In September, the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA added new group exercise classes to our current offerings. Additionally, the Y will now open at 5:00 am.
“Back to Abs,” offers non-stop dedication to the mid-section! This class mixes functional

Also new to our programming is a familiar class with a new twist. “TRX Core” will be offered
Thursday evenings from 7:30 pm to 8:00 pm and provides a workout specific to the core muscles utilizing a unique and
popular training technique.
The Y will also be offering our familiar 50 minute Yoga class at an additional time. The class will continue to be offered
Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:00 pm and will also be offered Saturday mornings at 8:30 am.
Don’t forget, all of our group exercise classes are a value added member benefit, so come and see what group exercise is
all about!
YMCA 90 DAYS TO GREAT - Join the
challenge and together we will make a difference!
Take the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA 90 Days to GREAT (Goals, Recreation, Exercise, Awards and Teamwork) challenge
and become part of a community that’s committed to helping you achieve a balance of spirit, mind and body, AND earn
big rewards. This program will run October 16-January 14.
To bring about meaningful change, individuals need ongoing encouragement. That’s what makes the 90 Days to GREAT
program so special. Participants will meet with Y staff three times over 90 days, make 30 visits to the Y and achieve
measurable Healthy Living Goals. Each participant will be assigned a Y advocate to help them discuss and set healthy
lifestyle goals, check on their half-way progress, adjust their strategy to ensure success and to officially log their success.
By successfully completing the 90 Days to GREAT program, you will earn big rewards. Participants receive a free pedometer, a 90 Days to GREAT t-shirt, and are entered into a drawing for 50% off their YMCA Adult Membership price.
There is a $5 registration fee for the 90 Days to GREAT program. Registration is limited to 50 participants. Participants
must be at least 18 years of age and be members of the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA. The registration brochure can be
found online at www.sidney-ymca.org or at the YMCA Welcome Center.
5K WALK/RUN OFFERS BRAND NEW COURSE
Over 175 participants took part in the seventh annual YMCA 5K Walk/Run, sponsored by the Spot Restaurant, in conjunction with the Shelby County Applefest on Saturday, September 10. Additional event sponsors included the City of
Sidney, Ernst Sporting Goods and the Dannon Company. The race, featuring a new race route began at 8:30 am in front
of the Shelby County Courthouse on Main Street, in the midst of Applefest, halfway between Court St. and Poplar St. At a
designated spot inside Tawawa Park, participants turned around and retraced the same course leading them back to the
Start/Finish line. This year’s race events were provided by Byron Kimmel with Alliance Running. The event kicked-off with
the playing of the National Anthem by Diann Nussbaum on trumpet.
Trophies were presented to the overall female Winner, Jenni King of Botkins with a time of 22:24 and the overall male
winner, Aaron Bauer of Houston with a time of 15:57. Additionally, first, second and third place winners were presented
with medals in each of the male and female race categories.
For additional results visit www.sidney-ymca.org or www.shelbycounty5ktour.com. This is the fifth year that the YMCA
5K Walk/Run has been a part of the Shelby County 5K Tour which includes a total of 13 5K races in Shelby County.
All profits from the YMCA 5K Walk/Run benefit the YMCA Community Partners Campaign which provides membership and
program financial assistance to people of Shelby County.
HONDA VOLUNTEERS LOG 200 HOURS
Honda of America Mfg. employees logged 200 hours of volunteer time during three days at the Sidney-Shelby County
YMCA. Honda of America sent employees to the YMCA June 27 and 30 and July 1. The Honda volunteers weeded, landscaped and mulched the YMCA grounds, painted various areas of the facility, specifically the YMCA Welcome Center,
entrance hallway and main hallway to the gyms, as well as deep cleaned all of the wellness equipment.
Associate Executive Director, Sam Casalano remarked, “They did a great job! Everyone was so experienced and friendly.
Members’ comments have been overwhelmingly positive! Their caring and hard work were a special gift to all of us and
will have a lasting impact for years to come.”

The Y Child Development Center is currently accepting registrations for the 2011-2012 Half Day Preschool program. The

olds and young four years olds a Tuesday/Thursday class is offered. For older four and five year olds a Monday/Wednesday/Friday class is available. Both classes meet from 9:00 am to 11:30 am on class days.

JIM LANTZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
Katie Borchers was awarded the 2011 Jim Lantz Memorial Scholarship during
ceremonies at the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA on June 23, 2011. A reception was
hosted by the YMCA for the scholarship winner and her family and friends, as well
as all current YMCA Board of Trustees and Foundation Board of Trustees members.
Katie graduated from Russia High School, and is attending the Ohio State University, where she will pursue a doctorate in physical therapy. The scholarship is a
one-time $1,000 award.
The Scholarship Selection Committee found Katie to be a responsible and dedicated young woman who is committed to
achieving her goals. They felt she exemplified the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility which are emphasized in the YMCA Character Development program, and that she reminded them of the late Jim Lantz in her leadership
skills and work ethic, and would represent Jim’s memory well.
The scholarship was established in 2011 in memory of Jim Lantz, who lost his life in a car accident in high school. Jim’s
family established the scholarship with the hope of preserving Jim’s memory and being able to positively impact the lives
of youth in our community.
Katie has been a part of the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA for the past 15 years, and was a member of the gymnastics
and acrobatics teams. She participated in a variety of sports at Russia High School, including cross country, basketball,
cheerleading, band, and track & field, where she won the state championship in 2011 for the 800 meter run. She also
volunteered at Wilson Memorial Hospital and with her church’s youth group, while maintaining a 3.8 GPA.
“We congratulate Katie on her selection as the first ever recipient of the Jim Lantz Memorial Scholarship,” said Ed
Thomas, Executive Director of the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA. “We are sincerely grateful to Jim’s family for partnering
with the YMCA in endowing this scholarship which has the potential to touch the lives of so many young people in the
Sidney-Shelby County community.”
NATIONAL ACROBATICS
GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONS
The Sidney-Shelby YMCA Acrobatics Gymnastics competitors Cassie Dulworth and Lexi Quinlisk brought home the Silver
medal at the 2011 USA Acrobatics Gymnastics Championships held in San Jose, CA July, 21-27. This week long event
brought together Acrobatics participants from all over the Continental U.S. The elite/world participants shared a dance/
stunt show after their performances. The Sidney-Shelby County YMCA is the only YMCA in the country that is involved in
this sport; with more than 50 clubs and over 800 athletes, our YMCA Acrobatics participants captured the Silver medals.
Congratulations girls!
MONARCH LEGACY FUND GRANT
The Monarch Legacy Fund of the Community Foundation of Shelby County recently awarded the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA a grant to send five of our Leaders Club members to Leaders School at Mount Vernon College. The grant also
provided funding for renovations to the Y’s teen center, including painting, two
bean bag chairs and a Nintendo Wii gaming system.
“We are extremely grateful for all that the Monarch Legacy Fund of the Community Foundation of Shelby County has done to help our YMCA better serve the
families of our community and we look forward to continuing and strengthening
our relationship,” remarked YMCA Executive Director, Ed Thomas.
