Winter 2016
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
T
he buzz at Mooredale house is
evident as Preschool, Orchestra,
Fall programs and sports keep
everyone active and engaged and sign up
approaches for the Winter activities.
With the Hallowe’en trick or treating
behind us and the goblins and ghouls
being put away for another year, the
holiday season is fast approaching. Our annual Mooredale
Winter Wonderland on Saturday, December 3 will follow up on
last year’s very successful event.
Our Annual General Meeting is Wednesday, November 16,
at which members will elect directors for the next year. The
biographies of the nominees proposed by the Nominating
Committee are at page 10. As the current board’s term
ends, I would particularly like to thank Christina Staikos,
our Preschool director, and Anuja Sharma, our Volunteer
& Community Liaison director, who have both contributed
so much during their time on the board and will now be
departing from the board. Christina facilitated the installation
of a new security system for the Preschool Classrooms on the
ground floor of Mooredale House and Anuja provided much
help in the area of volunteer recruitment for Mayfair.
As the year ends, I want to ensure that we recognize the
many dedicated staff members who do so much to make
Mooredale such a wonderful community and to keep it
operating so smoothly. Marjorie Booth, our Executive Director,
together with Joanna Ingram, Susan Li, Catherine Loeffler,
Eric Musselman, Carolyn Burgess, Silviu Butnaru, Breanna
Van Abbema, Riccardo Nero, Erin Ciona, Julie Chambers
and Ignacio Mateo together are a team second to none. We
couldn’t deliver our activities without all the talented teachers,
instructors, lifeguards, counsellors, conductors, and part-time
staff – we salute you all.
Looking forward to Winter, I hope you take advantage
of the new programs offered this season: Karate for 4-5
yrs, Nature for Preschoolers, Computer Coding at Whitney
After Four, and the ever popular Learn to Skate, and Ski &
Snowboard Club. See all the details in the Winter Recreation
Guide, in this newsletter.
Happy Holidays from the Mooredale family to your family.

Delicious, Delightful December
We always look forward to December and every year we wonder
how we will fit everything into our busy lives. Remember to enjoy
the season and celebrate what makes the holidays so special. Here
are a few ways you can celebrate at Mooredale:
The Mooredale Winter Wonderland is a fabulous time for
•
family fun together and capture the moment with the famous
SC without the long line-ups you will find in other locations –
Saturday December 3rd from 9:00am to 1:00pm
Holiday baking is deliciously tempting at the Santa’s Sweet
Boutique; if you are baking your family treats, make a few
extra and bring them along anytime Friday, December 2
(remember to list ingredients on each package)
•
Mooredale News is published 6 times a year for members of
the Rosedale-Moore Park Association. Publication dates are
Sept/Nov/Jan/March/April/June. Ad specs and rates are found at

time of year… we hope you will enjoy Winter Wonderland this
year and bring your family and neighbours too!
Jubilant, Jaunty January
Hurray for the bright new beginnings that we embrace in the New
Year. We can change personal patterns, discover new talents and
celebrate the fact that the days are actually getting longer!
Throughout January, take advantage of the new activities you
can do through Mooredale:
Ski and Snowboard Club kids will take off to the slopes on
•
January 18!
Registration for Camp and Summer Fun is officially open so
•
choose your week(s) and sign up early.
Pool Club members are able to renew for the 2017 season and
•
new members are welcome too.
Think spring and volunteer to help with our Mayfair event – we
•
need planning and organizational help now, as well as folks to
do shorter volunteer tasks on the biggest event of the year –
Friday May 12 from 5 to 9 and Saturday May 13 from 9 to 5
This truly is a magical time of year. Happy Holidays from all of
us at Mooredale House to all of you – and hearty good wishes for a
terrific New Year!

Think globally,
act locally
We are constituted so that simple acts of kindness, such as giving
to charity or expressing gratitude, have a positive effect on our
long-term moods. The key to the happy life, it seems, is the good life:
a life with sustained relationships, challenging work,
and connections to community. Paul Bloom
We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about
progress and prosperity for our community. Our ambitions must
be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others,
for their sakes and for our own. Cesar Chavez
I am a huge believer in giving back and helping out in the
community and the world. Think globally, act locally I suppose.
I believe that the measure of a person’s life is the affect
they have on others. Steve Nash
Winter 2016
A
ffecting others… including others… prosperity for our
community… positive effect on long-term moods. These and
more are the characteristics we hope to build into all our
Mooredale programs as we strive to reach our mission of being a
focal point in the community. Participating in Mooredale programs
is just as much about the ‘who’ as the ‘what’!
Have a suggestion?
Our best and longest running programs usually start from a
suggestion from a Mooredale member. Do you have an idea for a
program that the community would benefit from or that you would
like to see for your family? Would a class listed in our guide suit you
better at a different time? Be sure to let us know because maybe
others have said the same thing! Email us today at programs@
mooredale.on.ca or call 416-922-3714 x 105.
6 Ways to Connect with Your Community this
Winter at Mooredale

and feel good while doing it! There are fitness classes Monday,
Wednesday and Friday mornings, and a Pilates class on Thursday.
Sign up for one or all four! Meet some other ladies from the
neighbourhood and strengthen your body at the same time.
Remember that how you treat your body today is the best way to
ensure your health twenty years from now!
Creative Movement: Creative Movement uses structure and free
movement to help each child discover his or her body’s capabilities.
With Interplay School of Dance instructor Miss Natalia, children
will discover the magical world of dance, how their bodies react to
music and how much fun they can have trying to master it.
Learn to Ski: Our popular Learn to Ski program for 4 – 12 year
olds will return this winter, in partnership with Earl Bales Ski &
Snowboard Centre. The classes will run Wednesday and Thursday
evenings with bussing provided from Mooredale and Whitney

again be provided.

popular program time of the day here at Mooredale. There are

CAMP DIRECTOR
W
e had a wonderful summer here at Mooredale Day Camp
and we have many fond memories from the action
packed eight weeks. Don’t take our work for it, here is
what our parents had to say about their 2016 experience:
“I personally found all of your staff so friendly and helpful –
especially Ali. Even the parking was managed really well with
friendly faces leading the way to open spaces and waving
goodbye as we left. Such a nice community feel all around.
We’ll be back for sure next summer!” ~ Kate
“I wanted to send a quick note to thank you and all the
Mooredale staff for a wonderful summer! You had an
incredible group of staff this summer who were clearly quite
dedicated to making each and every child feel welcome and
engaged! (My son) loved his summer and was actually quite
sad this evening (knowing that camp is finished).” ~ Bettina
“Thank you so much. We have been to several camps over
the years but this camp was by far the most welcoming,
with genuinely caring counselors. We loved the pool, tennis,
science activities, hot lunch and day trip. The kids are excited
to come back next year. Just wanted to reach out to say you
are all doing a great job and your hiring processes seem to be
stellar!! Thanks and have a great year.” ~ Alyssa

Success and Fun at
Mooredale Terry Fox
Run!
I
t was a beautiful day for the 2016 Mooredale Terry Fox Run.
Participants showed their spirit in Terry Fox t-shirts and arrived
early to set off through the streets and ravines of Rosedale and
Moore Park to raise funds for cancer research. A lively atmosphere
was created by local rock band Penny Benjamin who entertained the
crowd with a fun concert as racers were returning.
Terry said, “It’s got to keep going without me.” And on Terry Fox
Run day, our community did just that. The Mooredale site raised over
$25,000 this year. Of special note was a group of University of Toronto
cancer researchers, “Team Brown Lab et. al.”, who celebrated their
tenth year of participating in the Mooredale race and have collectively
raised over $50,000 in that time.
Special thanks to the many community members and students
who so generously volunteered their time to help make this
year’s run such a success! Thank you also to Summerhill Market,
Starbucks, Loblaws and Longos for providing refreshments for all.
It is always a special day to celebrate Terry’s legacy and to help
keep alive his dream of finding a cure for cancer.

SOCCER
We hosted our fourth annual Soctoberfest soccer tournament on
October 1. This year’s tournament saw the club’s young technical
staff test their skills against the experienced coaches in the club.
Experience won out over youth, as the young’uns lost 6-1 in the
rain. Special thanks to Amsterdam Brewery who returned as a
sponsor again this year, and to everyone who came out and braved
the cool temperatures and rain!
2016 Outdoor House-League Soccer Wrap-Up
Competitive & Rep Development Program
Another successful Outdoor House-League Soccer season is in
the books! Both Rosedale Park and De La Salle were abuzz with
activity on Saturday, September 24 as the final games of the
2016 season were played, providing the loyal fans with some
lively and entertaining soccer. Returning division sponsor Forest
Hill Orthodontics’ tent was a popular stop for players, coaches,
and fans alike as everyone at Rosedale Park was treated to some
delicious pizza. Once teams finished their final games, they
headed over to Mooredale SC’s tent to collect their medals and
another tasty treat – cookies from another division sponsor, Tim
Hortons. Our U12 and U14 divisions enjoyed pizza at De La Salle,
where winners were crowned after hard-fought final games. The
following day, the final soccer games to be played at Rosedale
Park were played by our U17, men’s, and women’s divisions.
A big thank you goes out to all our volunteers this year – the
coaches, managers, and snack-schedule coordinators! Your help
and support throughout the season helped make 2016 another
great year for recreational soccer here at Mooredale!
Our developmental and competitive teams were successful yet
again this summer. From victories at tournaments and festivals,
to strong performances in the league, our teams certainly did
Mooredale proud this season. The indoor season is set to kick off
shortly, with our teams training hard and testing their skills in local
leagues. Go Mooredale!

before then!

the start of our outdoor hockey season is coming up just as
quickly! Our league is perfect for those players looking for a more

On behalf of the SWIMMING POOL CLUB EXECUTIVE
B
aby, it’s cold outside. I am not sure
if the cold makes me think more of
warm, sunny pool days or not! This
time last year, James was reporting all about
fall pool repairs and upgrades, but the news
this year is that the pool is in fabulous shape.
It is merely sitting empty, eagerly awaiting
the May holiday weekend and the first
swimmers of the season.
The time to sign-up for the pool is now.
In previous years, we have had a long wait
list but right now it is virtually guaranteed
that anyone on the list today will be in the
pool come the May holiday weekend! Take
advantage of this true gem in the heart
of the city today. There is no cost and no
obligation to be placed on the waitlist.
Anyone interested should call 416-922-3714

The countdown resumes until May 20
opening weekend… that magic number IS
indeed getting lower.
On behalf of the entire pool committee,
I would like to wish a very happy holiday
season to all our Mooredale staff and
members. See you in May!
