THE WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS
We have often heard tell of “those people.” That is those people from the wrong side of the tracks.
Those people were looked down on; made fun of and often times ostracized. “How dare one associate with
them, much less marry someone from the wrong side of the tracks.” Who are “they?” and how did we come
to dissociate from them?
Well it began years ago when the railroad would come through towns. At that time locomotives were
steam powered. Wood and coal were used to fire the engines. Black smoke would bellow from the top of the
engine and soot would coat the surrounding buildings, houses and any clean laundry hung out to dry. It
wouldn’t take much time to discover the direction of the prevailing winds and which houses were more prawn
to receive the constant black dusting.
Those individuals who were financially wealthy quickly bought land and rebuilt fine new homes on
“the right side of the tracks.” There, their businesses, houses and clothing stayed cleaner. However, those
who could not afford to make the move remained and endured life best they could. Over time, it was easy to
recognize which side of the tracks a person belonged. Their faces and clothing and their children’s clothing
were never entirely clean. Eventually they were looked down upon, mocked and labeled. They were “from
the wrong side of the tracks.”
Even before trains and coal dust, societies would still divide, often still, between the haves and the
have nots. Many in Jesus’ day, were looked down on by the religious sects such as the Sanhedrin, the Sadducees and the Pharisees. It was scandalous that Jesus would actually associate with people apart from these
special groups. Those living on the wrong side of the tracks in Jesus’ day were not only the poor, but also the
lepers, prostitutes, tax collectors, and sinners. How dare a teacher sent from God talk to, touch or enter into
“those people’s” homes.
The wonderful thing about the New Testament church is it was made up of so many of the wrong side
people. The reality is that we are all wrong side people. We are all sinners. We all have been on the wrong
side of God. I’ve never met a man who’s life was not stained by sin. The prevailing winds of this world have
covered and coated each one of us. James warned the church of showing partiality. My brethren, do not hold
the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. 2 For if there should come into your
assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy
clothes, 3 and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, “You sit here in a good
place,” and say to the poor man, “You stand there,” or, “Sit here at my footstool,” 4 have you not shown
partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brethren: Has
God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to
those who love Him? (James 2:1-5).
When we look at people, are we looking through our own eyes, the eyes of this world or the eyes of
Christ? When was the last time we crossed the tracks? Chances are we will find Jesus there.

MEET DANIEL J. ABRAHAM
This morning we are privileged to welcome brother Daniel Abraham. Daniel was born in
France and raised in Egypt and Kuwait. For 39 years he followed the Islamic faith. Arabic was his
first language and lived his life by the Quran. When he left Egypt and came to America in 1992, he
began a life of drugs and alcohol yet still praying to Allah 5 five times a day.
While still a Muslim, he married a Christian woman, her name is Lynn and she is a Lieutenant
Colonel in the US Army currently stationed in California. Together they have 3 children. Initially
when she shared Christ with him, he refused to listen. Eventually, ready to commit suicide, due to the
hypocrisy he found himself living in, he called out to Jesus. On that day Daniel was saved and in his
words God has been transforming him ever since.
He is a veteran who has served in Operation Iraqi Freedom as a military intelligence soldier and
Arabic translator in a Special Forces Unit. Injured and medically discharged in 2008, he returned
home where God eventually opened a door at Carolina College of Biblical Studies in Fayetteville
where he continues to attend.
Most every Sunday, Daniel gets an opportunity to share in area churches what God has done in
his life. This morning he will be sharing during our joint Sunday School hour and bringing our message during worship.
TRUE GENEROSITY
So many Sunday mornings as the offering is taken we hear prayers that include a familiar
phrase that goes something like this: “Lord, use these gifts for the building of your kingdom.” However, within many churches, such prayers are offered, but what sadly is often meant is, “Lord, use these
gifts for the building of our kingdom.”
We live in a selfie generation. It’s almost become normal to point our camera in order to focus
on ourselves. NOT SO FOR BAPTIST CHAPEL! As the Apostle Paul praised churches for their sacrificial giving, so must I praise God for you. Our tithes and offerings are not just being used to build
“our kingdom.” They are generously being used to build God’s kingdom. If you didn’t know: your
generous love gifts have exceeded our church’s needs nearly every month this year. And as a result we
are faced with a choice. We could look for things to spend the excess on ourselves or turn our camera
away from us and onto the world.
At our last business meeting our Finance Committee made a recommendation at to give
$10,000 to help with the building of the Mingo Hispanic Mission. This was discussed and you decided
we could still do more and $15,000 was sent. We pray that God would use our gifts for the building of
His kingdom, we are seeing it happen. Thank you Baptist Chapel for not only saying we have faith,
but also putting our faith in action. Keep giving, keep growing, and keep blessing.

A Note from Jason
Dear Baptist Chapel church,
Hello! This is Jason Faircloth in Puerto Escondido, Mexico.
Kate, Abraham and I are all doing very well serving here with
Global Education Ministries at our elementary school. Our third
school year is winding down very quickly and we are busy
finishing this year and preparing for next year!
I wanted to send this letter on behalf of our family to say thank you for financially supporting
us! You have always given a very significant amount of money to sustain us so that we could
continue to serve children and their families for the sake of the gospel. Everyday at our school
children are exposed to the gospel, talked to about Jesus and shepherded toward the King
shepherd who otherwise would not go to church anywhere. Puerto Escondido is a city with lots
of lost, sad people and our local church body, El Faro, is being strengthened to effectively
reach these people for Jesus. When our children hear about Jesus and make decisions to live
for him, you help that come about by your support. We are dependent on people being moved
by God to give to support us and He has consistently used you to meet our needs. You truly
are a part of our team and a vital part of the good that God is doing here in Puerto. We consider you vital co-laborers with us for the gospel! So thank you! Thank you for faithful and sacrificial will to support us!
We love you all and thank God for you! Baptist Chapel is a forward operating base of believers
striving to reach people in Autryville and we are encouraged by your love and support. Thanks
again!
Philippians 1:3 I thank my God every time I remember you!

DO PEOPLE CHANGE?
We have all seen people we know walk to the front of the church and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior of their
lives. We have all wondered afterward if these same people are truly saved because we don’t see a change in
their life style. Maybe those same people have said the same thing about us. Can the people that are closest to
us see a change in our life? Can others see Jesus in our actions, our conversations, the places we go, etc.?
The people that are closest to us are the ones who know us best. They tend to know whether we are being honest or dishonest. Those people could be our parents, spouses, children, friends, etc. There are times when we
can even fool the people who know us best. However, there is someone we can never fool. God knows our
hearts. He knows our deepest, darkest secrets no matter how far back we try to hide it. When a person makes a
profession of faith, these same people that were mentioned earlier have an idea if its real or not. We may be
religious like the Pharisees where we put on a good show on the outside but are still rotten with sin on the inside. “Putting on a show” is not being a witness for Christ; it actually is a deterrent to the lost. Being a Christian doesn’t make you better than the sinner. Acting like you are better is the opposite of being a Christian. We
are to be Christ like. There is nowhere in the Bible that I have found where Jesus considered himself better
than those around him. Jesus provided us the example of serving others; not being served by others.
We are to love others as we are loved. We aren’t going to win souls to Christ or make disciples through scare
tactics, through force, by condemnation or hypocritical lifestyles. We are to win souls to Christ through prayer
and genuine love. When you have been washed by the blood of Jesus, you are changed from the inside out, not
from the outside in. People should notice the change in your life. Christians should be set apart from the rest of
the world. A lot of Christians today try to be a part of both. The Bible tells us that we can’t serve both God and
Satan. The Bible also tells us that there are going to be people who think they are going to Heaven only to be
turned away. These are church going people who have a head knowledge of Christ but not a heart knowledge.
These are the people that have never truly surrendered unto Christ. These are the same people that their family
and friends are questioning if they are truly saved? How can they be saved if they act no different than we do?
What gives them the right to condemn us when we know what kind of person they were before the “change”?
When we ask Jesus to save us, He forgives us of our sin. He doesn’t bring them back up and use as a weapon
against us. Isn’t that what people so often do? So many times we like to remind people of who they were and
not who they are. Don’t be a “holier than thou” Christian. Be a Christian that loves others as you are loved by
Christ. We should all pattern our lifestyle after Christ such that we can be more effective witness for Him.
Sincerely,
Scott Brown
