Fluvial Landform Study Leaving Certificate 2017

Leaving Certificate Geography
Fluvial landform study, 1day
2017 Topic: ‘The impact of geomorphic process/processes and/or human activity on the
development of landform(s) in a fluvial environment.
This session links with Core Unit 3 (Geographical Investigation and Skills) and will cover all
four stages of the geographical investigation. Students will carry out fieldwork to investigate
the impact of the processes of transportation and deposition on the formation of a meander
at one site on the Larganess River, Co. Fermanagh. They will examine how transportation and
deposition differ across the channel at a meander and how these differences affect the
formation of the channel shape and banks. Students will also be provided with our
investigation booklet, designed to guide them through the process of completing their report.

COURSE CONTENT
2017 Topic: ‘An investigation of the impact of the processes of transportation and deposition on the formation of
one fluvial landform.’
This session links with Core Unit 3 (Geographical Investigation and Skills) and will cover all four stages of the
geographical investigation. Students will carry out fieldwork to investigate the impact of the processes of
transportation and deposition on the formation of a meander at one site on the Larganess River, Co. Fermanagh.
They will examine how transportation and deposition differ across the channel at a meander and how these
differences affect the formation of the channel shape and banks. Students will also be provided with our
investigation booklet, designed to guide them through the process of completing their report.
Students will collect data on the following:
1. Measuring channel deposition.
 Width: Using a measuring tape, students will measure the width of the channel.
 Depth: Using a metre stick, students will measure the depth of the water at regular intervals across the
channel systematically.
 Bedload size and location: Students will measure the longest axis of bedload at regular intervals across
the channel using a measuring tape and pebble board.
2. Investigating transportation within the channel.
 Velocity: Students will use a hydroprop flow meter to measure flow velocity at 5 points across the
channel.
 Suspended sediment: A turbidity meter will be used to measure the amount of load carried by the
river in suspension at 3 points across the channel.
 Total Dissolved Solids: A TDS meter will be used to measure the concentration of dissolved solids within
the channel at three points across the channel.
Students will also discuss likely outcomes of their investigation and different methods of data presentation.
Please note:
 On a standard day visit (6 hour course) students will only be able to look at likely outcomes and explanations for
Stage 4 (Results, Conclusions and Evaluation). It is not possible for the students to analyse their own results on
a standard day visit due to time constraints.
 In order for the students to complete graphs and draw conclusions relating to their own results, an extended
course is required (8 hours with no meal, or 9 hours with a meal at our restaurant). This slightly longer stay will
essentially allow students to complete a first draft of their Geographical Investigation.
 This course requires transport to fieldwork sites. Please ensure that your coach will be available during the day
for this.
