ANNUAL REPORT
2011-2012
Dear Supporters,
Thank you for helping Georgia’s most vulnerable citizens – our children! In fiscal year 2012 (July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012), over
1,960 CASA volunteers served over 8,800 abused and neglected children in Georgia. Today, 140 counties have CASA services and
47 of the 49 judicial circuits are served by a CASA program. CASA is central to fulfilling society’s most fundamental obligation
by making sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and
respect and to learn and grow in the safe embrace of a loving family. You have helped to lift up a child’s voice…a child’s life!
Our ultimate commitment is to develop and support our affiliate programs. We strive every day to maintain a network of
well-administered affiliate programs that operate independently, with mutual accountability. Our core strategic goals
include enhancing the quality of CASA advocacy in Georgia, enhancing our affiliate programs’ ability to perform
the CASA mission and enhancing Georgia CASA’s ability to perform its mission. As you read through the annual
report, you’ll find that the events, activities and initiatives we undertook during fiscal year 2012 were based on helping
our affiliate programs to provide the highest quality of advocacy for Georgia’s deprived children. We are pleased to
report that our audit indicated that 92% of Georgia CASA’s expenses were for services to our affiliate programs.
Please remember that you can continue to help in several ways: consider becoming a CASA volunteer; assist with fundraisers,
trainings and/or special events; use your skills as a board or advisory board member; or give a charitable donation. Thank you
for your ongoing support!
Sincerely,
Marie B. Hannon

GEORGIA CASA
The CASA organization is central to fulfilling society’s most fundamental obligation by making sure a
qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and
respect and to learn and grow in the safe embrace of a loving family. CASA volunteers are deeply committed,
specially trained to advocate for each child’s best interest and how to get those interests met by the system;
they fight against all odds, power and bureaucracy; fight until each child can understand and advocate for his
unalienable rights; and fight so children can live a life of destiny, rather than fate.
Our Vision
Each abused or neglected child involved in juvenile court proceedings
shall have a safe and permanent home.
Our Mission
Georgia CASA develops and supports court-sanctioned, community-based affiliate programs that provide
trained and supervised volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children
involved in juvenile court deprivation proceedings.
Our Purpose
Georgia CASA is committed to maintaining a network of well-administered, affiliate programs that operate
independently with mutual accountability, resulting in the highest level of advocacy for all of Georgia’s
deprived children.
2011 CASA Volunteer of the Year
Pamela Berger, the 2011 CASA Volunteer of the
Year in Georgia, has been a strong, persistent CASA
advocate with Rockdale CASA in Conyers for 11 years
and has advocated for over 38 children. She prepares
comprehensive CASA reports to the judge detailing
her independent assessment of each case. She has also
proven her ability to research and expose concerns about
the children she serves that are not always immediately
apparent to the local Department of Family and Children
Services (DFCS).
Additionally, Pamela helps recruit and train new CASA
volunteers and promotes the CASA program in the
community.
Congratulations, Pamela!
Lynn Wetzel (Rockdale CASA Executive Director), Pamela Berger
(2011 CASA Volunteer of the Year), Judge William Schneider (Juvenile
Court of Rockdale County) and Duaine Hathaway (Georgia CASA
Executive Director)
CASA VOLUNTEERS...
FOR THE CHILDREN
Every day in our state, over 1,960 CASA volunteers advocate for abused and neglected children, helping them to find safe,
permanent homes where they can thrive. Last year, over 8,800 children were served by CASA volunteers in Georgia. CASA
volunteers truly are ‘for the children.’
I am for the child...
who was taken away for her own protection and is
now in foster care.
who must fend for himself and his little
sister...alone.
who is afraid to go home.
who thinks it is her fault.
who was taken away for her own protection
and is now in foster care.
who has never been to a doctor or dentist.
who has attended four schools in two years.
who will one day turn 18 and be surrendered to the world.
Thank you to all CASA volunteers for the work you do each day on behalf of our children! Here is one example of the outstanding
advocacy provided by Pamela Berger, the 2011 CASA Volunteer of the Year:
Two siblings, “Chase” and “Michael,” had CASA volunteer Pamela appointed to them when they first came into
foster care. The siblings were adopted, but a short time later, the adoptive parents decided they did not want to keep
the children. Chase and Michael entered foster care again. Once Pamela found out the children were back in the
system, she asked to be assigned as their CASA volunteer oncd more, even though they were in a county not currently
served by a CASA program. Pamela was able to serve as their CASA volunteer again, and she remained dedicated
to them and regularly traveled to advocate for them. Her efforts resulted in the siblings being placed together in
a loving, permanent home. After six years, Chase and Michael know without a doubt that their CASA volunteer
Pamela will always be there for them.
CASA is central to fulfilling society’s most fundamental obligation by making
sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to
be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect and to learn and grow in the safe
embrace of a loving family. You can lift up a child’s voice. A child’s life.

through continual program improvements. The program has
retained at least 75% of its CASA volunteers annually, and in 2011,
