JIM LANTZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER Katie Borchers was awarded the 2011 Jim Lantz Memorial Scholarship during ceremonies at the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA on June 23, 2011. A reception was hosted by the YMCA for the scholarship winner and her family and friends, as well as all current YMCA Board of Trustees and Foundation Board of Trustees members. Katie graduated from Russia High School, and is attending the Ohio State University, where she will pursue a doctorate in physical therapy. The scholarship is a one-time $1,000 award. The Scholarship Selection Committee found Katie to be a responsible and dedicated young woman who is committed to achieving her goals. They felt she exemplified the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility which are emphasized in the YMCA Character Development program, and that she reminded them of the late Jim Lantz in her leadership skills and work ethic, and would represent Jim’s memory well. The scholarship was established in 2011 in memory of Jim Lantz, who lost his life in a car accident in high school. Jim’s family established the scholarship with the hope of preserving Jim’s memory and being able to positively impact the lives of youth in our community. Katie has been a part of the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA for the past 15 years, and was a member of the gymnastics and acrobatics teams. She participated in a variety of sports at Russia High School, including cross country, basketball, cheerleading, band, and track & field, where she won the state championship in 2011 for the 800 meter run. She also volunteered at Wilson Memorial Hospital and with her church’s youth group, while maintaining a 3.8 GPA. “We congratulate Katie on her selection as the first ever recipient of the Jim Lantz Memorial Scholarship,” said Ed Thomas, Executive Director of the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA. “We are sincerely grateful to Jim’s family for partnering with the YMCA in endowing this scholarship which has the potential to touch the lives of so many young people in the Sidney-Shelby County community.” NATIONAL ACROBATICS GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONS The Sidney-Shelby YMCA Acrobatics Gymnastics competitors Cassie Dulworth and Lexi Quinlisk brought home the Silver medal at the 2011 USA Acrobatics Gymnastics Championships held in San Jose, CA July, 21-27. This week long event brought together Acrobatics participants from all over the Continental U.S. The elite/world participants shared a dance/ stunt show after their performances. The Sidney-Shelby County YMCA is the only YMCA in the country that is involved in this sport; with more than 50 clubs and over 800 athletes, our YMCA Acrobatics participants captured the Silver medals. Congratulations girls! MONARCH LEGACY FUND GRANT The Monarch Legacy Fund of the Community Foundation of Shelby County recently awarded the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA a grant to send five of our Leaders Club members to Leaders School at Mount Vernon College. The grant also provided funding for renovations to the Y’s teen center, including painting, two bean bag chairs and a Nintendo Wii gaming system. “We are extremely grateful for all that the Monarch Legacy Fund of the Community Foundation of Shelby County has done to help our YMCA better serve the families of our community and we look forward to continuing and strengthening our relationship,” remarked YMCA Executive Director, Ed Thomas.
