Engineering 9 – Statics
Sample Final Exam
This exam is open book, but closed notes. Please work carefully and show all
necessary diagrams. Show all of your work. NEATNESS COUNTS. Round
your answers to 3 significant figures.
Please box your answers. If a problem has more than one part or answer,
group all of the answers together at the end of the problem and
box
them.
(You can also box each of them separately where you determined it in the middle
of the problem. )
1.
Find the coordinates of the centroid of the area shown.
2.
The square threaded screw of the clamp has a mean diameter of 14 mm
and a lead of 6 mm. If μs = 0.2 for the threads, and the moment applied
to the handle is 1.5 N-m, determine the compressive force F on the block.
3. & 4. Do 2 of the following 4 problems (A, B, C, and D). Indicate clearly which 2 you have chosen to
do.
A
If the balloon is subjected to a net uplift force of F = 800 N, determine the tension developed
in ropes AB, AC, and AD.
B
Determine the required magnitude of force F if the resultant couple moment on the frame is
200 lb-ft, clockwise.
C
Determine the horizontal and vertical components of force at the pin A and the reaction at the
rocker B of the curved beam.
D
If the coefficient of static friction between the man’s shoes and the pole is μs = 0.6, determine
the minimum coefficient of static friction required between the belt and the pole at A in order to
support the man. The man has a weight of 180 lb and a center of gravity at G.
