A TWIG OR TWO
By Charlene Cleveland Shields
GREETINGS FROM THE HEARTLAND!
Basically, the crops are in, leaves are raked, and folks are preparing for winter here in White Co. As for me, I
have one gingko tree which loses its leaves in a 12 or 15-hour period. I’m betting it happens sometime this week.
The leaves are distinctive in color and shape, so if they blow around town, everyone knows who is to blame.
Since we’ve last contacted you, we’ve had four special days: Halloween, Election Day, Veterans’ Day, and
Thanksgiving. (Aren’t you glad the election is over? I had about reached my limit of tolerance on TV
commercials.) Of all holidays, Thanksgiving is my favorite. Now left for me to do besides get ready for Christmas
is travel into Southern Illinois, down around Crab Orchard Lake, to see and hear the thousands of geese who fly that
far south every year. Many of them winter over there, while great flocks go on South. I’m never too sure about my
terms. It’s “flock” if the geese are on land, “skein” if they’re in flight, and “gaggle” if they’re on water. Whatever,
it’s always a thrill for me to see so many creatures and hear the deafening roar of them chattering while they’re
feeding on land.
We haven’t heard from our members on the East Coast concerning the devastation from Hurricane Sandy. Let
us hope they lived where damage was minimal.
Meanwhile, I’ve gotten out my winter cap and mittens to wear during the early morning daily trek the dog and
I take.

Our annual fall luncheon was a success, and the speaker and wife, in period costume, were interesting as they
talked on Illinois and the War of 1812. At least two of my ancestors fought in that war—one from Pennsylvania
who eventually made his way to Washington Territory and received 320 acres of land from the government and
became the only veteran of that war buried in the entire state, William C. Rutledge. The other fought with Andrew
Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans, and later looked for gold in California, Phillip Crowder.
#####
CREDO AT CHRISTMAS
At Christmastime I believe the things that children do.
I believe with English children that holly placed in windows will protect our homes from evil.
I believe with Greek children that coins concealed in freshly baked loaves of bread will bring good luck to
anyone who finds them.
I believe with German children that the sight of a Christmas tree will lessen hostility among adults.
I believe with Dutch children that the horse Sleipner will fly through the sky and fill the earth with joy.
I believe with Swedish children that Jultomte will come and deliver gifts to the poor as well as to the rich.
I believe with Bulgarian children that sparks from a Christmas log will create warmth in human souls.
I believe with American children that the sending of Christmas cards will build friendships.
I believe with all children that there will be peace on earth.—Author Unknown

Perhaps the best Yuletide decoration is being wreathed in Smiles, so Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah,
and joyous Kwanzaa, everybody!

G.S.W.C. Member Taken By Death
Long-time member I. J. Dartt was taken by death October 18, 2012, after a lengthy struggle with
cancer and other problems.
She was a native of New Harmony, IN, and owned an insurance agency there for many years. In
addition to working on family history as a hobby, I. J. was a historian of the town and knew many
engaging stories about New Harmony.
To those of us who had a long-standing acquaintance with I. J., it came as a revelation that her name
was Irma Joyce.
New Harmony will be a less interesting place without I. J. around.
Early History of New Harmony, Indiana
If you aren’t familiar with the history of I. J. Dartt’s hometown, New Harmony, IN, you might wish
to find out more about it. Harmony was first an experiment in communism by a group of Germans, led
by Father Rapp, who came into the wilderness along the banks of the Wabash and founded a quite
successful colony while the members lived celibate lives and awaited the second coming of Christ.
Later on Father Rapp sold the place to an Englishman who had become rich through ownership of
several mills. This man, Robert Owen, was interested in social reform and brought many of the most
knowledgeable people in Europe to this little community.
Today what remains of this sleepy little town hosts many workshops attended by people from all
over the world.
Raleigh Sutton Shares Genealogy Information
Member Raleigh Sutton of Elgin is a veteran genealogist and always generous about sharing what he
puts together. His family recently had their 75th Sutton Reunion.
Raleigh put together a rather large, spiral-bound book full of pictures, notes, stories and genealogy to
give to members who attended. What a wonderful “party favor!”
Raleigh always remembers to send us a copy of anything he produces in the history line. So we
thank him for his latest, “The Family of Raleigh Liggett ‘R. L.’ Sutton.”
Raleigh commented how he got the name “Raleigh” was a mystery for a long time. Finally, he
connected with a Tennessee cousin and found the name among cousins was “Riley.” West Tennessee
accent turn “Riley” into “Raleigh,” and in East Tennessee it is pronounced “Ray-lee.”
“Roots & Branches” 2nd Decade Renewal Reminder
REMINDER: Since this is the last newsletter for 2012, for the majority of you, your subscriptions
are up at the end of the year. So use the handy subscription blank found elsewhere in this paper, and send
it along with your check for $20 in order to receive the 2013 newsletter. We are trying to hold the line on
costs, and are sending the subscription for the same amount we started with ten years ago. We thank you
for being such loyal readers. We continue requesting your input as to what you like to see in the
newsletter, and fervently request you to submit articles.
In 2013, we expect to start our second decade of publication in spite of the dire predictions of the
Mayans that the world will come to an end December 21, 2012. We concede the Mayans were pretty
smart about some things, but as for this prediction, we place them in the same group as all the other
prophets of doom down through the years. We’ll look forward to serving you in 2013!!!

Bioarchaeological Investigations of the Bowling Cemetery
(The following genealogical material was copied from “Bioarchaeological Investigations of the Bowling
Cemetery, Hawthorne Township, White County, Illinois.”)
Dewey/Denny Family
Benjamin Dewey or Denny (different spellings in the census records, deed records, and on historic
maps) purchased the land containing the Bowling Cemetery from John R. Jones in 1870, and he owned it
for approximately one year, when he sold it to Harry Chism in 1871. The 1871 map of the area showed
B. Denny as the owner of the land containing the Bowling Cemetery, with H. Chism and A. Williams
owning the properties to the north and south, respectively.
Benjamin Dewey/Denny was not residing in White County when the 1860 census was taken. In the
1870 census for White County, Benjamin Denny was listed as a 25-year-old, single farm laborer who was
born in Missouri. He was residing in the household of Bazel Williams, who was listed as a 21-year-old
farmer who was born in Illinois and who owned $400 in real estate and $250 in personal property. Also
listed in the household were Williams’ 18-year-old wife, Winna, and their 8-month-old daughter, Ida.
Harry Chism and his family were residing in the adjacent household.
Benjamin Dewey/Denny appeared to have moved to Missouri between 1870 and 1880, as he was
listed as a 36-year-old farmer in Douglas County, Missouri, in the 1880 census. It is not clear how long
the Dewey/Denny family lived in White County, but the Bowling Cemetery property was owned by him
for less than one year, suggesting a transitory occupation in the area. It is unclear if anyone in the DeweyDenny family could have been interred in the Bowling Cemetery.
Chism Family
Harry Chism purchased the land containing the Bowling Cemetery from Benjamin Dewey/Denny in
1871, and it appears that he already owned the land to the immediate north at that time. Harry Chism was
African American, and he may have come to White County circa 1830.
It appears that Harry Chism was born into slavery in Tennessee. Based on data provided by the
descendants of the European-American Chism family, African-American Harry Chism was owned by
European-American William Chism, and Harry Chism may have followed, or been brought by his former
master to White County, Illinois, circa 1820-1830.
William Chism was not found in the 1790, 1800, or 1810 censuses for North Carolina or Tennessee.
Information provided by descendants indicated that William Chism, who was born circa 1750s in what
was at the time North Carolina (the area later became part of Tennessee), owned slaves during the early
nineteenth century, and records of the transferral to and from William Chism and his family indicated
much slave selling/transferring between 1805 and 1813, and again circa 1829. This included a transferral
by gift of a 6- or 7-year-old slave girl named Olley to William Chism’s daughter and son-in-law, Betsey
(nee Chism) and Henry Starr on June 17, 1805 in North Carolina.
William Chism sold two slave children, Winny (a girl about 13 years old) and Alfred (a boy about 10
years old) to William Hogard for $650 on September 15, 1809, and there may have been an earlier sale of
Alfred the previous year from William Chism to Joseph Bogard.
(He may have been
purchased/transferred back to William Chism by Joseph Bogard). William Chism sold a 3- or 4-year-old
female slave named Franky to Charles Bogard, but the date was not listed, and he gifted his children
(William, James, and Patsey Chism) a female slave named Winny on September 18, 1809.
The trade or sale of two teenage slave girls, Hannah and Winny, occurred repeatedly over the latter
part of 1809, when both were passed between William Chism’s children, Patsey (nee Chism) Williams
and James Chism, and a man named Charles Stewart. On September 3, 1811, the children of William
Chism (i.e., Taylor, James, William Jr., and Patsey) purchased a 7-year-old slave girl named Franky from
James Stewart for $100 with the encumbrance that Franky would remain with and wait upon Mrs. Polly
Chism (the wife of William Chism and mother of Taylor, James, William Jr. and Patsey) during her
natural life. Finally, on November 7, 1828, James Chism sold for $200 to his father, William Chism, all
right of title to interest in the following slaves: Franky and her children, Thamer, Mary Ann and

Harry, and he transferred the claim of his mother Polly Chism (wife of William Chism Sr.) at that same
time. It appears that the slave Harry, son of the slave Franky, was the Harry Chism who later owned the
property containing the Bowling Cemetery in White County, Illinois.
William Chism was listed as the head of household in Montgomery County, TN, in the 1820 census.
His household consisted of one white male and one white female over 45 years old, two white males
between 16 and 26 years old, and one white male between 16 and 18 years old (?). Also listed in the
household were one male slave under 14 years old and one female slave between 14 and 26 years old. It
is possible that the young male slave was Harry Chism, and that the older female slave was his mother,
but this could not be confirmed because of the poor records available for the early nineteenth century.
William Chism’s son, John Chism, first purchased land in White County, IL (T5SR10E, Sections 4
and 5) in 1816, and he was living there when the 1820 census was taken. William Chism and at least two
of his other sons, Taylor Chism and Henry Chism, moved from Tennessee to White County, Illinois,
between 1820 and 1830. The WCHS family files information indicated that the Chism family slave,
Harry, rode to White County, Illinois, from Tennessee behind his master (listed as John Chism, but may
have been William Chism) on his horse, and that he was given his freedom upon arrival there. The family
files also suggested that Harry Chism’s wife name was Lettie, and that both were buried in the Brown
Cemetery located in Phillips Township, without gravemarkers (this could not be substantiated).
Three Chism families were listed in the 1830 census for White County, Illinois, including William
Chism, John Chism, and Henry Chism. No African Americans were residing in any of these three
households, and it is unclear where Harry Chism and his mother, Franky, and sib- lings, Thamer and
Mary Ann, were residing when the census was taken. It is possible that only Harry Chism came to White
County, Illinois, with the European-American Chism family, and that his mother and siblings remained in
Tennessee. No further information about Harry Chism’s early life was found. As a side note, William
Chism’s grandson (William Chism) through his son, John Chism, eventually married into the Williams
family, marrying Tabitha Williams, the daughter of Aaron Williams, Sr.
Harry Chism had established his own home in Hawthorne Township by 1850. The 1850 census
listed him as a 30-year-old Tennessee-born farmer who owned $350 worth of property. He married
Elizabeth Harris in February 1849 in White County, and she was listed as his 29-year-old Tennessee-born
wife in the 1850 census. Residing with them was their 6-month-old son, George.
In the 1860 census, Harry Chism was listed as a 40–year-old farmer who owned $4,200 in real estate
and $2,000 in personal property. Residing with him was his 33-year-old wife, Elizabeth, and their 7
children, all born in Illinois: 11-year-old son, George K.; 9-year-old son, Andrew J.; 8-year-old son,
Solomon; 6-year-old son, Harry; 5-year-old son, Wesley; 3-year-old daughter, Mary/Polly A.; and 1-yearold son, Jonas F. Also residing with them was a 19-year-old black farm laborer named John Arnton. He
was also born in Illinois.
Harry Chism purchased and sold items at a store in Carmi between 1859 and 1861. It appears that he
was selling products from his farm in Hawthorne Township, consisting primarily of butter and eggs. He
would bring in eggs by the dozen and would typically be credited with l0 cents per dozen, and for butter,
he would receive between 15 and 20 cents per pound. On ten occasions, Harry Chism purchased items on
credit from the store, and these consisted of yards of calico, domestic, gingham, “lason,” and “ledine”
fabric, flax thread and fine thread, buttons, rib-bon, soda, two pocket books, three white bowls, hoops, a
broom, a pocketknife for a boy, and six straw hats. Soda was the only “grocery” item purchased, and
most of the purchases at this store were of materials used for clothes making (i.e., yardage of inexpensive
fabrics, buttons, and thread), or other household items, such as hoops, a broom, and bowls. The
pocketbooks and pocketknife may have been gifts for his family, and the straw hats were purchased all at
once on May 24, 1860, perhaps for use by his family during the summer. The clothes-making supplies
suggest that the Chism family made their own everyday clothing, and the ribbons may have been used to
adorn clothing items or girl’s hair.
In the 1870 census, Harry Chism had increased his real estate to $10,500 and his personal estate to
(Continued on Page 85)

$1,600. Three additional children were born between the 1860 and 1870 censuses including 9-year-old
son, William, 8-year-old daughter, Susan; and 6-year-old son, Aaron. Missing from the 1870 census was
son, Jonas F. Chism, who was born circa 1859 and probably died between 1860 and 1870. He may have
been interred in the Bowling Cemetery, as Harry Chism owned property in Section 22 during this period.
Also living with the Harry Chism family in 1870 was an 18-year-old female, mulatto domestic servant
named Augusta Burriss. She was born in Illinois.-----To be continued.

Sally Heird Asks For Your Help
HELP! HELP! Sally Heird says:
My latest endeavor is to try to find the burial place and information on my g-g-grandfather, John
Goodman. He was b. 08-25-1830 in either Kentucky or Tennessee and d. 09-18-1864 in White County,
IL. He is said to be buried in unnamed cemetery in White County (per Cemeteries of White County V. l,
pp. 290-292.) He firstly was married to Mary L. Underwood, in 1851, and she died before 1860, leaving
one son, Samuel J. Goodman. He then married a Margaret Wease. They had two sons, William Edward
and John Wesley. After John’s death Margaret married a man with the surname Brent. In investigation
some years ago near the Walnut Grove Church and Cemetery in Brownsville, Heralds Prairie Township, I
was told there was a Goodman Cemetery in close proximity but I was short on time and could not pursue
it at that time. Now, I am again trying to find the burial place of John Goodman or connect with any
Goodman relation in the area. If anyone has any information I would certainly appreciate hearing from
you.
Sally J. Heird -- 2205 Chipping Campden Road -- Argyle, Texas 76226
(According to Vaught’s cemetery book which Sally mentioned, there is a Goodman buried on the
Frank Cutchin Farm Section 13.–“South 1150E down a farm road” added by a researcher. Also, there is
a Robert E. Goodman buried with a few others on a farm on South Possum Road found by Mr. Sailer.
Remember, this is being quoted from a book which came out in 1970 so they may not be there now.
We can find no record of a Goodman Cemetery, excepting in books of early veterans which mentions
their burial place as Goodman Cemetery.
There were Goodmans in several different townships, but the only mention of a cemetery by that
name seems to have been in Herald’s Prairie Township.)
Obituary: Rev. J.T. Williams

He leaves to mourn his departure five children, 25 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, four greatgreat grandchildren, and a host of friends and neighbors. He departed this life Dec. 11, at 4:50 p.m. at the
home of his daughter north of Greenfield, MO., aged 92 years 9 months and 6 days.
They moved to Newton County MO in 1878, moving to Cedar County in 1881. He spent 17 years
there during which he was licensed in 1890 at Prairie Valley Church and ordained in 1891 to preach the
gospel. He pastored several churches in Vernon, Cedar and Dade County and did considerable
evangelistic work.
In 1898 he moved to Dade County settling on a farm four miles east of Greenfield.
In 1906 he moved to Ernest, northwest of Greenfield. Here his wife Zilpah passed away on
September 28, 1923.
(This obit was in our files with no notation as to what newspaper it came from. At no time during the
listing of facts does it give the year of Rev. Williams’ death. Also, it does not give his parents’ names or
grandparents’ names.)
Wisdom from Senior Citizens
I started with nothing. I still have most of it.
I went to school to become a wit, only got halfway through.
It’s not hard to meet expenses; they are everywhere.
I wish the buck stopped here! I could use a few.

Newspapers, Extracted by Verla Fleck Young and the Genealogy Society of White County Illinois. The second of a three-volume set, these
books are a must for serious Illinois researchers! As time went by, more and more information about family and relatives was added to the
obituary notices, sometimes going back several generations. 772 pages, 8½ x 11, hard-cover, indexed, $52.
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN, Volume 1, 1819 – 1927: Extracts of Obituary and Death Notices from White County Illinois Area
Newspapers. Extracted by Verla Fleck Young and the Genealogy Society of White County Illinois, Verla Young spent thousands of hours
extracting death information from 1872 – 1946 Carmi newspaper microfilm, and members of the Genealogy Society of White County have added
extractions from 1819 – 1871 newspapers in Shawneetown and Grayville. The result is a compilation of “dead relatives,” with dates, and, in later
years, many of their spouses, parents, siblings, etc. Some years were not microfilmed, and some had missing articles or sections, but the entries
that were readable are provided here for your genealogical enlightenment. 826 pages, 8½ x 11, hard-cover, indexed, $52.
THE BACKWARD BOOK: Extracts From White County Illinois Newspapers, 1899 – 1955, by Barry C. Cleveland, editor of The Carmi

in most cases, cause of death and parents’ names—including that often-elusive mother’s maiden name! Often, the survivors are listed with their
address at the time of death, which might give an answer to that common question: “Where the heck did they GO?” 206 pages, 8½ x 11, softcover, alphabetical, with full-name index of subsidiary names. $17.
I NEVER LEARNED TO MARCH, by Charles O. “Bill” Williams. Bill grew up on a farm in the Burnt Prairie area, surviving tornados,
floods, dust storms, and the depression years. He tells of his experiences in the Navy, during WW II, and his extensive travel to some very exotic
places around the world. Bill’s sense of humor is apparent, and you’ll laugh along with him as he relates his stories, looking back on the
Twentieth Century with a tongue-in-cheek attitude. 224 pages, 5½ x 8½, soft-cover. $10.
BEEN THERE DONE THAT, by Charles O. “Bill” Williams. Another look back on the Twentieth Century by our own Bill Williams. 250

provided columns not only of quantity, but of quality. They were lively, funny, provocative, informative…” You’ll really enjoy reading this
