Descriptions: The Six Biomes
Tundra is cold and dry, receiving less than 25 em of precipitation per year. The ground stays
permanently frozen all year long. The growing season is only about 60 days so there are no
trees and very few plants in this biome.
Boreal forest receives 35- 40 em of precipitation each year. The dominant organisms in this
biome are coniferous, or evergreen, trees with thin, needle-like leaves.
Temperate forest receives 75-150 em of precipitation each year. The dominant organisms in
this biome are deciduous trees with broad leaves. Each autumn, the leaves in this forest turn
colour and fall to the ground.
Tropical rain forest receives more than 150 em of rainfall each year. This warm and wet climate
supports the growth of various trees and vegetation.
Grassland receives 25-75 em of rainfall each year. The dominant organisms in this biome are
grasses, and the soil is very rich. Agriculture usually takes place in grasslands.
Deserts are very dry areas which receive less than 25 em of rainfall each year. Vegetation is
scarce in this biome.
