Luxury Land Rover
glides like a limo
through any surface
The Land Rover LR3 is a luxury SUV that transports you so
smoothly the LR might as well
stand for limousine ride.
Even though the vast majority of drivers spends the vast
majority of their vehicle time
on roads, don’t forget that this
is an exceptionally capable offroad carrier.
Our test drive model, an LR3
HSE, came with a 4.4-liter, 300
horsepower V-8 engine.
The transmission was a sixspeed, electronically controlled
automatic that allowed the
driver to choose from commandshift, sport and manual
modes.
The tester had permanent
four-wheel drive with traction
control.
Additionally, if you need
more proof that this thing is
ready to go where there’s no
pavement, there is a terrainresponse system that lets the
driver shift among general,
snow, mud, sand and rockcrawl modes.
The LR3 is not only able to
go pretty much anywhere you
might want to take a vehicle,
but it also does so carrying

10 Options for High-Tech
Car Safety Technology
Hear are a few new options available on select car makes
and models that are geared to increase your driving safety.
1. Tire Pressure Monitoring:
An audible alert will sound if your tire pressure becomes too low.

seven passengers, should your
crew be that large.
Our tester was a beautiful silver 2008 model, which carried a
sticker price of $57,950.
But if you’re willing to wait
a little longer, you can hang on
for an updated 2009 model that’s
coming out in the fall.
The revisions aren’t drastic
but include restyled bumpers
in the front and back and larger
wheel arches that are rounder
and body colored.
Also, the grille bumpers and
the handle for the tailgate will
be body colored; currently they
are black.
The changes are meant to add
a touch of sophistication to the
LR3 design.

2. Adaptive cruise control/collision mitigation:
Cruise control can now adjust the throttle and brakes to keep a safe
distance from the car in front of you.
3. Blind-spot detection/side assist/collision warning: An alert will sound
in the car if another car or object is in your blind spot.

4. Lane-departure warning/wake-you-up safety: An alert will sound in
the car if you start to wander out of your lane. The feature also measures
oncoming traffic.
5. Rollover prevention/mitigation: If the rollover system senses a
potential rollover it will apply the brakes and adjust the throttle as needed
to help you regain control.
6. Occupant-sensitive/dual-stage airbags: These airbags sense the size,
weight, seatbelt usage, seating position, and vehicle speed to be sensitive
for airbag deployment for each person riding in the car.
7. Emergency brake assist/collision mitigation:
Recognizes when driver makes a panic stop and applies extra braking
pressure to shorten stopping distance.

According to Resource4Accidents.com,
6,000 teenage drivers die
each year in automobile

fatalities, 23 percent of
the drivers were under the

local CARSTAR thought
the students could use a
reminder as to why driving safety is important,
so they prepared a Ghost
Out/Every 31 Minutes
activity and a docudrama
for the Blue Springs High
School students.
Ghost Out/Every
31 Minutes pulled 31
students involved in
SADD (Students Against
Destructive Decisions)
from their first class and
gave them a Ghost Out
Day t-shirt. The idea was
to convey that every 31
minutes
a person
dies from
an alcoholrelated car
accident.
The junior and senior classes
watched the
docudrama,
which
staged a fatal car accident in front of the high
school. Students and
teachers volunteered to be
“the actors” and local police officers and firefighters were involved.
Four student volunteers
were dressed in prom
attire and situated inside
wrecked cars donated by
CARSTAR. The actors’
roles included a drunk
driver, an innocent bystander, a dead person and
a critically injured person.
The drunk driver helped
show students that more
than 23% of teenagers
killed in car accidents
were under the influence
of alcohol. A 911 call was
placed by the bystander,
and firemen and paramedics showed up to illustrate
how they would deal with
the situation.
When the exercise
ended, the police officers
continued to explain
the seriousness of the
docudrama and presented
safety information that
many young drivers tend
to overlook. Mike Russell, a School Resource
Officer, said the events

“Officer Russell showed
that he really cared about
the students and community
when giving his presentation” said Mike Hobick of
KC Auto CARSTAR. “He
helped them understand
the consequences of drunk
driving on individuals and
families. We were happy to
be part of such an important
program that will hopefully
make a big impact
on the students.”
A seatbelt check
was administered at the end
of school, and

by CARSTAR.
The gift bag contained key

CARSTAR’s involvement in this program is just
one the of many examples
of a larger campaign that
CARSTAR has been involved with called Be Safe
America. Be Safe America
is CARSTAR’s nationwide
community outreach program, (in conjunction with
the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration) that
advocates safety awareness
and issues in and around cars
to their customers.

Ever Wonder Where Cruise
Control Came From?
Cruise control is a system in motor
vehicles used to automatically set the rate
of speed in the engine. The driver of the
vehicle manually chooses the speed they
want to travel and then presses the cruise
control button. The system takes over the
throttle and maintains the set speed. Cruise
control allows the driver to take a break from
pressing on the pedal and can aid in preventing unconscious speeding due to lack of
attention.
Speed control in automobiles was first
used in the 1910s through a centrifugal
governor. Ralph Teetor, a blind mechanical
engineer and inventor, developed the first
cruise control system for automobiles in
1945. His inspiration spawned from his annoyance of the person who was driving him
continually speeding up and then slowing
down.
Cruise control was first offered in the 1958
Chrysler Imperial, New Yorker and Windsor
cars. In 1960, all Cadillac’s came equipped
with the cruise control feature.
