President’s Letter
Dear Members
By the time you receive this, Fasching will be over. I would like to thank the Elferrat, the Prinzengarde, and the Prince and Princess, for, once again, hosting a great
season. It’s always over way too soon, but we look forward to next year.
As much fun as Fasching was, we still have many more fun and exciting events
planned for the rest of the year. In March, we have our St.Patricks Day party on
the 11th. A dinner of Corned-beef and cabbage and music by Street Scene should
make us all feel a little “Irish”. Also in March, we have our Roaring ‘20’s dinner/
dance on the 25th. The ever popular “Hit Squad” will be back to play for us. Be
sure and check this news magazine for details. You don’t want to miss them.
It takes work to make these “fun” events happen: from booking the bands, to decorating, to manning the door, to selling the dinner tickets, to preparing and serving
the meals. Madie Mirabal is in charge of decorating, but could use some helping
hands. Kathe Mirabal is in charge of the door, but she, also, could use some help.
Norita Callahan has been handling the dinner ticket sales, but could use some back
up in case she can’t be there. Last, but not least, we are always looking for volunteers to prepare a meal. If you can help with any of the above, let me know and I
will put you in touch with the proper person.
On a somber note, I would like to send out condolences to my vice president,
Mark Meadows and his family at the loss of his mother Eunice Foley. Eunice was
a long time member of the German American Club, and could often be seen enjoying a drink with friends and family at the bar and at Jazz. Though small, Eunice
had a big personality. She will be missed.
I think that is all for now. So until next month, take care and I’ll see you at the
club.
Miguel Mata

NOTICES
RIP Maria (Mia) Buers
1927-2016
The smell of peppermint, an infectious smile and a kind heart are just a few of the
many things we will miss. Maria (Mia) Buers passed away recently. She and her husband
Hans were one of the original couples that helped found our club. She joined her husband,
daughter Jacqueline Fox, grandson Karl Fox along with many other family members that
passed before her on the morning of August 21st. The weeks before her passing she spoke
of many fond memories she had of her life. Most were of times with her family and the
good times she had here at the club with her friends. Her daughter Jacqueline Buers and
Dieter Fox met here at the club. “Who would have thought they would meet the love of
their lives here?” she would say! She was always so proud of how involved her family was
in their German traditions as well as helping here at the club. One of the last times she was
able to participate at the club was for a past anniversary where she, Hans, Jacqueline, Dieter, her granddaughter Monika and her great grandchildren Alison and Jordan were able
to pose for a 4 generation picture. She will be deeply missed. Mia was 91 years old when
she passed away.
—Monika Fox
We want to thank everyone who came to celebrate the life of our mother Eunice Foley.

Hungarian Event
On March 12, 2017 at 1pm, we will remember the Hungarian revolution of 1848 against
the Hapsburg rule, with home cooked stuffed cabbage, the Hungarian Dancers, some discussions, elections and raffle. All are welcome.
Steve Borbas
Changes to be implemented
At the last board meeting, the board implemented some changes to drink prices and membership dues, and will test a few alternatives to live bands, as we continue to determine
ways to increase revenues and reduce costs.

ESSEN UND SPRECHEN:
Attire: Semi formal or costume
This month we will gather at 6:30pm on the second Wednesday, March 8th for our monthly Essen und Sprechen
Treffen (gathering) at the Grain Station, 2004 Central Ave SE, Albuquerque, NM 87109 (on the south side of Central
Ave, between Yale and University Blvds). The owner said she will reserve some parking spots for us. Come join
together at the monthly Essen und Sprechen to practice your German and socialize over dinner in German (with some
English). We decide at each month’s dinner where to go the following month.
Please, PLEASE, reply by the prior Sunday, March 5th, to Jay by email to [email protected] or
call at 505-362-1733 to let us know whether you will be there, so we will know how large of a table to reserve. The
Essen und Sprechen dinner is quite popular—attendance usually ranges 10-16 people, with our all-time high having
been 28 in attendance. In February we had 10 in attendance.
(The Essen und Sprechen monthly dinner group is not affiliated with the GAC; rather it is a separate, autonomous group. This notice is provided for the convenience of anyone may wish to attend).
