3 Level Questions for Lord of the Flies
After you read the assigned chapter(s), prepare questions to discuss in class—
DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS!
The 3:15 rule does NOT apply to this assignment.
Ask three questions about the chapter(s) using the levels of questioning below. These
questions are ones you want to discuss with your classmates. Do not ask questions for which
you already know the answer.
Three types of questions:
Level One Questions: (Who, What, Where, When) Memorizing Facts
These questions can be answered by the text or by facts in other resources,
such as dictionary, encyclopedia, Google, etc.
Examples: Where were school children flying away from in the novel?
What symbols are in the text?
Who are the main characters?
Level Two Questions: (What and Why) Comprehension
These questions require comprehension, interpretation of the text.
Examples: Why does the author show Piggy cleaning his glasses?
Why is the color pink used repeatedly?
What is the significance of the island?
Level Three Questions: (Why and How) Application
These questions are open-ended and go beyond the text and intended to provoke a
discussion of an abstract idea or issue. For instance, consider ethical, moral, religious,
political, or psychological issues that relate to the text. Or you might consider how the
novel relates to current or historic events (WWII?).
Examples: Why does the author place the children on the island?
How does the author show the basic human nature of girls? Of boys?
Why does the author not have adults on the island?
Reader’s Response Journal:
For the remainder of the page, write a response to the chapter(s). Tell me what you like
about the text, what you didn’t like, observations that you had as you read about the way the
author told the story, connections to other literature that you have read, connections to
personal experiences or to current events that the story prompted.
Your response must fill up the remainder of the page.
