Brave New World Opening Activity

Brave
New
World
Opening
Activity
In
the
novel,
society
is
divided
into
five
castes.
The
highest
caste
is
allowed
to
develop
naturally
while
it
matures
in
its
"decanting
bottle".
The
lower
castes
are
treated
with
chemicals
to
cause
lower
development
in
intelligence
and/or
physical
growth.
The
castes
are
Alphas,
Betas,
Gammas,
Deltas,
and
Epsilons.
Each
Alpha
or
Beta
is
the
product
of
one
fertilized
egg
developing
into
one
fetus.
Members
of
other
castes
are
not
unique.
They
are
created
using
the
Bokanovsky
Process,
which
enables
a
single
egg
to
spawn
up
to
96
children
and
one
ovary
to
produce
thousands
of
children.
Now,
in
even
groups,
I
want
you
to
create
your
own
five‐caste
system.
Name
your
castes
and
decide,
as
a
group,
the
hierarchy
of
the
castes
in
society.
Decide
how
these
castes
are
created
and
maintained.
Now,
on
your
laptops,
type
a
150‐250‐word
entry.
Pick
a
celebrity
to
represent
each
of
your
created
castes.
Explain
why
you
picked
them
and
explain
the
castes’
roles
in
society.
