What is your message?
Suggestions to enhance your week:
- Take pictures all week and create a slideshow that will play before and after your presentation.
- Alternatively, print pictures (black and white is fine) and hang them throughout the week.
- Printed program. Nothing fancy, a program with the participant’s names and their message will work.
- Have a Master of Ceremonies. This gives a professional “feel” to their presentations.
- Provide punch and cookies after the presentations

Play with ACTion! Hear Us Roar!
Learn to express your message
through a play, speech, dance, or presentation!
Write, direct, rehearse, and perform your message.
Open to all ages! No experience necessary!
Does this seem daunting to you? As an adult, it certainly seems so. We fear making
mistakes or embarrassing ourselves. Youth and teens are ready to take their message and
express it positively when given guidance.
You will lead them to ACT and let them ROAR! with their message! They will develop
their message in 3 to 5 one hour sessions before presenting. Final presentation is
immediately after the last day’s class.
What ACTion isn’t:
- Formal play or speech that is memorized
- Fancy costumes or complicated sets
What ACTion is:
- A short, specific message with minimal preparation and rehearsal.
Basic Guidelines: K.I.S.S. (Keep It Short and Specific.)
- Plan to meet for 3 -5 consecutive days for one hour each day.
- Provide guidance. Let them take the lead on their message or idea.
- They can work alone or in small groups of 3 – 5.
- Simple posters or simple items for demonstration may be created.
- Final presentation should be under 5 minutes.
Supplies:
-
Several sheets of paper on clipboards, and pencils for each participant.
A room large enough that the participants can work without disturbing others.
Chairs and tables are nice but not necessary. They get their ideas down faster if
they are sitting on the floor.
Poster board, broad tip markers, etc. to make posters.
Whiteboard or poster board for the leader to write messages on for review with the
group.

Five Day Plan
Day One: Do warm-up exercises that encourage participation. Explain what a message is
and how to make it specific. Share message ideas with the group. Break into groups with
similar messages and pair with a partner or decide to work on your own. End with 5
minutes of review of messages and gathering in a circle to share what everyone has
observed and answer questions.
Day Two: Do warm-up exercises that encourage participation. Review messages in a
group circle. Suggest more defined messages if necessary. Explain message formats
(helpful to have these posted on the wall or board.) Select message format (play, dance,
poem, etc.) Staff provides guidance to each group to keep it manageable. Begin working.
-
Present options for their presentations.
o Poster depicting the issue. Series of posters with each one sharing a piece of
the message. Each participant shares one or more of the posters.
o Write a story or poem with each person sharing their part
o Act out a play with each person playing a different role.
o One partner can read a poem/story while the other acts or dances the role in
the story/poem.
o An individual can write a story or poem and present it preferably without
notes.
o Play or sing if they have a musical talent or can perform a dance.
End by gathering in a circle to share what you have observed and answer questions.
Day Three: Review each group’s message in a group circle. They should be able to state
their message in under 10 words. Each should explain how they are going to share their
message. Post on the wall to keep focus. Break into small groups. Provide guidance and
feedback to each group. End by gathering in a circle to share what everyone has observed
and answer questions.
Day Four: Review each group’s message in a group circle. Each group should state their
message and how they are sharing it. Groups should be able to start performing for staff
and be finishing posters or art work. Provide guidance and feedback to each group. End
by gathering in a circle to share what everyone has observed and answer questions.
Day Five: Gather in a circle. Today is final day of rehearsal and preparation. Each group
should be able to perform for a staff person or the group.
Presentation: Best scheduled for immediately after Day 5’s rehearsal. Immediately at
the end of class, groups will present their message to the rest of the group, parents and
invited guests.
Sit back and enjoy the performance!!
