2014-2015 Annual Report

2014-2015
Annual Report
“Out” with the old, in with the “new”?
I vividly remember walking into the
teen center twelve years ago as an
intern and being impressed with the
makeshift wall dividers made from
old doors, the painted jeans hanging
from the ceiling, teens playing their
guitars on a pink couch, and my first
project — offering guidance for a
dance marathon.
Fast forward twelve years, and you’ll
see that I’ve signed on to do a whole
lot more. I am very grateful for the
opportunity to serve as the Executive
Director of the Neutral Zone.
(not really new)
Lori, our long-beloved newly
promoted Executive Director
Today, the Neutral Zone is a thriving arts and leadership organization. Our teens
create new initiatives, facilitate programs, and provide leadership at the highest
level of the organization. Our staff is highly trained to offer quality programs that
emphasize creativity, entrepreneurship, and community well-being. In addition,
our Board of Directors and volunteers from the broader community bring
commitment, expertise, and resources necessary for our long-term sustainability.
This past year, Neutral Zone has offered impressive programs for 471 youth
with over 16,000 teen visits to NZ. We have also increased our outreach to
offer school-based programming for another 500 students through a Writer in
Residence Program, an initiative to build diversity councils and support Gay
Straight Alliances across Washtenaw County, and connecting to the Rising
Scholars Program in the Ann Arbor Public Schools.
Neutral Zone’s new consulting arm, Youth-Driven Spaces, ensures that we are
continuously thinking of how our practice reflects our youth-driven mission and
engages our teens and programs with youth across the state of Michigan.
Looking ahead, we know that there will be many more teens in need of what the
Neutral Zone offers. Our Board of Directors has now challenged us to raise a
three month operating reserve to ensure that we always have the necessary funds
available to support more teens, and can cover the many ordinary expenses such
as keeping the lights on, while retaining quality staff to work with the teens. We
have turned this challenge into the Endless Zone Campaign to raise $200,000.
Many have already donated generously and we hope that more stakeholders of
the NZ will choose to support the initiative.
I deeply appreciate the many contributions including ideas, talent, expertise,
and funds, that many of you have contributed to ensure that the Neutral Zone
continues to positively impact the lives of youth.
With appreciation,
(not really out)
John, our beloved former
Exectutive Director
It’s been an incredible year for Neutral
Zone! I am honored to have served as
Executive Director for over nine years
and am excited to be in my new role as
Director of Strategic Initiatives. My good
friend and colleague, Lori Roddy, assumed
the role of Executive Director midyear, and
brought new energy, ideas and continued
passion which will take our organization to
new heights.
Simultaneously, I was provided the
tremendous opportunity to help spread
Neutral Zone’s ‘youth driven’ approach to
after-school and high school settings that
serve teens.
We have developed something very special
in Ann Arbor, and an abundance of places
from around Michigan (and beyond!) are
eager to learn from us. Not only are we
helping other places empower and develop
youth as we have, it’s also been a great
professional development opportunity for
our staff and teens to be able to train and
coach others.
I look forward to continuing to play
an integral role at Neutral Zone, while
supporting other organizations to
strengthen their missions through
involving youth in deep and meaningful
ways as we do at Neutral Zone.
THANKS TO YOU,
A LOT OF GOOD
HAPPENS IN
ONE NEUTRAL
ZONE YEAR
Teens Know the S.C.O.R.E.
Neutral Zone’s education programs are targeted to get
teens the support they need for college and career
success. Drop-in homework help with free tutoring, and
college and career preparation are delivered through
S.C.O.R.E. (School and Career Opportunities aRe
Endless).
Through this program, 15 teens who are identified as
high-potential but high-risk students serve as paid
S.C.O.R.E. interns for the school year. These teens assist
with Neutral Zone programs and activities, work with
individual mentors, and meet weekly for leadership and
professional skills training.
In March, our S.C.O.R.E interns planned and hosted
an event that brought together students from the Rising
Scholars programs at three Ann Arbor high schools.
This second annual event gathered 80 teens for
workshops to prepare them for the college and job
application process. Presenters included Princeton
Review, MSU, and Michigan Works.
A few weeks later, Neutral Zone followed up by hosting
a job fair where teens could interview and apply for jobs
with local employers including Lucky’s Market,
Washtenaw County Parks & Rec, and El Harissa.
Artist Captured Live (and Released)
How many teens can say they produced and distributed
a live recording of an up-and-coming artist? Neutral
Zone’s Youth Owned Records (YOR) teens can. After
signing talented teen singer-songwriter Katherine
Hepburn to the YOR label, the group began recording
in the Orpheum, NZ’s studio.
But as work progressed, they felt something was
missing—they just weren’t getting the sound they
wanted. YOR teens decided to host a live performance
and arranged to record it at the Kerrytown Concert
House. The live recording did the trick and CD
pre-sales at the performance fully funded the
production and recording costs up front.
You can buy Katherine’s
debut CD “Over Easy” on

Exile on Washington Street
Neutral Zone was thrilled to take on the 33rd annual
Potential Art Exhibit to showcase the work of
Washtenaw County high school artists. A group of teen
curators came together at the NZ to plan, promote,
install and work the show which they named “Potential
in Exile.”
The week-long exhibit opened with a reception and
awards ceremony on April 24th — attended by a crowd
of around 250 teens, parents and community members.
More than 300 pieces of art were submitted for the
show from 12 area high schools.
The 60 pieces selected for the exhibit featured diverse
representation of media including drawing, painting,
jewelry, ceramics, printmaking, photography and mixed
media.
Ivan Soucy, a Visual Arts Council facilitator and teen
leader for the Potential Art Show, took the show’s
“In Exile” theme to a whole new level. He created an
installation piece for the show; an experiential room
that incorporated sound, illustration and video.
Got Game?
Comics and video games were the focus of “From the
Ground Up” NZ’s first design studio workshop. Teen
participants were able to create and bring their own
characters to life in a video game of their own design.
Outstanding community partners helped make the
program possible. Renowned comic book artist Jerzy
Drozd guided teens through the character development
process and Community Television Network’s (CTN)
video technology brought them to life. GameStart
School was on hand to teach participants the art and
science of video game development, and the Ann Arbor
District Library provided gaming opportunities after
the workshop. More than 60 students from five area
high schools attended the event which was generously
supported by Toyota and Calty Design Research.
Not So Quiet, Riot
Riot Youth, Neutral Zone's program for LGBTQ
youth, launched a student-driven, participatory research
project this year. After surveying more than 2,000 area
teens on school safety climate for students who identify
as LGBTQ, Riot Youth teens looked for a creative
way to share the results and their recommendations.
With funding through the Ann Arbor Public Schools
Foundation, they initiated a digital storytelling project
to record and share the experiences of LGBTQ youth.
In March, they hosted a day-long digital storytelling
workshop and teacher training. Over 30 students
from four area high schools across the county attended.
In partnership with Community Television Network
(CTN), the Riot Youth teens collected stories from
students about their own experiences in their schools.
Currently, Riot Youth teens are working to develop a
curriculum to present to their peers at local schools. The
goal of the presentations is to create awareness, increase
understanding, and to motivate teens to make their
schools safer and more inclusive of all students.
