Estimating Square Roots

Estimating Square Roots
Scavenger Hunt!!
Includes an Interactive Notes Page
and an Exit Slip
Directions for Use
1. Make enough copies of the recording sheet for
individual students or for partners.
2. Copy one set of scavenger hunt task cards
(laminate if possible).
3. Place the cards in random order around the room.
You can tape them on walls or windows, or just place
them on desks.
4. Two people can start at one card. They should copy
the square root problem in the shaded area of the
recording sheet.
5. When they find the answer, they should seek out
the next card. The answer will be in one of the
squares on the corner of the card.
In order to use the recording sheet, students will need to
practice finding the consecutive integers a square root is
located between. I do several with them first, using the
following graphic organizer:
√80
√25
5
5.4
√36
1. Write the two perfect squares
the problem is between.
6
2. Simplify the perfect squares
3. Because 29 is closer to 25,
the answer would be about 5.4
Things to tell the students:
1. This is not a race. Go at your own pace and do the
best you can!
2. After copying the problem, find a place to sit.
There shouldn’t be a crowd around the cards.
3. Check your work! Copy the numbers accurately.
Round accurately.
4. In this activity, the square roots can be estimated
to the nearest tenth. I told students they could be
within one tenth of the answers on the card.
5. Ask for help, if you’re stuck! This is a great time to
get some one-on-one help!!
