Page 1 of 7 Changing Metric Units BEFORE Now WHY? You learned metric units for length, mass, and capacity. You’ll change from one metric unit of measure to another. So you can find the height of a sunflower in meters, as in Ex. 27. Changing Units You can change from one unit to another in the Word Watch Review Words meter, p. 56 gram, p. 187 liter, p. 188 metric system by multiplying or dividing by a power of 10. Change to a larger unit by dividing. 1000 10 100 milli- centi- deci 10 1000 base unit (m, g, or L) 100 1000 deka- hecto- kilo 1000 Change to a smaller unit by multiplying. EXAMPLE 1 Changing Units Using Multiplication Change 0.64 L to milliliters. Change to a smaller unit by multiplying. 1 Decide whether to multiply or divide. 2 Select the power of 10. 1000 mL L 0.64 1000 640. ANSWER 0.64 L 640 mL EXAMPLE 2 Changing Units Using Division Change 23.6 g to kilograms. 1 Decide whether to multiply or divide. 2 Select the power of 10. Change to a larger unit by dividing. 1000 g kg 23.6 1000 0.0236 ANSWER 23.6 g 0.0236 kg Your turn now Copy and complete the statement. 1. 230 g _?_ kg 2. 2.5 mL _?_ L Lesson 4.8 3. 0.45 m _?_ cm Changing Metric Units 191 Page 2 of 7 Comparing Measures To compare measures that have different units, change one of them so that both measures have the same units. EXAMPLE with Solving 3 Comparing Measures Which is longer, 170 cm or 1.6 m? You can change either unit to the other. In Example 3, you could have changed 1.6 meters to centimeters instead. Change 170 cm to meters so the units are the same for both measures. 170 cm (170 100) m 100 cm 1 m 1.7 m Then compare the measures. Because 1.7 m > 1.6 m, you know that 170 cm > 1.6 m. ANSWER 170 cm is longer than 1.6 m.
