Literacy Home Learning Oak Class Term 2 Below you will see 7 tasks that cover our literacy topics along with some Geography and History and Science. Each week I would like you to complete one of the tasks and hand it in on Tuesday. The final piece of work from this set is due Tuesday 16th December, therefore you will only need to choose 5 of the tasks to complete. Write a report or newspaper article about something that has happened to you. Remember that this is not a story but should be written in the third person. 2. The rain fell gently like diamonds, sparkling on the leaves in the sunlight. I would like you to see how many different ways you can rewrite this sentence without changing any of the words (although you can remove-e the word ‘the’ if you want to). If you need to please change the punctuation. 3. Grammar task on subordinate clauses Put a comma on each side of the subordinate clause. 1. The man clutching his bag tightly shouted at the thieves. 2. A tree swaying violently in the wind suddenly fell on the roof. 3. Henry an experienced cyclist found the route easy. 4. Millions of people even old ones are learning to use computers. 5. My last thought just before I fell asleep was how much I was dreading tomorrow. 6. An enormous creature covered in mud and dripping with water appeared out of the mist. 7. The kitten a beautiful tabby was quite enchanting. 8. Judy my mother and Tom my father went to visit Granddad. 9. Laura my older sister and Jane my best friend played a game of snap. Write these sentences out adding a subordinate clause to each. Remember to include the commas. 1. Lucy went to the police station. 2. The man shouted at the thieves. 3. The girl didn’t catch the bus. 4. Tabby caught a mouse in the hall. 5. My Uncle and my Cousin went to a big theme park. 4. We will be looking at prefixes of words – e.g. un, bi, sub. I would like you to find 5 prefixes (you can use these three if you want), find out what they mean and then find 3 examples of each one being used. 5. Find a newspaper article that interests you. Please answer the following questions about it: a. b. c. d. e. f. What is the headline? What is the article about? Who is involved? Why is it news? Are there any quotes in the article? What does the reporter think of the event – is it good, bad or is the reporter neutral? g. What techniques or language has the reporter used to make you want to read the article? h. What interests you about the article? 6. Find an old film (from the 20th Century) that you are interested in or enjoy watching. Write a review of the film to encourage others to watch it. 7. Research 20th Century children’s authors. Who can you find? Which ones have you read? Which books would you like to read in the future?
