Global Xpress
One network. One World
Imagine a surveillance scenario: A UAV streams live fullmotion video to an offshore naval taskforce via satellite. It
shows a potential threat of terrorist activity at the border.
Within minutes, approval is given for Special Forces to
proceed ashore. The team is soon in place to support local
security forces. They capture the suspects before they
reach the border. Video footage is sent back to confirm their
identity. The land border is once again secure.
It’s a scenario that’s increasingly common.
Airborne, naval and land forces need to
operate seamlessly, enabled by secure,
reliable communications wherever the
mission arises. All this is possible with
Inmarsat Global Xpress (GX). It’s the first
global Ka-band network – delivering secure,
end-to-end wideband connectivity for
mobile operations worldwide.
Built specifically with government customers
in mind, it’s the first global commercial
network that is interoperable with
MILSATCOM Ka-band networks, providing
resilient, worldwide augmentation. So you
can integrate smoothly into GX with your
own platforms or adopt it as a standalone
solution.
4
In any operation, reliability can not
be compromised. Inmarsat offers
unprecedented levels of availability
through a unique combination of Ka-band
and L-band technology within a single
subscription. It’s the only multi-band satellite
network of its kind.
As you would expect, Inmarsat will
offer the highest security levels from
a trusted supplier that’s been serving
government customers with mission-critical
communications for over 30 years.

The technology behind GX
The iDirect Velocity Core Module
and network
Inmarsat’s core Global Xpress service is the
GX Subscription Service, which is built on
the new iDirect Velocity platform. In order
to operate as part of this network, terminals
must integrate approved iDirect Velocity
modems called Core Modules (currently the
CX751 and CX780). Integration of the GX
Core Module also requires compatible RF
components which enable iDirect protocols
like OpenAMIP and OpenBMIP via a digital
interface on the BUC and utilise a 50 MHz
clock.
The CX751 and CX780 are Inmarsat GX
specific modems and cannot be used on
other satellite networks. In order to integrate
these modems terminal manufacturers/
integrators must be signed up as an
Approved Inmarsat Approved Global Xpress
Manufacturer.
Inmarsat Approved Global
Xpress Manufacturers
Inmarsat Approved Global Xpress
Manufacturers are Inmarsat terminal
partners who have signed partner
agreements with Inmarsat to
develop GX Type Approved
terminals for operation over
the GX Subscription Services
(Category 1, 2 and/or 5).

General Availability Modems
Terminal Efficiency Groups
iDirect have released Velocity firmware for
their X7/CX700 modems and are due to
release Velocity software for the 9-series
modems (950mp/e900/9350, etc) in early
2017. These modems will be provided with
iDirect integration guides and Inmarsat will
produce System Definition Manuals (SDMs)
to explain how to integrate GX compatibility
to enable Inmarsat Type Approval.
Government GX Subscription Services
are priced in bands according to the
performance and therefore efficiency of
the terminals utilised to access the service.
The table below describes these price bands
and our Value Added Reseller partners can
provide pricing for these terminals on the GX
Subscription services as required.
The GA modems will enable the Category
4 terminals included in this catalogue to
be upgraded to GX Subscription service
(Category 1,2 or 5) terminals and enable
terminals to be used across GX and
other government networks with software
configuration changes or hardware module
swap outs as required.

Important Characteristics of GX
Terminals
Inmarsat has implemented a specific strategy surrounding the design, production and
operation of GX terminals, to differentiate GX from legacy VSAT systems. Central to this
strategy is the GX core module.
Integration of the GX core module requires
manufacturers to comply with a detailed
integration guide, called the System
Definition Manual (SDM). Similar to the
process of building a BGAN terminal,
manufacturers undergo a series of design
validation, verification and type approval
steps to ensure terminals will operate
correctly within the GX architecture.
There are many features of GX terminals
that make them unique to non-GX
terminals, including security and
authentication mechanisms, terminal
configuration control, operating protocols,
and many other features which are
fundamental to the overall service model
designed by Inmarsat.
Its important to note that simply upgrading a
non-Inmarsat GX Terminal Partner’s terminal
with a GX core module may not satisfy the
requirements for GX Type Approval.
If you would like to integrate a GX Core
Module into your terminals, please contact
your Inmarsat Account Manager.

Network Service Device (NSD)
The NSD is an Inmarsat product providing an edge router capability for the GX managed
services
The Network Service Device (NSD) is a
modular appliance responsible for intelligent
termination of the Global Xpress (GX)
and Broadband Global Access Network
(BGAN) satellite networks, and offers
access to Inmarsat’s Over The Top (OTT) GX
applications including data; voice; video and
content prepositioning.
The NSD is deployed as an appliance
at each Remote Site with interfaces to
terminals (i.e., GX and BGAN); local area
network equipment private branch exchange
(PBX); as well as analogue phones. All
NSDs make use of one-touch deployment
where no manual configuration is needed
to set up the network, except for entering
the unique identifier for the Remote Site

Further developments
Global Xpress is an ever-evolving broadband solution and Inmarsat has invested
a significant amount of resources into ensuring future developments meet your
communications requirements. Current developments underway include:
Government Maritime
ManPack Terminals
Category 2 Land Terminals
All our maritime terminals featured in this
catalogue are suitable for government
customers, but some missions require a little
bit extra.
Inmarsat are engaged with manufacturers
to look at the next generation of highly
portable land terminal solutions with the aim
of providing a truly manpackable solution.
We’ve already introduced the EM Solutions
Cobra to provide a multi-band, WGS
compliant solution and the Intellian
GX100PM to provide a Mil-Std terminal
operating at commercial frequencies, but we
are continuing to work with industry leading
manufacturers to add further capabilities in
order to provide the perfect solution for all
our government customers, across all civil
and military applications and platforms
Such a manpack can already be supported
on Military GX Lease Services with a
Category 4 Type Approval, but Inmarsat
intends to introduce Category 1 Subscription
Service terminals utilising the next
generation iDirect 950mp small form factor
military grade manpack modems as well as
the existing CX751.
The next generation iDirect Defence
modems (950mp small form-factor
manpack modem and the Aero Defence
Core Module) will allow wideband Ka-band
operation across the full 2 GHz of the
Commercial and Military Ka-bands
76
Inmarsat will engage with VARs for feedback
as development progresses.
The use of these modems will enable a
range of existing Category 1 and Category
4 terminals to be converted to wideband
operation, which will allow the use of iDirect
Velocity based services across commercial
and military Ka-band on GX and for iDirect
Evolution based services to be used on GX
Lease and non-GX national services.
