Edgewood Elementary School Respect, Responsibility, Safety April 24, 2017 Dear Parents and/or Guardians, As you may have already heard from your child, it was reported to us that a bear was spotted near the school during this past weekend. It is likely that the bear is just passing through but all wildlife should be considered dangerous and should never be approached. For more information please go to: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wld/documents/bear_hm.htm. Remember if you spot a bear in a residential area or in a tree with people nearby: • Remain calm. Often, the bear is just passing through and, if it finds no food source, will simply move on. • Keep away from the bear. Warn others to keep away as well, and bring your children and pets into the house. • If the bear appears to be threatening, persistent, or aggressive, call the Conservation Officer in your area. If there is no Conservation Officer in your area, phone local police or the RCMP. • If conflict should occur, do not attempt to resolve it yourself. The Conservation Officer is a professional and has been trained to deal with wildlife. Please contact the school office if you have any questions, and thank you for helping to keep our students safe and see attached "Wildlife Awareness - April 24, 2017" letter for more information. Hard to believe that there are only two months remaining and that spring is here and summer is just around the corner. At this time of year, students are excited to be outside playing after school and many are involved in activities and sports. Please keep in mind that these little bodies and minds still need their sleep to be refreshed and ready to work each school day. Also, try to make sure that there is time in busy schedules for assigned homework or to practice reading, math facts, and spelling! Edgewood students are continuing to focus on "the 7 Habits of highly effective people" by Stephen Covey. Student planners have this included resource for you to use at home with your child so that they can also be highly effective in their personal lives. During this month's school wide assembly students were given the following information about Habit 5. Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Listen first, and then talk. People don’t always say how they’re feeling inside. That’s why it’s important to try to understand them. Use your ears to hear what people say, your eyes to see if the words are true, and your heart to understand how they feel. When people know you’re trying to understand them, they’re more likely to talk about things with you. Ears are pretty special. They help you hear what people say. But sometimes the words people say don’t match the way they act or sound. That’s why you need your ears, eyes, and heart to be a good listener. Use your ears to hear; Use your eyes to watch actions and Use your heart to understand. April's virtue is "Courage" and is the discovery that you may not win, and trying when you know you can lose. We need courage everyday in our relationships, in dealing with negative situations, to be ourselves, to pursue our dreams, to do the right thing, to right a wrong, and to stand for what is important regardless of public opinion. Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, "I'll try again tomorrow". -Mary Anne Radmacher March's virtue was "Tolerance" and Habit 4 was Think Win-Win. No one likes to lose. It's much more fun to "Think Win-Win!" Win-win thinking lets everyone get what they want. It lets everyone be happy. Look for ways to act out win-win thinking. Work as a team. Look for good ideas. Share. And find creative answers that everyone likes. Next month's draw for a pizza party will be at the next school wide assembly on May 17th. Jump Rope for Heart Thank you to all students who participated in this year's event. The Heart and Stroke Foundation is very thankful for our outstanding efforts supporting the Jump Rope for Heart Program which encourages healthy lifestyles choices! Three Edgewood students were awarded certificates for raising a significant amount of money. Congratulations Noah Jancicka, Shadyn Dhansaw and Liam Martin. BCAA Play Here playground revitalization nomination Edgewood Elementary PAC nominated our school for a playground revitalization and improvement project. We are very grateful for being nominated and we hope we win. For more information about the nomination and the application which includes an amazing video please follow the link(s) below. https://www.bcaaplayhere.com/ https://www.bcaaplayhere.com/space/a53cb224-9bcd-5389-87103f1ac8113c33 BCAA has a long history of protecting kids in BC, on and off the road. The goal of BCAA Play Here is to continue this tradition by giving children in BC better places to play. To accomplish this objective, we’re looking for play areas around the province that are in need of rejuvenation. Play areas can include a park, a playground, a sporting facility or an afterschool study area – if it’s a place where kids can spend their time and develop valuable life skills, we want to hear about how it can be improved to make it a safer, better place for kids to play! At the end of the contest period, the 3 winning spaces will each receive revitalization worth up to $100,000. Report Cards Reminder that there will be no Report Cards this year until the end of June, 2017. Instead, communicating student learning will be ongoing throughout the year. Communication will be made at least five times during the school year and a final written summative report will be provided at the end of the school year. Please remember to check you child's progress using Freshgrade or contact your child's teacher directly. Final written summative report At the end of the school year, or if a student moves, parents will receive a final written summative report. The purpose of the summative report is to outline and summarize the child’s achievement in the required areas of learning outlined in the curriculum, for that school year. The summative report may contain information about the child’s strengths, areas the child is working on, and needs for further development. It will also provide information on the child’s achievement and performance in relation to age/grade expectations. In addition, the summative report may provide information on ways to support the child at school and home. Self-Assessment: Core Competencies The final written summative report will also include a student self-assessment of one of the Core Competencies (Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social), completed with the support and guidance of teachers. The Core Competencies underpin all provincial curricula and are relevant to the development of Educated Citizens. The process of self-assessment can build student ownership and voice, and give students increased responsibility for the acquisition of these competencies. Through self-assessment, students can set yearly learning goals and identify ways in which they will further acquire and develop increased skill and ability in these areas.
