It is the most wonderful time of the year at
Trinity Middle School! Our students raised
more than $15,000 to give families within our
district a happier and more bountiful holiday.
On December 8, 2016, all of our hard work
came to fruition as we took the 7th and 8th
grade student council members on a shopping
spree to help families in need. After shopping,
the students sorted and wrapped gifts. Over
the course of the next several weeks, we will
be organizing a delivery to each family that
was accepted into the program and will
provide them with gifts and a stocking for
each child, a complete holiday meal, and a
holiday breakfast. It is absolutely amazing
what a dedicated community, staff, and
student population can achieve while working
together.
The committee includes teachers Mrs.
LaBella, Mr. Migyanko, Mr. Daloia, Mrs.
Cortese, Mrs. Kovacicek, Mrs. Pisula, Mrs.
Muschick, and Mrs. Benz.
Happy Holidays from The Hiller
Holiday Helpers!

TUBACHRISTMAS
On Friday, November 18th, Mr. Komula and Mrs. Lind took eight
students to learn alongside 50 other young men at the Mucho
Macho Music festival sponsored by the American Choral Directors
Association (ACDA) of Pennsylvania. The boys who participated
were Corbin Allen, Drew Cain, Dale Glotfelty, Luke Higgins, Ethan
Iams, Colby Nutter, William Sutherland, and Justin Tonsetic. The
host school was East Allegheny High School, and the guest
conductor was Dr. Brian Winnie, director of Choral Activities and
Voice at Southwestern College.
On Saturday, December 3, the Pittsburgh edition
of TubaChristmas was held at the Washington
Crown Center. Approximately 60 Tuba,
Sousaphone, Euphonium and Baritone players
from 3 states participated in this year’s concert.
Trinity Middle School student, Ethan Turturice as
well as T.M.S band director Gordon Lowry
represented Trinity at this year’s event. Pictured
are Ethan Turturice and this year’s guest
conductor, Jack Anderson. Mr. Anderson is the
retired band director for the University of
Pittsburgh Marching Band. Rehearsal was held at
Trinity Middle School.
The boys had to learn three songs, largely independently, over
the course of about six weeks. The songs they learned and
performed were Jonah, Loch Lomond, and Kuimba! Kuimba! is in
Swahili, and the translation is, “Come, let us sing and let music be
our guide. Sing with a joyful heart. Sing of peace, sing of love.”
The students learned new singing techniques, explored different
cultures and languages through the music they sang, and enjoyed
a day of exploration and music-making.
TMS hosted the annual Middle School Quiz
Bowl competition on November 3, 2016.
Over 100 gifted students made up a total of
16 teams for the competition this year.
Gifted students from Canon-Mac, Fort
Cherry, Avella, McGuffey, Burgettstown,
Chartiers-Houston, and Washington
attended. Teams of students answered trivia
questions in a bracket-style competition.
Two Trinity teams made it to the semifinal
round and Trinity #5 narrowly won the
competition by beating McGuffey with a
score of 27 to 35. Congratulations to Riley,
Emma, Ray, Emily, Mikey, and Ben on a job
well done!

Congratulations also to Nathan Hilzendger, Senior Hockey Player who
was named the Pittsburgh Penguins PIHL Player of the Month for
November.
Several 5th and 6th grade gifted students competed in the
Calcu-Solve math competition at Duquesne University on
November 15th. The students worked independently and
in teams to complete math word problems.

TRINITY
Trinity South students in Mrs. McGarrity and Mrs. Parks’
classes were given a debit card loaded with $50 as
payment in advance ($25 from each teacher) for
completed homework. NO! It wasn’t real, but the idea of
debiting and crediting money was! Students received
additional credits for being good citizens in school,
participating in class, and going above and beyond what is
expected. On the other hand, student accounts were
debited when poor choices were made including
incomplete homework. At the end of the month students
“in the black,” or with a positive balance participated in
Debit Games. Some of our top debit earners had as much
as $78 dollars on their debit cards. The games were very
competitive with Mrs. McGarrity’s homeroom nudging out
Mrs. Parks’s class for the title. All in all, everybody was a
winner.
Have you seen
this turkey?
This bird has
been accused
of crimes from
all across the
country. He has
stolen all the
deviled eggs,
grandmother's
famous
noodles, the
Thanksgiving dinner from the White House in Washington,
D.C., and quarters from a bank to buy corn flavored bubble
gum. These are just a few of the crimes that Mrs. Willard's
classroom described on their turkey wanted posters. If you
see this bird, please call the students at Trinity South! We
want him caught as soon as possible! Thank you!
Students at Trinity South participated in the Energized
Guyz assembly which is an in-school assembly designed
to engage elementary school students in green living and
saving energy.
The 1st graders at Trinity South decided to honor and
celebrate Mr. Keruskin on Veteran’s Day. Each
student wrote a thank-you letter to him thanking him
for his service and dedication to our country. The
letters were then put together into classroom books
and presented to Mr. Keruskin. Later in the
afternoon, Mr. Keruskin hosted a question and
answer session with the entire first grade. He
answered all their questions about soldiers, tanks, the
desert, military food, training, and so much more!

The kindergarten classes at Trinity South celebrated
Thanksgiving on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, with
stories, songs, a play, and special snack. Our fifth
grade friends joined in the celebration as our
audience members during the play and as our
dependable reading buddies in the classroom. We
are thankful for our friends! Happy Thanksgiving!
Students were busy during the month of November in Miss
Wichterman’s class writing about what they are thankful for this year.
First, students defined what it means to be thankful using their own
words and then a dictionary. Next, they made a list of people and
objects they are thankful for during the holiday season. Then, the
students wrote what they are thankful for on paper leaves and colored
them.
Second, students picked one person or object they are thankful for
and wrote about it in a paragraph. They began their writing by stating
who or what they are thankful for. Then, three reasons why they are
thankful for this person or object had to be included in their writing.
Finally, one concluding sentence finished their writing piece. After editing their writings, students wrote their
final copy on a turkey paper to share with others for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Mrs. Willard’s students collected items from all of
Trinity South Elementary to stuff into stocking for
Stockings for Soldiers. Last year, the students were
able to collect enough items to stuff 50 stockings. This
year, the students were able to stuff 155 stockings!!!!
Ms. Roney’s classroom came to Trinity South to help
sort and stuff the stockings.
Mrs. Shaulis worked with students at Trinity South to
make cards for Stockings for Soldiers. Each
personalized card was placed into a stocking along
with other items to be sent over seas.

Trinity East “Stuff a School” Toys for Tots Drive
The students at Trinity East completed their 4th annual “Stuff a School” Toys for Tots drive. The toy drive,
spearheaded by “Nurse Bill” has collected 2,377 over the past three holiday seasons.
Colby Jeffrey, a third grade student here at Trinity East, asked his mom two years ago if he could have his own toy
drive and donate the toys he collected to Trinity East’s toy drive. Through the efforts of Colby, his Mom, Dad and
countless volunteers, he has been able to donate more than 1,400 toys to the Trinity East Toys for Tots campaign the
past two years. This year Colby held his annual 3rd annual “Colby’s Toys for Tots Box Truck Drive” on December 4th
at Toys “R” Us in Washington. Colby’s toy drive was a huge success; he collected 871 toys.
Through Colby’s efforts along with the efforts of all the Trinity
East students we are proud to announce we will be donating
1,038 toys to the Washington County Toys for Tots drive.
GREAT JOB TRINITY EAST!!
Trinity Area extends appreciation to
Tractor Supply for a $500
'Dig-It' School Garden Grant….
The money will be used to
plant a garden at
Trinity South Elementary School.

The students from Trinity North Elementary held a
contest to raise money for the 2000 Turkey
Campaign. This campaign raised money for the
needy families in Washington County to have
traditional turkey dinners during the holiday. The school raised $550 with second grade raising the most donations
overall. Fourth grade raised the most amount for the intermediate grades.
A big thank you goes out to all the students who contributed to this worthy cause.
Sheriff Romano, his Chief and/or his
Deputies began their monthly lunch visits
with the students at Trinity North. Deputy
Kristie Saltzman and Deputy K-9 Obie were
visitors last month. K- 9 Obie is a black
Labrador retriever; his job is to find missing
people and search for bombs and narcotics
for Washington County and the surrounding
counties of Greene, Fayette, and
Westmoreland. Deputy Obie is the only Kdog on duty in these nearby areas;
therefore, he is an important deputy!
Deputy Kristie takes care of Obie and is his handler. The
students enjoyed meeting the deputies and having Sheriff
Romano visit them at lunch.
After carefully practicing their parts, our
fantastic (and slightly nervous) narrators,
Pilgrims, Native Americans, turkeys and corn
were ready to perform for their families. North’s
awesome first graders stepped up to the
challenge – and for many, it was their first time
performing in a play! Bravo!!
Hiller Highlights is the newsletter of Trinity Area School District - Home of the Hillers!
After much inquiry, our little scientists in first grade at North
got to work to make a substance they would soon find tastes
great on crackers…butter! The students worked in teams
during this special Sci-Fri, and then they completed a Collins
writing assignment to reflect on their successful experiment!
Trinity North’s 3rd grade classes invited parents in to
complete their science performance task. The
students were given a mixture of 2 unknown
chemicals and had to perform different tests on
them to gain evidence. The evidence was then
used to support their conclusions of what 2
chemicals were in the container. We have a lot of
great scientists on our hands!
Lately, there have been some new faces seen in
the halls of Trinity North. Students in 3rd grade
have been evaluating characters using different
works of literature. The final project required the
students to complete a character analysis on a
character from their favorite stories. The project
included a pumpkin of their character, blueprint of
the pumpkin, and a Type III writing piece written as
an essay.
The first graders from Mrs. Quinn’s class met with the
residents from The Washington Health Center during the
Read with Friends Program. The residents come once a
month to Trinity North to listen to the first grade students read
stories, discuss books, and just talk. (Residents from
Strabane Woods Assisted Living also participate in this
program). The students enjoy meeting and reading to the
elderly, and the residents enjoy being back in school while
listening to young students read. It’s a win – win situation for
both the young and not so young that works so well. The
students and residents had a small Christmas celebration
before they left the school.
Our excited first graders at North were proud to build their creations from marshmallows and
tooth picks! These future engineers built free-standing structures, and many were on display in
the main hallway at Trinity North. The support of families was truly appreciated!!

The students at West welcomed SQUONK, a Pittsburghbased performing group that has been creating shows and
taking them around the globe for more than 20 years. The
STEM workshop taught the students about the history,
engineering and joy of bikes and was accompanied by
music to convey the excitement of wheels in motion.
The Washington-Greene County Blind Association presented an Eye
Safety program to the 4th grade students at Trinity West. Emphasis was
placed on protecting eyes from sparklers, fireworks and other items when
taking part in sporting events. A spokesperson talked to the students
about being visually impaired all of his life and he is now legally blind. The
children were learning just how valuable their eyesight is to them.
Trinity West
honored our
servicemen by
creating dog
tags of family
members or
friends who have
served in the
military. They
are displayed on doors in the entrance way of
the school. The students also donated candy
from their Halloween stash to send to
theTroops. West wants our servicemen to know
that we appreciate all that they do to keep our
country safe and free. The candy weighed in at
164.6 lbs!
As a fundraiser for Trinity West PTA, a family night was held
at the Dairy Queen on Wylie Avenue. And as a special treat,
some teachers and staff served ice cream from behind the
counter!
Hiller Highlights is the newsletter of Trinity Area School District - Home of the Hillers!
Mrs. Koleck showcased her music
classes for parents in Meet Me in
Music. Parents were given the
opportunity to take part and
experience a music class with their
child. Trinity West had great
participation with numerous parents
attending for this event.
Levi West, Trinity West
student, was surprised on
Veterans Day by his uncle
Technical Sergeant John
Michael Makripodis.
Makripodis has served in
the United States Air
Force for the last 10 years.
He's the Kennel Master at
Seymour Johnson Air
Force Base, North
Carolina, and works with
Military Working Dogs
(MWD), and oversees all
MWD operations. They
work directly with the
FBI, CIA, DEA, U.S.
Marshals, and ATF and
the United States Secret Secret Service with the protection
of the President. Sgt. Dean Urbanic of the North Franklin Police
Department visited Trinity West to personally
thank students for their acts of kindness. Students
in grades 3, 4 & 5 wrote letters and made cards to
thank the police officers of North Franklin for
keeping our town safe and for their service each and
every day of the year.
The Kindergarten students at Trinity West participated in a
week long Thanksgiving themed STEM challenge. The
children rotated between four centers. They were
challenged to construct a dinner table made out of
dominoes that could hold a Thanksgiving turkey and all
the fixings, engineer a model Mayflower that could float,
design and create a turkey
hideout, and experiment
with water distribution
through leaves.

As an introduction to the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder, Ms. Denman and Mrs. Willis took some of their
English 10 students on a tour of our town of Washington. Students were able to tour the Washington County
Courthouse, Bradford House and LeMoyne House to learn about the rich history in our backyard.
During the month of November, students in Ms. Shaw’s
sophomore and senior English classes, high school
staff and faculty, and Ms. Shaw’s fourth grade
classrooms at Trinity East worked together to make
the wishes of 30 local children come true this holiday
season as part of the Salvation Army’s Treasures for
Children gift tag program. Through monetary and
gift donations, they are continuing over a decadelong tradition to support our community. We thank
all who participated for their generosity in

OKK (Our Kids Kloset) is now open.
WHAT ARE WE: Our Kids Kloset collects and distributes gently used children's clothing to
Washington County children.
WHERE ARE WE: We are located at 510 E Maiden Street, Washington, PA 15301. Although that is
our address, it is not located right on Maiden St. We are operating from a large two car garage with
brown doors in the alley that runs parallel with Maiden. To get there, turn onto Elm St right next to the
East Maiden Animal Clinic. At the first alley, turn left. Garage will be on the left side of the alley.
OPEN HOUSE EVERY MONDAY: We will be operating our "Open House" every Monday from 5 PM
to 7 PM. Please bring your own shopping bags/plastic bags when attending. There are no bathroom
facilities. If school is closed on Monday, open house will be cancelled.
WHAT WE NEED: Gently used clothing, infant to young adult size clothing. We are particularly in
need of coats, new socks and new underwear. If your church, club, employer, or civic group is looking
for an easy project, please consider doing a clothing drive for us.
