As we convene for our silver anniversary
cabaret convention we’re reminded of how fearless Donald Smith
was to initiate this extraordinary tradition in 1989. Even by naming
it a Cabaret Convention he signaled in two words the coming
together of like-minded people, diverse in so many ways, yet
connected by their shared love of lyrics, music and intimacy.
Our opening night, “I Love A Piano” will
be hosted by master violinist Aaron Weinstein.
When I called him and said “I have a crazy
idea! I want you to host our evening called I
Love A Piano.” Aaron responded, “Well I love
a piano.” Among our singing pianists are
some of Donald’s favorites like Steve Ross and
Barbara Carroll as well as new discoveries like
Eric Yves Garcia and Liam Forde (winner of
this year’s Julie Wilson Award).
Tuesday, October 21st – Julie Wilson’s 90th
Birthday – will be celebrated with friends old
and new including some cabaret stars from
Broadway like Christine Andreas, T. Oliver
Reid, Amra-Faye Wright & Carol Woods. Receiving The Mabel, our prestigious award for
lifetime achievement, will be the extraordinary
Ann Hampton Callaway.
Wednesday, October 22nd features a salute
to the music of Burton Lane and the lyrics
of Yip Harburg. Andrea Marcovicci and
Jeff Harnar have again assembled a stellar
cast which includes Linda Lavin, Christine
Ebersole, Brent Barrett, Sally Mayes, Leslie Uggams, Tom
Wopat, Karen Akers, and Jennifer Sheehan who is receiving
this year’s Donald F. Smith Award.
Thursday, October 23rd our closing night, hosted by Klea
Blackhurst, is entitled Come On And Hear and devoted to the
timeless classics of Irving Berlin. Crossover artists like Karen
Mason, Mandy Gonzalez, Terry Burrell and Anita Gillette will be
joined by cabaret favorites Nicolas King, Sidney Myer and new
discoveries like Rebekah Lowin and Peggy Eason.
As Frank Sinatra often said, “Everything I learned, I owe to
Mabel Mercer.” Well, Donald taught us a lot too, and at our 25th
annual Cabaret Convention, for his inspired concept, we thank
him profoundly.
