RULES
General rules
• The number of players allowed on the court is six. A minimum of five players is permitted
to begin or continue a game. It is strongly recommended that each team have a minimum of
two substitutes if a player becomes injured during the game.
• The score is tallied using the rally point system; in other words, a point is scored after
every rally.
• A game has two sets of twenty-five points each, plus a third set of fifteen points in the
event of a tie after the first two sets (if each team wins a set).
• Depending on the duration of the previous match, teams have ten to fifteen minutes before
each game to get ready and warm up. If a team is not present when the game is scheduled
to begin, it loses by default and the opposing team is declared the winner.
• If the previous game runs late, the teams have a minimum of five minutes (straight-time) to
warm up.
• There may be one 30-second time-out period per game.
• It is strictly forbidden for one or more boys to play on a girls’ team; however, one or more
girls may play on a boys’ team.
• The referee determines the height of the net. The official net height for girls is 2m in the 10
to 12-year-old category, and 2.10m in the 13 to 15-year-old category, and 2.24m in the 16
to 18-year-old category. For boys, the official net height is 2.10m in the 10 to 12-year-old
category, 2.24m in the 13 to 15-year-old category, and 2.35m in the 16 to 18-year-old
category. These net heights apply for the duration of the Inter-school Games.
Mixed teams
If a team is mixed, the category and height of the net will be determined according to the
age of the oldest boy on the team. Boys will not be allowed to block a girl attacking at the
net. However, the same restriction does not apply to girls. To make the game more
challenging, boys should be placed across the net from each other. Seeing as the goal is to
have as many participants as possible, teams should agree on certain rules in case there
are not many teams registered.
F IRST N ATIONS E DUCATION C OUN CIL I NTER -‐ SCHOOL G AMES Contact with the ball
• The ball may come into contact with any part of the body.
• Double hitting is prohibited at all times.
F IRST N ATIONS E DUCATION C OUN CIL I NTER -‐ SCHOOL G AMES Service
• The server can occupy any position behind the back line.
• If the ball touches the net but clears it onto the opponent's court, the service is valid and the
rally continues.
Team rankings
•
Teams are ranked according to the number of wins and losses they accumulate during the
preliminary round.
•
In the event of a tie in the ranking, the winning team is the one that won the game played
between the two teams.
•
"Points for" are calculated according to the points scored by the player's team.
•
"Points against" are calculated according to the number of points allowed by the player's
team.
•
If a tie persists, the difference between the points scored by the team and the points
allowed by the team is calculated (points for and points against).
•
If needed, the ranking of the two teams is determined by a draw.
