News for the week of January 2nd
Reading and Science: We will be doing the unit, The Snowy Day, when we return in January. The objectives for this unit will be
sequencing, cause and effect, and compound words. The children will also be working on juicy details in their writing. They will have
a graded writing assignment that they will create in class about what would happen if it snowed in Charleston. I will be looking for
the normal components that we have covered all year (correct letter formation, punctuation, capital letters, and beginning, middle,
and end) as well as, details that engage the audience. Our spelling words for this week are: snow, boat, grow, hope, blow, coat
below, low, very, little.
Math: We will start our unit on money. This week we will review coin identification and coin values. Money is typically the most
difficult unit we cover in first grade due to the abstract nature of counting money. I teach the children to count money using the
method, “Hairy Money”. I will send home an explanation of how to help your child at home using this method. This approach takes
the method from an abstract concept and allows it to be concrete for the children. Please be on the lookout for this information
in your child’s folder.

Thank you: Thank you to everyone that came and helped with the Winter Party. The children and I appreciate all the help and
support in the classroom this year.  Thank you so much for sharing your children with me so far this year. I love each and
every one of them and am so lucky for having them all in 1G. My students this year have grown so much and I am so proud of
them. I am so eager to watch them grow the rest of the year.
I hope everyone has a safe, happy holiday. Please check out scenes from last week.
