are
Claire his sister, and Colby and Jordan who
are his two brothers.
Wunschel’s favorite childhood memory
is playing on the local playground, usually
being tag or soccer.
His favorite high school memory is
sophomore year’s homecoming game and the
dance. He loves the music, and the thrill of
the sport.
Something unique about Wunschel that
nobody may know is that he rapped in an
underground club for seven years, and he
was dubbed king for five of those years.
Teachers would say Wunschel is creative
and good with words. Meaning he is able to
have strong conversations and is able to use
his mind to his fullest.
His parents would say that he is great with
kids. This is a great quality to have especially
when you have little siblings.
His friends would describe his as loyal and
trustworthy. These are two indispensable
qualities for friendships.
Wunschel’s biggest fear of all is heights.
It is a very common fear in many people.
Wunschel has traveled to Omaha. He went
all over Omaha because he was required
to go to the Omaha MEPS. The MEPS is
a place you go to after signing up for the
military. They evaluate you medically and
decide whether or not you are physically and
mentally able for the military.
Wunschel’s closest friends consist of Alexis
Poppens, Drew Knapp, Jaynie Nelson, and
Jayce Knapp. They are his closest friends
because they always have his back.
Wunschel’s school activities simply consist
of the school musical and group improve.
His future plans are to be an Infantry
Marine, then a chef, and then an author.

Ram Walking: “Ship” Names
Movie Review: The Force Awakens
By Anavin Mounivong
In this month’s Ram Walking, students
were tested to see how well they can figure
out fellow couple “ship” names. A ship name
is the combination of two couples, or lovers,
names. For example if Tom and Sally were
dating they’d be called Tally. Our contestants
were Freshman Adam Plautz, Sophomore
Logan Kollbaum, Junior Brady Gothier,
and Senior Rigoberto Beckner. The couples
that were used are Freshman Emily Gosch
and Junior Brett Weaver, Juniors Tanya
Hanks and Sammy Hopkins, Junior Skyler
McDermott and Senior Michael Swanson,
and Junior Shaylee Ames and Senior Austin
Peterson. Weaver and Gosch’s ship name
is Emett. Hanks and Hopkins’s is Tammy,
McDermott and Swanson is Skicheal, and
Ames and Petersen is Shastin.
The ship names were set up pretty simple.
How the ship names were decided was by
adding the first part of the female’s name and
the last half of the male’s name.
The first contestant is Brady Gothier
“Umm, is it Emily and Brett?” said Gother
unsure, “Tammy? Shoot, I don’t know this
one, as for Skichael duh, that is Skyler and
Michael.” After hearing Shastin he paused
and then replied with “Shaylee and Austin!”
One incorrect, ¾ total.
Next up is Adam Plautz. “Oh shoot,” cried
Plautz in anxiety “Uh, Emmet? Is it Emma
and… Emma and Mike? I don’t know. I don’t
have the slightest clue on the second one, I
don’t know. Skichael, that’s Skyler and…
Mitc- No, is it Michael? Shastin? Yeah, I
don’t have a clue.” Only one correct, but
for a ¼ total.
“Wait, so ship names? That’s for couples?”
stated Logan Kollbaum “Okay, the first one,
is Emma and… someone, I don’t know man.
This is hard, dude. As for the second one, I
just give up on that one. Yeah that’s Tristan
aaannd Annie? Skichael? The third on is
Skyler and… It sounds like Mitchel. The last
one sounds like Shaylee and Austin! I know
that one!” said Kollbaum with excitement.
Only one correct though, for another ¼ total.
The finial contestant is Rigoberto Beckner.
“The first one would be Emily and… -ett?
That would be Brett. Tammy? Heck, I don’t
know that one. The third one sounds like
Mitchel and whatever his girlfriend’s name
is. As for Shastin, is it like Austin and…
Shay?” Yet again another ¼ total.
Overall, congratulations to all the
contestants. There seems to be one victor,
Gothier, getting 75% of the couples.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, since midDecember release, has shattered box office
records by raking in a total of nearly two
billion dollars.
This movie was one I had been waiting
eagerly for since its announcement, and
fawning over since the trailers were released.
That’s why it came as a shock to me when I
realized it really wasn’t that great.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I thought the
new Star Wars film was great. It had earned a
93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 81%
from Metacritic. I thought it did great myself,
but only in certain respects. For instance,
the sound design and the cinematography
were spectacular. Mixing sounds from the
old movies while adding in new ones gave
the film a fresh twist, and when you have a
director like J.J. Abrams, expect great scenes.
That’s not to mention the writing! Abrams
also co-wrote the script, alongside Lawrence
Kasdan and Michael Arndt. Together, they
wrote a script that felt naturally flowing,
requiring minimal effort from the new
actors. Every quip, rant, gesture, and gag
was cleverly plotted. The writing also played
an instrumental role in the movie’s short-
Google.com
comings.
The prequels to the original trilogy were
written as something completely new. They
showed little to no plot symmetry with their
older counterparts. Unfortunately, and this is
just my opinion, the prequels were a colossal
failure. The die-hard fans of the original
trilogy and film critics everywhere were in
uproar, and not in a good way!
I can only assume the writers of The
Force Awakens wanted to avoid this very
scenario. However, they went too far, and
created what I saw as a carbon copy of A
New Hope, the series’ very first film. The
parallels became more and more obvious as
I continued watching. Instead of not being
good for taking too much creative freedom,
it wasn’t good for not taking enough creative
freedom. This lead to viewers being able to
see important plot points coming from miles
away, making what were supposed to be huge
moments rather anticlimactic.
I didn’t want to end on a sour note,
really. What the crew did well, they did
spectacularly. Honestly, I’d still rate The
Force Awakens at a 7.8/10.

Heap of the Month
By: Kyle Drees
If you see a red 1995 Chevy pickup
racing down the main drag in Mapleton, it’s
probably Tristine Boysen.
Boysen has had his pickup for a little over
a year now. In that year Tristine has come
up with two nicknames for his pickup, Ol’
Red and Code Red. Code Red is a very
appropriate name for it considering when
Boysen was asked what is wrong with it he
had quite the list. The list includes; leaking
coolent, burns a quart of oil every four days,
tires go low once a week, doesn’t shift into
second gear very well, break light, license
plate light, and gauge lights are all out, you
have to roll down the window to get out, and
the driver’s door doesn’t close all the way.
Boysen claims that the pickup breaks
down every other week and is always in the
shop, but he still loves his pickup. One of
his favorite memories in his pickup is a time
when he went mudding down a gravel road
with Cameron Golden and Jordan Goslar.
Golden and Goslar were standing in the back
of the pickup and Boysen broke off his mirror
by hitting a tree.
The next time you see a red Chevy pickup
racing by you, you will know it is Boysen.
Just be ready in a mile or two because he may
need a ride.
FFA hosts annual chili supper
By: Kyle Drees
On January 11 the school filled with the
sweet smell of cinnamon rolls for the annual
FFA chili supper.
The FFA chapter held their annual chili
supper where they recognized the new
Greenhand Degree recipients and Chapter
Degree recipients and held their fruit sale
auction.
To receive the Greenhand Degree the
individuals have to meet a few requirements.
These requirements are; be enrolled in
agricultural education and have plans for a
supervised agricultural experience program,
recite the FFA Creed, explain the FFA emblem
and colors, and apply for the degree. There
were 20 members of the chapter that qualified
and received their Greenhand Degrees, those
recipients are; Adam Plautz, Ely Fundermann,
Haley Drenkhahn, Cameron Boyle, Cheyanne
Ward, Haden Kuhl, Connor Beeck, Emmalee
Scott, Kassi Allen, Cameron O’Connell,
Brylie Boettcher, Katelyn Trucke, Tristan

Air Force comes to Mapleton
Nick Hollingshead
Members of the United States Air Force
paid a visit to Maple- Valley Anthon Oto on
Wednesday, the 13th of January.
During the visit many students at MVAO
were excited to see what the Air Force had to
offer in the areas of college tuition, payment,
medical benefits, retirement, and even
cheaper insurance. While the other branches
all have their own certain benefits, the Air
Force claims to have a benefit of 100 percent
in state tuition for colleges and universities.
These benefits are great incentive to sign
up for the military. Even if it is not the Air
Force specifically, any of the branches are a
great place to get opportunities for jobs. The
military also offers you the chance to feel
proud, earn respect, feel respect for yourself,
and to be a part of an elite team.
The military sends recruiters to scout for
new cadets. These cadets are people who
look for new challenges, a way to get away
from their current location, are looking for
help with college tuition. These recruiters
look for kids who have decent to high scores
on their ASVAB test. This test can determine
a student’s aptitude for the military. It gives
you a read out on where you are the strongest
and weakest, and where you would most
likely feel at home in the military branch
wise. For example, if a student got a high
score in the mechanical portion of the test and
decent levels on the math portion then a great
place for you would be working on vehicles.
Vehicles are in all branches so where you go
falls on how you would like to deploy or what
kind of vehicle you would like to work with.
All branches have different kinds of
regulations on how to deploy, tactics, rules
of combat, ranks, etc. While these things are
very similar, there are some major differences
between them. From the uniform to the
vehicles that they use, these differences are
what make up the branches and the unique
things about them.
There are many perks to being in the
military; from making friends to feeling selfrespect, people sign up for different reasons
and that is what is so special about it.
To be eligible to receive the Chapter FFA
Degree a member must meet the following
minimum qualifications: must have earned
the Greenhand Degree, have participated in
at least three official FFA functions, have
earned at least $150 on their SAE project,
and submitted a written application for the
Chapter FFA Degree. Alvin Pegram, Hayley
Knudsen, Tanya Hanks, Danielle Yockey, and
Kyle Sexton were the five individuals that
received their Chapter Degrees.
The FFA chapter also held their fruit
sale auction. For every item a member
sells during the fruit sale fundraiser they
get a ticket and the tickets are then used as
currency during the auction. Mr. Wimmer got
a total of $800 worth of prizes. The prizes
ranged everywhere from five gallon buckets
to FFA sweatshirts. The chapter brought in
Jack Seuntjens and Kurt Seuntjens to be the
auctioneers.
It was a good night for the FFA members
and their guest. Everyone left with a full
stomach and lots of people left with some
great prizes.

The German Shepherd, Rottweiler,
Doberman Pincher, Boxer, English Mastiff,
Bulldog, Bull terrier, Cane Corso, American
Bandogge Mastiff, Saint Bernard, Alaskan
Huskies, American Staffordshire terrier,
and now the American Pit Bull terrier;
are all dog breeds that either have been,
or are extremely misunderstood dogs and
supposedly “dangerous.” Many people
wanted to destroy some of these breeds, and
we did not let them before, so we cannot let
them do that now with Pit Bulls.
The American Pit Bull is a bulky and
extremely playful dog. Originally bred as
a farm dog, but latter evolved into a “nanny
dog” due to their overwhelming love and
gentleness with children. These dogs are
extremely loyal, energetic, loving, kind,
and family oriented. However Pit Bulls are
known to be exceptionally stubborn, but this
does not however make them a bad breed,
they will just need a little more time for
training.
In recent years Pit Bulls have become the
world’s most misunderstood, and persecuted
breed of dog. While this topic falls on the
debate of nature vs. nurture.
Pit Bulls (or Pits) have a very bulky,
almond-like shape. They have very well
defined muscles and square faces, which gives
the breed somewhat of a rough and tough
external appearance. Due to this appearance
dog fighters have taken a liking to the breed.
Dog fighters often use Pits for fighting dogs,
but they have also been known to be used as
bait dogs. A bait dog is a dog used to train
fighting dogs to be more vicious and cruel.
Fighting and bait dogs are usually raised
from the time they are born and are isolated
from humans.
I believe Pit Bull persecution is extremely
wrong. Our society has made this breed
look like a monster that will attack at any
possible moment. They are shunned due to
many misconceptions of the breed, and the
lack of awareness about the breed. So many
vicious stereotypes surround this breed that
the general public is afraid of them, and
those people often bestow their fear into their
children, other family members, and friends.
People think that Pits have always been
known as known as bad dogs; this is a very
common myth. Pits were actually known as
America’s dog. In WWI it was believed a Pit
Bull by the name of Sergeant Stubby was
a U.S. war hero for saving lives during the
war. Stubby was found in 1917 by Private
J. Robert Conroy while training in the fields
of Yale University. Conroy named the pup
Stubby due to its short stubby tail, and the
pup soon became the mascot of the 102nd
Infantry, 26 th Yankee Division. Stubby
trained with the troops, learning the drills,
bugle calls, and even a salute which he would
perform anytime the other soldiers saluted.
Stubby boosted morale and was allowed
to stay. Stubby was a true soldier, and he
was promoted to the rank of sergeant after
catching a German soldier mapping out the
Allied trenches, he then bit the spy’s legs
and didn’t let go until allied soldiers arrived.
This little Pit Bull served out country and
we continue to persecute and ban his breed.
Stubby was a hero and we should be treating
his descendants and breed with respect.
Stubby was properly trained and cared for
and he saved the lives of allied troops. This
proves it’s not the breed it’s how we care for
them that defines them,.
Many people also believe that all Pits
were bred for fighting, when actually only
3% of Pits are. Whereas the other 97% are
bred as work dogs, or companion dogs. Pits
make extremely good companion dogs due
to their overwhelming loyalty, kindness
and playfulness. Pits make excellent pets
due to their friendly disposition and their
generally good health. Pits require little to
no grooming, and are extremely intelligent,
however stubborn which requires just a little
more training.
There are many forms of legislation
keeping “dangerous” dog breeds from being
allowed in a city, state, or even country. Even
Sioux City has a ban on Pits or “Pit Bull like
breeds”. If a Pit is picked up by the pound
master in the city limits of Sioux City they
must be eradicated within ten calendar days,
unless claimed. I believe this is absolutely
terrible.
What people don’t understand is that Pits
don’t have a natural tendency to be vicious;
it’s the owners who make them that way. Any
dog, from a Pit Bull to a Poodle to a Yorkie,
could become vicious if it is neglected,
abused, or never shown any sort of affection
or love.
As a Pit owner myself I want to share
the unjust persecution of these incredible
dogs. My dog Keisha is a Pit Bull/Sharp
Pei mix, who loves to play and is extremely
loyal. She loves to cuddle and play with her
squeaky toys. She’s just a regular puppy. I
don’t understand how people could believe
that my Keisha could be a dangerous dog. I
just think it’s terrible what people think about
these dogs. They are not inherently vicious
but due to unfit owners some may become
frightened and lash out, marking them as
vicious monsters.
