On Wednesday, August 17, 2016, the Board of Trustees held a special board meeting that
encompassed a district-wide ethics training for managers. The District’s General Counsel, Jack P.
Lipton, Ph.D., Esq., effectively reviewed district administrative and board policies on conflicts of
interest. Jack Lipton also explained state and federal laws related to public employees and best
practices for ethical behavior in the workplace.
The engaging training encompassed a presentation of several scenarios that called to question, the
ethical nature or legality of each circumstance. The presentation of situations allowed for healthy
dialogue and an active question and answer session amongst attendees.
Many thanks to the Board of Trustees for recommending that we offer this training to all of the
managers. I found the training to be very informative and thorough. The training helped me to realize
that opinions sometimes vary between what is legal and what is ethical—which makes doing the “right”
thing not as easy as it seems.
Considering that point, I would like to convey my appreciation to all of the staff and faculty throughout
the District who work hard to make the right decisions every day, for the benefit of our students and the
community we serve.
As a district, we look forward to offering more of these training opportunities to reinforce our ability to
conduct meaningful work in our district and for our colleges.
