Letter from the editors
Dear readers,
We are delighted to bring to you MIT Computer Users Group Newsletter! We would like to begin
by extending our immense gratitude to our faculty for their guidance and support in making the
newsletter. Also kudos to the newsletter team for their hardwork and dedication. The work wouldn’t have been so great without your inputs!
Our aim is to bring forth such marvelous initiatives and innovations and thereby provide our fellow students with food for thought about not only cutting edge technologies, but out of the box
thinking too!
Here’s hoping this issue lives up to the MCUG tagline “Sharing knowledge, Bridging gaps” Let’s
come together and make this newsletter an iconic platform for revolutionary ideas and IT breakthroughs!
Thanks and Regards,

Ethical Hacking
and philosophy
A ethical hacking (penetration test), occasionally pen-test,
is a method of evaluating the security of a computer system or network by simulating an attack from malicious outsiders (who do
not have an authorized means of accessing the organization's systems) and malicious insiders (who have some level of authorized
access). The process involves an active analysis of the system for
any potential vulnerabilities that could result from poor or improper system configuration, both known and unknown hardware or
software flaws, or operational weaknesses in process or technical
countermeasures. There are some applications:
OWASP:OWASP, the Open Web Application Security Project,
an open source web application security documentation project,
has produced documents such as the OWASP Guide and the widely adopted OWASP Top 10 awareness document.
PENTOO:Pentoo is a Live CD and Live USB designed for penetration testing and security assessment. Based on Gentoo Linux,
Pentoo is provided both as 32 and 64 bit live-cd. It features packet
injection patched wi-fi drivers, GPGPU cracking software, and
lots of tools for penetration testing and security assessment.
W3Af :(web application attack and Audit Framework) is another
app. of ethical hacking.

How good are you at programming? Predict the right output of this program and you’ll know!
Did you know?
"The term reboot comes from the middle age (before
computers). Horses who stopped in mid-stride required a
boot to the rear to start again. Thus the term to rearboot, later
abbreviated into reboot."

History of Computers

Microsoft ships Windows 95
Thanks to possibly the largest product launch campaign in history, Windows 95's sales exceeded all
predictions. Strangely, it was two years to the day that Apple lost its look and feel copyright infringement suit against Microsoft, a suit whose main arguments centered around many features now
found on Windows 95.

IBM introduces its Personal Computer
IBM introduces its Model 5150, lending legitimacy to microprocessorbased computers and giving birth to the Personal Computer (PC).
IBM's first PC ran with a 4.77 MHz Intel 8088 microprocessor and used
Microsoft's MS-DOS operating system. In 1983, Compaq Computer
Corp. released the first clone of the IBM PC, a machine embodying an
identical copy of the PC architecture -- which IBM had made publicly
available -- and marking the gradual decline of IBM's share of the personal computer market. The PC architecture, based on Intel's x86 microprocessor family, continues to dominate desktop computing with over
85% of PCs using an x86-based CPU.

Radio Shack announces TRS-80 computer
Radio Shack announces its TRS-80 Model I, the company's first personal computer. Equipped with 4KB of RAM, cassette-tape storage, and a
built-in BASIC interpreter, the TRS-80 was one of the first massmarketed personal computer (along with the Commodore PET and Apple II). At a time when most microcomputers came in kit form and appealed to hobbyists, these three computers addressed the average person
and were very popular in schools Radio Shack sold more than 200,000 TRS-80 computers.

The first computer User Group is founded
SHARE was founded by users of IBM's Model 704 computer, shown
here. SHARE is founded in order for the growing community of IBM
computer users to exchange information and programs. The first meeting included scientists and engineers whose companies had ordered
IBM's newest computer, the 704. Sparked by quick growth and the fact
that its members were some of IBM's largest customers, the group had
significant influence over IBM designs and customer support.
