concern,
I was born and raised in Lakeland but when people would ask me, I use to
tell them I was
from Lake Wales-
a town not much smaller than DeLand that my
parents and I moved to after my dad retired from Publix. I then moved to Gainesville
to attend the University of Florida and the big college town was a bit of a culture
shock that I didn't want to be a part of. So I transferred to Stetson.
Immediately after moving to DeLand, I fell in love with its small town
atmosphere.
It felt like home
again.
Even
with
its
quaint" small- town" tendencies,
DeLand is riddled with diversity, from Stetson University, the waterways of the
St. johns River, amazing food and shopping downtown, the ever growing
agricultural, aviation, and medical industries, to even" The Skydiving Capitol of the
World"- DeLand is a very unique place to live and work.
My grandfather, Mark C. Hollis, instilled a certain kind of culture in our
family. A culture of civic duty, both economically and philanthropically, he was the
epitome of servant leadership and sacrifice for the city of Lakeland. DeLand is a
wonderful town with what seems to be a never-ending amount of opportunities.
When
people ask me where
I' m from today, I tell them DeLand. DeLand has become
my home and I would love nothing more to serve this town as my grandfather did
the
its
city
of
Lakeland. I don't just want to watch DeLand grow; I want to be a part of
growth.
This is why I desire to serve as a helpful addition on the Economic
Development Committee for the City of DeLand.
Respectfully,
V41/
