January 12, 2017 - Fellowship Presbyterian Church

January 12, 2017
The most recent issue of Christian Century magazine included a summary of a couple of studies done in
locations with religiously diverse populations. Singapore, Australia and Indonesia have large populations of
Christians, Hindus and Buddhists. I thought the findings were interesting and hope you do too.
Forget stereotypes about Buddhists. Resear cher s expected to find Buddhists low in mater ialism
because of the religion’s emphasis on nonattachment to physical goods, but they found that Buddhists
were significantly more likely than Christians to say they like to own things that impress people and
that they admire people who own expensive homes and cars. Christians, however were more
interested in status symbols than Hindus.
A faith that grows, or a faith for show? Religious people who say faith is an impor tant par t of their
lives, put a priority on prayer, believe God watches over them, and feel a sense of responsibility for
reducing pain and suffering, were less likely than than other followers to be concerned with seeking
social status or impressing people with their possessions. People who try to live out religious values
were more likely to reject unethical consumer behaviors while people who go to worship to socialize
and pray mostly for their own needs were more likely to say it is OK to profit from unethical
consumer activities.
That new Mercedes doesn’t buy happiness. People who said r eligion was an impor tant par t of their
lives were both less likely to exalt consumer goods and more likely to report greater psychological
and emotional well-being. “The more religious people are, the happier they are with their life
compared with their less religious counterparts.”
Getting more versus giving back. People who said religion was an important part of their lives were
more likely to volunteer, give money and raise funds for charity. Among the faiths, Buddhists were
less likely to volunteer etc. than Christians.
How big is that carbon footprint? Religion plays a major r ole in sensitizing follower s to how their
consumer behavior affects the environment. Religious people were more likely to engage in
sustainable acts such as paying more for products that are friendly to the environment and to stop
buying a favorite brand if the company is a source of pollution.
I don’t know that I would call these findings surprising, but I do find them affirming and reassuring. In
the Christian tradition, we understand that faith is a gift from God and we believe in living lives that
demonstrate our gratitude for it. Speaking for myself, I know that that makes for a “happier” life, to
use the researchers terminology. See you Sunday!
Mary
