much our City has grown and improved in

YMCA Adventure Summer Camp
When the summer arrives and school is out kids are looking
for fun and creative ways to spend their time off. Parents are
also interested in providing fun and creative recreational activities for their kids during summer break. For many, summer camp is the best way to keep children busy and active
during this time. The City of Hialeah Gardens and the YMCA
sponsor a summer camp for children between the ages of 5
and 12 at Westland Gardens Park located at 13501 NW 107
Avenue.

formas divertidas y creativas de pasar su tiempo libre. Los padres
también están interesados en proporcionar actividades recreativas

The YMCA will offer a wide variety of activities for children
including, arts and crafts projects, participation in organized
group sports and tournaments, and supervised play. The children will also participate in weekly fieldtrips.

The camp will begin on Monday, June 12, and will run

between 1:30 p.m and 6:00 p.m. or North Pointe Youth Activity Center located at 6881 NW 179 Street, Miami, Florida,
Monday thru Friday between 1:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Registration is currently open.

The rates for this years’ summer camp is $100.00 (per week)

Meals are not included so each child must bring their own
lunch. Camp hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday
thru Friday.

Breuil Fussion Academy Art Camp
Breuil Fussion Academy is offering an Art Camp this summer at Westland Gardens Park, 13501 NW 107 Avenue,
Hialeah Gardens. Activites include Dance, Arts and Crafts,
Painting, Karate, and Cheerleading.
The camp will run from Monday, June 19, to Thrusday,
August 17, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There is $20 registration fee that includes the camp t-shirt.
The fee for the camp is as follows, $70.00 a week for BFA
students only. Hialeah Gardens residents will pay $100 a
week, with proof of residency, and non residents will pay
$110 a week. If you are interested in registering your child,

Breuil Fussion Academy está ofreciendo un campamento de arte

On March 7, 2017, Judge Betty Capote,
swore in our newly reelected Mayor and two
City Coucilmen. Mayor De La Cruz ran unopposed in this year’s municipal election and
received a four year term. Councilman
Rolando Piña and Councilman Jorge Gutierrez also ran unopposed therefore also receiving four year terms as is stated in our City
Charter. Congratulations to all our newly reelected City officials.
El 7 de marzo de 2017, la jueza Betty Capote,
juró a nuestro alcalde y dos concejales que
fueron nuevamente reelegido. El alcalde De
La Cruz se enfrentó sin oposición en las elecciones municipales de este año y recibió un
mandato de cuatro años. El concejal Rolando
Piña y el concejal Jorge Gutiérrez también se
presentaron sin oposición y por lo tanto también recibieron términos de cuatro años como
se establece en la Carta de la Ciudad. Felicitaciones a todos nuestros recién reelegidos
funcionarios de la Ciudad.

Seniors Give Back
On March 24, the seniors at our center
pooled their resources and were able to
collect much needed supplies for the
flood victims in Peru, where the deadliest
downpours in decades have caused landslides and rivers that have taken many in
their path.
The seniors collected water, canned food
items, hygiene items, and money which
they transported to the Peruvian embassy
for shipment to Peru.
Mr. Garibaldi, a member of our senior
center stated, “We are very fortunate to
live in this great country and to have the
means to help others so that is what we
decided to do.”
El 24 de marzo, los miembros de nuestro
centro para personas mayores se reunieron y colectaron suministros para las
víctimas de las inundaciones en Perú,
donde las lluvias más mortíferas en décadas han causado deslizamientos de
tierra y ríos que han llevado a muchos en

Nearly 25 years ago, the Autism
Society launched a nationwide effort to promote autism awareness,
inclusion and self-determination
for all, and assure that each person with ASD (Autism Spectrum
Disorder) is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life. This year the
goal is to go beyond simply promoting autism awareness to encouraging friends to become partners in a movement toward acceptance,
inclusion, and appreciation of the unique aspects of all
people. Let’s get one step closer to a society where those
with ASDs are truly valued for their unique talents and
gifts.

promover

conocimiento sobre el autismo, la
inclusión y la autodeterminación

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
released new data on the prevalence of autism in the
United States. This surveillance study identified 1 in 68
children (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls) as having autism
spectrum disorder (ASD). One in 68 U.S. children has an
autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a 30% increase from 1
in 88 two years ago, according to a new report released
by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Earth Day is April 22
Earth Day is a day intended to encourage awareness and
appreciation for the Earth’s environment. It is a worldwide environmental movement to build a healthy, sustainable environment, address climate change, and protect the
Earth for future generations. Everyone needs to be empowered with the knowledge to inspire action in defense
of environmental protection.
Environmental education leads to knowledge, the
knowledge necessary for accelerating green technologies
and jobs.
The first Earth Day celebrations took place in 1970. It
is now observed in 192 countries, and coordinated by the
nonprofit Earth Day Network, chaired by the first Earth
Day 1970 organizer Denis Hayes, according to whom
Earth Day is now "the largest secular holiday in the world,
celebrated by more than a billion people every year." In
2009, the United Nations designated April 22, as International Mother Earth Day.
This Earth Day, look for ways to get involved in your
community.

El Día de la Tierra es un día destinado a fomentar la conciencia y el aprecio por el medio ambiente y el planeta. Es

West Hialeah Gardens Elementary
Author’s Tea at West Hialeah Gardens Elementary
West Hialeah Gardens Elementary celebrated its second
Authors’ Tea of the 2016-2017 year on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. Nineteen students from Kindergarten to
5th Grade were recognized for outstanding achievement
in the area of Writing. The students were invited to attend
the “tea” along with their families. This wonderful event
was hosted by the school’s Principal, Sharon Gonzalez
and Media Specialist, Roland Adames. The school’s PTA
provided refreshments and decorations.
The young authors were Denisse Delgado, Allyson
Dimas and Lucas Teijeiro from Kindergarten; Adriana
Cordero, Steven Fonseca and Steven Pato from Grade 1;
Sergio Fernandez and Luis Sanchez from Grade 2; Audrey Banos, Kaylen Gonzalez, Carla Moya and Daniel
Valladares from Grade 3; Nathalie Cabrera, Dairely
Dosal, Luna Morena and Elizabeth Ramudo from Grade
4; and Nathalia Chavarria, Valerie Randall and Masielle
Rodriguez from Grade 5. The students read their writings
and received Certificates of Recognition and Gift Bags.

parents were then
treated to a special presentation
by a Guest Author
– Meteorologist,
Erika
Delgado
formerly
the
weekend morning
meteorologist for
NBC 6 News.
As a journalist,
Ms.
Delgado,
shared with the
students the importance of writing, not only in her chosen
field of Meteorology but, in every walk of life. She urged
the young authors to write often because, as with anything
you pursue, the more you practice it, the more you perfect
it.

de Autores del año escolar 2016-2017, el miércoles 25 de enero
de 2017. Diecinueve estudiantes del Kindergarten al 5to grado
fueron reconocidos por sus logros sobresalientes en el área de Escritura. Los estudiantes fueron invitados a asistir al "té" junto con

Child Abuse and Prevention
Amigos For Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect,
launches its annual Blue Ribbon
Awareness Campaign commemorating April’s National Child
Abuse Prevention Month
“Child abuse and neglect is a
growing national epidemic that
takes the lives of four children
daily, 70.7% of those are under
the age of 3.— a staggering,
frightening and unacceptable statistic,” said Rosa Maria Plasencia, President and CEO of Amigos For Kids. In 2004, Amigos
for Kids, began the blue ribbon effort and in 2005, the There’s
NO Excuse for Child Abuse!® Blue Ribbon Campaign began to
raise the public’s awareness of the devastating effects of child
maltreatment. This April, as in past years, Amigos for Kids will
honor the lives lost to child abuse and will educate the community about the importance of fostering healthy and safe family
environments.
This year, Miami-Dade County Schools and Amigos For Kids
Blue Ribbon Awareness Event at the Miami Dade County Auditorium will bring students and parents together for a talent show
with musical performances, dance, and more to raise awareness
for the cause. Schools will honor National Child Abuse Prevention Month with a safe and nurturing learning environment for
students to flourish and thrive. Amigos For Kids staff will visit
schools throughout the year with educational material for children. The annual Blue Ribbon Child Abuse Prevention poster
contest finalists will be announced, and artwork will be displayed
on www.amigosforkids.org.

Nationally an estimated 1,580 children died of abuse and neglect
at a rate of 2.13 per 100,000 children in the national population
and over 3.6 million cases of abuse or neglect were reported according to the most recent annual data. What is even more alarming is that four-fifths of child abuse fatalities involved at least
one parent. It is estimated thatvictims of abuse are: 44% White,
21.8% Hispanic, and 21.0% African-American..
75% suffered neglect.
17% suffered physical abuse.
8.3% suffered sexual abuse.
6% suffered physical maltreatment.
2.2% suffered medical neglect.

Each American household uses an average of 94,000 gallons of water per year. We drink an average of 1 billion glasses of tap
water per day. We often take this daily convenience for granted. It is in everyone’s best interest to be aware of this precious
resource in order to conserve and protect it from many risks.
Source Water Protection
Source water is untreated water from streams, rivers, lakes, or underground aquifers, which is used to supply private wells and
public drinking water.
Preventing drinking water contamination at the source makes sense:
• Good public health sense
• Good economic sense
• Good environmental sense
Preventing contamination of drinking water supplies is an important mission within the City of Hialeah Gardens.

Report Illicit Discharges
An illicit discharge is defined as any discharge to the municipal separate storm sewer system that is not composed entirely of storm
water, except for discharges allowed under a NPDES permit or waters used for firefighting operations. These non-stormwater discharges occur due to illegal connections to the storm drain system from business or commercial establishments.
As a result of these illicit connections, contaminated wastewater enter into storm drains or directly into
local waters before receiving treatment from a wastewater treatment plant. Illicit connections may be
intentional or may be unknown to the business owner and often are due to the connection of floor drains
to the storm sewer system. Additional sources of illicit discharges can be failing septic systems, illegal
dumping practices, and the improper disposal of sewage from recreational practices such as boating or
camping.

Un desecho ilícito significa cualquier desecho al sistema municipal de vias públicas de alcantarillado que no sea aguas de tormentas, excepto desechos permitidos por NPDES o de aguas que se use para operaciones de incendios. Estos desechos ilícitos
ocurren cuando hay conexiones ilegales hechas al alcantarillado por negocios o establecimientos comerciales. Como resultado
de estas conexiones ilegales, aguas contaminadas entran al alcantarillado directamente y no se llegan a procesar quimicamente
en la planta. Conexiones ilegales pueden ser intencionales o pueden ser desconocidas por los dueños de negocios y muchas veces
son causadas por la conexión de desagüe directamente al sistema de alcantarillado. Otras prácticas tales como el vertido de productos ilegales, sistema séptico que no funcione bien, desecho inadecuado de aguas residuales también contribuyen a la contaminación del agua potable.
