Law alumna Ms Bonita Chan has been appointed to the Council of the Law Society of Hong Kong. She also serves on the Society’s Member Services and Standards & Development Standing Committees. Social work alumna and writer Ms Annie Chiang received awards at the Hong Kong Golden Book Awards and Secondary Students’ Best Ten Books Election for her book 《給自己一個 like》. Alumni Dr Cédric Maridet (left) and Mr Kenny Wong (right), School of Creative Media, received honours at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards, organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Dr Maridet was named Artist of the Year (Media Arts) and Mr Wong received the Award for Young Artist (Media Arts). The School won the Award for Arts Promotion. 12 City AlumNet 2016 CityU Pride School of Law alumnus Mr Hectar Pun was appointed a Senior Counsel of the HKSAR Government by the Chief Justice. Dr Venus Tang (Doctor of Business Administration) was appointed to the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Hong Kong Committee 2015-16. PhD student Yuan Xingliang (centre), who is working on an anti-phishing mobile app that can detect malicious information inside QR codes, and alumnus Mr Oswis Wong (left), who has developed a way to access smartphone functions and apps more efficiently, received funding from the Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities, set up by the Innovation and Technology Commission. Alumnus Mr Mew Kin-ni (right) joined the Cyberport University Partnership Programme and was awarded HK$100,000 to develop his start-up. The company applies big data technology to help banks and other businesses answer customers’ enquiries. CityU engineering students won the championship at the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Joint Institutes Competition for developing a system that can convert 80% of the thermal energy released by air-conditioners into electric energy. Another team of CityU students received the second runner-up title for developing a device that can turn noise into electric power. Students Cacin Wong (right) and Carman Yeung (left), Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, received the prestigious Drury Medal (for best entry in the under-25 category). Their winning project “Small Bag Big Life” provides a quick way to build comfortable shelters from earthbags to assist natural disaster survivors. A team of 14 CityU students won a gold medal at the International Genetically Engineered Machine Giant Jamboree Competition 2015 in the US for their novel gene-based remedy to tackle lactose intolerance. CityU sports teams achieved impressive results in the annual University Sports Federation of Hong Kong competitions. CityU won the men’s overall championship and was first runnerup in the women’s overall championship. Our athletes also won the overall championship in three events, men’s championship in eight events, and women’s championship in four events. The University Grants Committee selected the “Resonance” project initiated by CityU students from different backgrounds, as the best sector-wide student-initiated project encouraging multicultural integration. A novel gene vector developed by Jin Weihong, a PhD student from the Department of Physics and Materials Science, enhances the efficiency of delivering gene therapy and chemotherapy drugs into cancer cells, bringing new hope for cancer patients.
