Principal’s Corner
Dear PBVM Families,
Christ is Risen, Alleluia! So much has happened since we have seen one another! We have traveled with our
Lord in His Suffering, His Crucifixion, and His Death. We have Risen with Him from the tomb! We are not the
same people we were two weeks ago: all things have been made new in Him! The most radical change are
in six of our own PBVM students and three of our PBVM staff and parents! On Easter Vigil Kaleo, Kailee,
Since 1961
Christian, Melody, Michael, and Jack were Baptized and are a NEW creation into Christ! They died and rose
with Him as they were ‘plunged’ into the waters of Baptism! We are so blessed and amazed to have in our
Notes from the Office midst the fresh Grace of these Baptized souls! It was a blessing to see so many of you at the Triduum Liturgies and at the celebration for our newest members of the Church. Also – we have a NEW month! May is the

P.M.
 Mom’s Mini Retreat

A.M.
There is a lot happening these last weeks of school! Please enjoy every moment! This Saturday, May 7th , all
are invited to witness our 2nd grade class make their 1st Holy Communion! Talk about grace! Then the next
day, on May 8th, (Mother’s Day!) we look forward to seeing you all at the PVBM School Mass at 10:30 A.M.
We will host the May Crowning, and our students and families will lead the Presentation Parish in worship.
Please bring all Moms and Grandmas! The children can wear their “Easter Best” (preferred) for this special
occasion or their school uniforms. It will be a special Mass to honor our 1st Communicants, Mother Mary, and
all mothers!
Speaking of mothers….. I would like to host all of our PBVM mothers (and grandmothers) for a Mom’s Morning of Reflection on May 13th from 8 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. I chose this day because it is both the Feast of Our
Lady of Fatima and the Feast of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament (the Community Feast for the Dominican
Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist)– in other words it is a perfect day to celebrate and reflect upon our
motherhood. Father Leatherby and I will provide a morning of prayer, reflection… and of course refreshments and social time! Please join me and the students at the 8 A.M. Mass in the Church. Please RSVP
([email protected]) so I can send you more details regarding the schedule. I would
also like to invite the new moms of next year’s crop. If you are a Guardian Angel, please reach out to your
new family to invite our newest PBVM moms to the morning of reflection.
A great big THANKS to Becky Jennings who continues to inventory and organize our entire library! Several
PBVM parents have been so gracious as to offer to help! Thank you so much – you can help too… we have
work that can be done at the school and work that can be done at home. Please email me to get more details. Also A big Thanks to Mark Z. who transported three HUGE portable bookcases that will be used for our
library relocation needs. Please see volunteering details in the email body and in the newsline.

Parents of Jr. High! I was blessed to teach a VERY brief, VERY simple unit on poetry – sonnets, to be exact. The 6th -8th
graders and I learned a little bit about sonnets, the structure of a sonnet, and iambic pentameter (a very scary set of
words that really are not scary at all!). They are busy memorizing their sonnets (right, students?) and many of them will
recite their sonnets at our first ever PBVM Coffee House Poetry Slam. Please carve out some time on May 24th for this
event. Jr. High parents are invited to join us for morning assembly at 8 A.M., then to gather in the Café at 8:30 A.M. to
enjoy some muffins, coffee, tea… and poetry – all compliments of our Jr. High students!
I would like to host a first-time presentation of “Healthy Family: Safe Children” on Friday, May 20th (Part I) from noon –
3 P.M. and May 27th (Part II) from noon to 3 P.M. This first session will be limited to twenty participants, so RSVP me at
[email protected] if you are interested as soon as possible . Each session will include three video
presentations and a group discussion. I will provide work books for participants. If you cannot make these sessions, I
hope to offer another session during summer school and/or on an evening or weekend. For a table of contents and video
clips from the sessions, peruse the “Secure Child” web site at http://www.securechild.org/toc.htm. I am very excited
about this learning opportunity and believe it will bear much fruit in our homes and school.
Lots more going on… but this is all I can remember on this whirlwind Monday back-to-school!
Be assured of all my love and prayers,
In our Risen Lord and with Mary, Queen of Heaven,
Sister Maximilian Marie, O.P.
Could you spare some time to help inventory books from the school library? This is a project that can be done
"on site" or at home. In the last few
weeks, some moms and Sisters have
managed to inventory 1/3 of the library,
but we still have 2/3 to go, and many
hands would make light work! Please contact Becky
Jennings at [email protected] if you are able to help.
On behalf of the 2011 Ladies Luncheon Committee, we
would like to thank all the ladies who attended and all the
families who donated to our event. Because of your generosity, we made over $3,700 in the Silent Auction and
Raffle. This exceeds last year’s efforts, and we are quite
pleased. However more than the fund raising aspect of
our luncheon, this event is about community and friendship, and we hit the $1 million mark on that. We thank all
of you for your support.
Special thanks go out to our very affordable 8th grade entertainment: Christine Cotterill, Anjelica Jimenez, Taylor
Orosco, Hannah Ruiz, and Bella Spradling, with special
guests Ian Scott, Chris Enabnit (showing off his spelling
AND guitar-playing skills), Matthew Maulino (vocals & ukulele), and Jordan Maulino, PBVM ’09, (also vocals & ukulele). All enjoyed our 8th graders immensely. Thank you
so much.
PRO-LIFE NEWS FLASH: You may have heard about
the non-confrontational, and highly energetic pro-life flash
mob events that have been taking place in Chicago to
counter Planned Parenthood demonstrations, and how
effective they have been. Now the organizers of these
events are coming to Sacramento to lead one of these epic
life mobs here in our own city. The event is tomorrow,
Tuesday, May 3! We need numbers. You will not want to
miss this, as it will be a historic and important moment in
our Pro-life history. We can no longer allow for the culture
of death to claim our youth. Let's rise to this occasion and
cast out into the deep. Let's trust in Jesus that He will use
this event for His honor and glory. Let's bring the culture of
LIFE to the streets, and take the day by storm and tell the
world that we are not losing this battle, as we are assured
that the victory is His. Let us give hope to the state and the
nation. We are asking Participants to meet at 10:00 AM at
L and 11th st. by the capital. Please bring everybody you
can, young and old, as each persons presence will be another glorious ray of that light of Spirit and Truth. Practically, you should know that we will be praying, singing, and
sporting huge yellow LIFE balloons. There will be no angry
or negative shouting. It will be 100% positive and nonconfrontational. This will be awesome and we'll see you
there. Any student who wishes to attend this event, is
excused from class. Check out this link to get an idea of
what this event is like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?

Teacher’s Weekly Update
Preschool - Mrs. Murphy
Welcome back Preschoolers! We have missed all of your joyful faces. Oh my, our caterpillars have grown while we were on
vacation. Most of the caterpillars have now quadrupled in size and are hanging in a 'J.' A couple have even started forming into
a chrysalis! How fun it will be to watch them change in the next couple of weeks. The new month brings us a unit on bugs and
reptiles. We are working on bringing the Reptile Den into our classroom for a special visit. This week in Religion we are talking
about the Resurrected Christ. We are going to Mass on Tuesday. Have a blessed week, Mrs. Murphy, Mrs. Tsui, and Mrs. Lee
Kindergarten - Mrs. Franklin
Welcome back. Christ has risen! Alleluia! I hope you had a lovely and joyful week in celebration of Easter. Please note that I
have scheduled our big field trip to the Sacramento Zoo and Fairy Tale Town for Monday, May 23rd. The fee is $10:00. This is
enough to cover eight to ten chaperones. We will be having lunch in the park after visiting the zoo and before going to Fairy
Tale Town. The children will need to bring a sack lunch and a drink. I would like them to wear their uniforms. It can be crowded,
and wearing their uniforms makes them easily identifiable. The children always have a great time on this field trip, and it is easily applicable to our reading, writing, and science standards. Please return the permission slip with the fee by Friday, May 6th.
We will be starting our final units in both language arts and mathematics. Our tenth unit in language arts is called, “Windy
Days.” This week we will focus on mastering the long vowel sound of Ee. We will be putting together everything we have been
learning all year. In mathematics our unit is called, “Geometry and Measurement.” This week we will be learning about solid
and complex shapes. The three dimensional shapes that we will focus on are spheres, cones, cubes, cylinders, and rectangular
prisms. Our Kindergarten Growing Up Ceremony will be on Friday, June 3rd, at 11 o’clock. Have a great week! God’s Blessings,
Mrs. Franklin
First Grade - Mrs. Kretz
I hope everyone enjoyed the Easter holiday. I enjoyed the rest and relaxation. This week our story will be “Jot and Dabber and
the Acorn Mystery.” The sound spelling of the week is /oo/ as in book. We will have a comprehension and spelling test on Friday. Because of the holiday break homework will be sent home today and should return completed on Friday in the green
folder. In math we will learn about telling time and get ready for the math fact timed test. The math fact timed test consists of
40 addition and subtraction problems. We will also review money. This Friday is a minimum day. School will be dismissed at
12:15 P.M. Also on Friday we will attend Mass at 8:00 A.M. with our 6th grade Mass buddies. Please arrive by 7:55 A.M. to ensure we arrive at Mass on time. Thank you for all your help and support. Have a wonderful week. Mothers: Have a GREAT
Mother's Day!
Second Grade - Sister Maria Rose
He is Risen, Alleluia! Happy Easter to all! Hopefully over break you have been watching the night sky. Each student has one
day the next month that he or she is to observe and draw the moon for our class moon lookout project. Please ask your child
about this day and mark your calendar. Our 21 caterpillars are quickly changing, and some have begun to form their chrysalis.
The class is very excited to chart their own caterpillar’s growth into an adult butterfly. It is a perfect segue into discussing the
Resurrection and new life. We’re back to our normal school Mass being on Fridays at 8 A.M.; please join us! In Religion the
second grade will finish our unit on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Eucharist as we look at Religion chapter 28. There
will be a test on ch. 25-28 Thursday. In preparation for your child’s First Holy Communion, I have designed a retreat day for
them this Wednesday. Please make sure they pack lunches that day and wear free dress that is appropriate for attending Mass
and adoration but also good for outdoor activities that involve running. For Writer’s Workshop we’ll write humorous fiction
narratives. In math we’ll take the chapter 23, place value to 1000, test on Friday and then begin chapter 24 which deals with
regrouping 100’s. For language arts we continue unit five, “Responsibility,” with a humorous fiction selection called “The Signmaker’s Assistant!” The phonics focus for our Friday spelling test is the vowel sound in fall that can be spelled: aw, au, augh, &
al. We’ll make our usual chapel visit for Adoration on Thursday about 12:30. Please keep the preparations for your child’s 1st
Holy Communion in your prayers! Thank you! FYI, I will ask Fr. Leatherby to bless any First Holy Communion rosaries probably
the week after the ceremony…I’ll keep you posted.

He has truly risen, Alleluia! The solemnity of Easter is such a tremendous celebration in the Church that she celebrates
Easter Sunday intensely for eight days (the octave of Easter) and then continues to celebrate for fifty days, culminating in
the Solemnity of Pentecost. This week, the children will recall the great Easter Vigil which is the Mother of all Vigils! We
will discuss the symbolism of darkness and light and how Christ dispelled the darkness of sin and evil through His resurrection! As at the celebration of the Easter Vigil, we will process into the atrium with a paschal candle, and each child will
light his/her individual candle from the Paschal candle, symbolizing our participation in the Grace (light!) of Christ
through our baptism and the other sacraments. As we enter the new liturgical season of Easter, the children will also
have the opportunity to set up the white and gold prayer table with various “Easter” symbols (candles, Easter lilies,
prayer card with “Alleluia!” etc...)
8th Grade Religion
This week the 8th graders will be studying Natural Law and Conscience. We’ll look at how the world around us is made up
of laws—physical laws and moral laws, which both fall under the eternal law of God. The orderliness of the universe necessitates these laws and points to their Divine origin. Natural Law is the basic moral law which God has placed on the
human heart and can be discovered through the light of human reason. Civil laws should be based on the basic precepts
of natural law. What happens when civil laws contravene the precepts of natural law? We’ll discuss examples of this and
our responsibilities as citizens. We’ll also discuss how conscience is the application of principles found in the natural law
and applied to specific moral situations. As Catholics, we have the obligation to form our conscience according to the
moral teachings of the Church. A properly formed conscience will lead one in making sound judgments on the justice of a
particular law.
Art.—Mrs. Whalen
This Friday after Mass, we will honor our students who have been chosen to represent our school for the
art contest sponsored by The Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Three students from the fifth grade and

well as hand/eye co-ordination.

ball, and some basic fundamentals of the swing.
