Myanmar, the rising star
A series of institutional reforms, both on a
political and economic fronts, since the
new government took up office in March
2011 has led to the country’s renewal on
the international stage.
Myanmar’s extensive resources, from wood products to precious
gems to oil and gas deposits to cultural sites lending to the
nascent tourism industry, underscore the country’s potential.
The tremendous progress spearheaded by Myanmar’s new
government led to a flurry of high profile visits by several
prominent global leaders. Numerous international investors
followed suit, rallying behind a vision of hope and ambition for
the country’s economic development.
In November 2012, a fresh Foreign Investment Law, the first
in more than 20 years, was signed by Myanmar’s president Thein
Sein. While regional neighbors including China, South Korea,
India and Thailand have already made strides in the country,
the United States, Japan and the European Union have also
started to allow foreign direct investment. In 2012, the Asian
Development Bank agreed to resume discussions on participating
in the budding development of the local infrastructure and
support industries that will be dearly required to position the
country on the path of sustainable growth.
Myanmar’s hosting of late of prominent events signals the
country means business in terms of infrastructure readiness.
Myanmar has done its utmost to deliver on that promise,
8

as evidenced with a wealth of new hotels opening in the capital
Nay Pyi Taw, one of the world’s fastest growing city. Myanmar held
its first ever summit, the World Economic Forum on East Asia in
June 2013, hosted the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Dec 2013
and has been preparing to chair the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (ASEAN) in 2014.
Pioneering a vertical Myanmar
JSG was already nurturing great ambitions for Myanmar as early as
1999, the year it established Myanmar Jardine Schindler (MJS), in
Did you know?
Myanmar, formerly known as Burma,
gained its independence from the
United Kingdom on January 4, 1948.
Ruled for nearly 50 years by a military

the first elections in 20 years were held
on November 7, 2010. The country is

Yangon. Acting as a pioneer in the country’s elevator and
escalator industry, the company is today widely recognized –
notably thanks to its emphasis on providing top quality customer
services – as the leader in the premium segment, an honor it is
determined to retain. MJS is the only foreign elevator company
operating in Myanmar without the use of agents or distributors, in
order to provide the best quality products, installation and services.
JSG regularly brings in the country new technologies and training,
involving state-of-the-art simulators and global technical experts.
The country has a land area of nearly 680,000 km2 and a population
of 55 million, out of which 33% live in cities. Largest cities are
Yangon (4.3 million), Mandalay and Nay Pyi Daw (1.0 million each).
Nay Pyi Daw has been Myanmar’s capital city since 2005 and has
been described as one of the world’s fastest growing city.
Myanmar’s GDP amounted to USD53 billion in 2012, corresponding
to an annual GDP growth of 6.3%. Key industries include
agriculture and forestry, minerals, construction materials, fertilizers,
oil and natural gas, textile and precious stones.
The special emphasis put on fostering the technical skills of its
local workforce is acutely important in a market growing rapidly
not only in terms of volume but also in sophistication.
MJS has thus been involved in the design, supply, installation and
maintenance of elevators and escalators of many iconic buildings,
such as the Novotel Hotel, Chatrium Hotel, Park Royal, the
National Guest House, Mingalar Mandalay, the Sports Stadiums
and most recently, the Hilton Hotel.
As part of the group’s strategy to further strengthen its presence,
a new office on Parami Road in Yangon was inaugurated in
October 2013. It will act as a hub – with other branches in Nay
Pyi Daw and Mandalay – to meet the demands of the recent
national construction boom and further advance service levels,
by offering a range of modern solutions that are relevant to the
local building industry.
The new office opening was a fresh reminder of JSG’s long-term
commitment to Myanmar, its people and ambitions. As Willis
Phua, General Manager of MJS, put it, “We are excited both to
have been a part of Myanmar’s recent history and to continue
to have a role in the country’s infrastructure and urbanization
development as it continues to realize its enormous potential.”

Celebrating
two decades
of pioneering
innovation
10
Vertical World 2013
Since the advent in 1992 of
the Miconic 10, the world’s
first destination control system,
Schindler has resolutely
kept making strides in the
field of intelligent transit
management, which culminated
with the 3rd generation Personal
Occupant Requirement Terminal
(PORT) technology. Schindler’s
spearheading of this game
changer has met with universal
acclaims from the industry,
with over 6,000 units equipped
with destination control sold
worldwide.
Conceived with a vision for tomorrow’s
buildings, PORT today provides users with
an unparalleled experience.
While technological advances in elevator control
have previously focused on enhancing traffic
efficiency (intelligent systems can now bring forth
efficiency gains of as much as 30 percent) by grouping
passengers and providing the shortest possible trip
for every passenger, the introduction of the Schindler
ID a decade ago made possible the integration of
access control within the elevator system, enabling
passengers to communicate their requirements to the
system.
What an intelligent building needs
Schindler recognized very early on that developers
and architects alike increasingly required cutting edge
technology that could boost transportation efficiency
in a building while offering better user experience
and security.
The latest manifestation of Schindler’s two decades
of pioneering destination control is the third
generation PORT technology. PORT revolutionizes
the way people move through buildings smoothly,
while combining personalized services and enhanced
building security. Beyond its astute ability to optimize
traffic flows, the technology permeates into other
areas of relevance to modern urban life and boasts a
host of powerful communication, customization and
access features. These virtually limitless capabilities,
combined with the aesthetic, sleek appeal of its user
interface, make PORT not only applicable to high
performance office buildings, but also very effectively
so in the luxury residential and hospitality segments
(see next pages).
When integrated at the design stage, the PORT
technology opens up a new world of opportunities
for owners, architects and property managers
to provide users with unprecedented levels of
customization.
An unbeatable track record
PORT has been successfully deployed at some of the
most prominent developments around the world,
including the International Commerce Centre (ICC) in
Hong Kong, the Heron Tower in London, the Deutsche
Bank headquarters in Frankfurt, the Hyatt Regency
Hotel in New Orleans, the Park Ventures in Thailand
and the Integra Tower in Malaysia.
Proven performance Hong Kong ICC, a vertical
“city” within a city
In Hong Kong, the ICC – the city’s tallest building
catering up to 20,000 people daily – was the first
in town to sport the innovative technology. Pau Waikeung, project manager of developer Sun Hung Kai
Properties, commenting on the strengths of PORT’s
transit management system, explained, “The intelligent
vertical transportation system of this mega tower
integrates security with an elevator call control to
facilitate people‘s movements. People with authorized
cards crossing the ground floor entry points will be
detected and grouped to elevator cabins accordingly
to ensure less waiting time and save energy with fewer
stops.”
ICC is equipped with many
of Schindler’s innovative solutions
such as double-deck elevators
with PORT Technology to optimize
building traffic efficiency and
Power Factor One (PF1) inverters
that feed back energy generated
by the elevator to the building’s
power grid.
Vertical World 2013
11
Worthy of note is the attention that has been paid by the
system’s designers to making the PORT technology’s building
access and security features available in a convenient, nonintrusive manner. All is needed is one tap of a passenger’s
pre-programmed access card on the PORT terminal, for the
interface to immediately display a list of destinations to which
access is granted and for the system to allocate an elevator.
A high-tech and sophisticated user experience in
Bangkok Park Ventures
Such benefits were prevalent in the decision made by Park
Ventures, Bangkok’s first and foremost iconic intelligent
ecoplex, which boasts a large green space and a full range
of state-of-the-art facilities, to choose PORT. Thanapol
Sirithanachai, then Managing Director of Univentures Public
Company Limited described, “Park Ventures is an intelligent and
sustainable building which was developed from a philosophy
of balancing the concept of innovative architecture and
providing a comfortable environment for its building tenants.
As such, we require an advanced elevator system which not
only provides our tenants a smooth and convenient transit
experience, but also offers enhanced building security at all
times. After looking at several options, we found that PORT
Technology was the answer.”
12
Vertical World 2013
The PORT technology has made great strides in the area of
energy savings. When activated, the Energy Control Option
(ECO) mode sets several elevators in the group into energy
saving standby or sleep-mode during non-peak hours. This
helps to avoid having all elevators making many trips to
transport only a few passengers.
PORT Technology for Zuellig Building in
the Philippines
Zuellig Building is the first high-rise building in the Philippines
that achieved certification from the U.S. Green Building
Council (USGBC) at the LEED Platinum level for Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design.
The Zuellig Building was conceptualized to be a green
building both in design and function. Many of the building’s
features, from the all-glass façade, gardens and water
system, were specifically designed to prevent unnecessary
power consumption and conserve needed resources. The
incorporation of the PORT Technology in its elevator system
complements this green vision via its transit management and
energy saving features.

Smart Residential and Hotels
As the new millennium ushered in a faster paced lifestyle and the new generation
has grown up in a world reshaped by information technologies, expectations
are transforming the way residences and hotels are designed. Many recent surveys
have confirmed modern apartment dwellers and hotel guests increasingly demand a
highly personalized experience, combined with unprecedented levels of convenience
and safety.
This has sparked developers to seek and offer their tenants the latest innovations
available in order to keep an edge over competitors. In the hospitality industry,
providing a first-hand experience of cutting-edge technologies has become just as
important as a hotel’s design and quality of customer service and such experience
now meaningfully contributes to the hotel’s overall image. The aspirations of luxury
residences’ tenants are similar with those of hotel guests, with both aspiring to a
tailor-made experience.
This recent shift in paradigm makes the balancing act between excellent security
and convenience all the more crucial. While in a luxury residential property or hotel,
security is paramount, the most desirable system must be designed to ensure safety
without being excessively restrictive or inconvenient. In essence, the best security
must be there but barely perceptible.
Vertical World 2013

Taipei to showcase the
PORT Technology.
Exclusive Personalized Service
Elevator access is a vital part of a cohesive building
security architecture. The PORT Technology helps
curb unauthorized access to a building and offer truly
exclusive mobility, while providing a smooth and
contemporary experience. The holistic approach meets
the most exacting needs of both the luxury residential
and hospitality segments.
PORT can be customized at length to contribute to a
property’s personalized experience by addressing
in real time the most specific needs of each tenant,
including special mobility requirements such as
dedicated elevators for VIP access etc.
Seamless One-Card Access
PORT was designed to form an integral part of the
property’s security apparatus, addressing both safety
and privacy concerns. PORT can indeed be described
as the first line of defense since elevator calls take
place outside the elevator cars.
Once residents or guests swipe their key card (or, at a
hotel, a Seamless One Card room key pre-programmed
on check-in) at the PORT terminal, the system verifies
14
Vertical World 2013
their admission rights and assigns an elevator to take
them to their floor in the most efficient manner, with no
further action required.
Lobby design flexibility
PORT terminals can be mounted freely around the
elevator lobby, thus allowing a variety of layouts. With
no need for a card reader inside the elevator, situations
where passengers rush to slot in their key card and
press their destination can be avoided. The system can
also be programmed to display general floors to public
visitors (such as a conference participants), while
private floors are only visible to hotel in-house guests.
Viglacera residential complex in
Hanoi is built with the concept
of green and smart building:
energy saving, environmentfriendly, intelligent apartments

including the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans, Yuan Lih
in Taipei and Viglacera Tower in Hanoi.
Embracing stylish design
A touch of elegance, the system’s face to passengers
is its sleek, colorful touch-screen terminal, available
in wall or pedestal-mounted versions. PORT’s futuristic
design befits the most sophisticated standards of
architecture and design and adds to a building’s overall
contemporary and refined ambience. PORT terminals
can efficiently display communication from the building
management to tenants, or in the event of emergency,
broadcast a clear message to passengers.
This convergence of the finest advances in security,
customization and design made PORT the partner of
choice for the revitalized Hyatt Regency in New
Orleans, which chose to offer its guests the latest in
technology when it reopened its doors in 2011.
The first hotel in the United States to install PORT
Technology to enhance user experience and building

traveling throughout its 32 floors every day.
The technology was deemed to exemplify the hotel’s
commitment to deliver a first class experience and
praised for its efficiency and attention paid to guest
experience by recognizing and responding to their
individual needs.
The access and personalization features PORT is
predicated on has already made it a highly successful
technology in prestigious residential and hotel buildings
PORT Technology provides tenants a new and enhanced transit experience. This modern,
state-of-the-art technology offers seamless building access, excellent user-communication,
enhanced security and energy-saving features:
Enhanced building security
PORT can be integrated with any design of barrier, such as turnstiles, to further enhance building security.
Anti-pass back
PORT ensures that once a card has been used to gain entry to the building, it can no longer perform
this task (entry) until it has been used to exit the building.
Personalized service
Different people have different needs. By always knowing the exact requirements of a user, whether it is more walking time, longer door opening time, more space or any others, PORT Technology helps ensure the journey is customized to meet their needs.
Energy Control Option (ECO) Mode
When activated, the Energy Control Option (ECO) mode sets several elevators in the group into energy saving standby or sleep-mode during non-peak hours. This helps to avoid having all elevators making many trips to transport only a few passengers.

Of all the major themes of modern architecture, the
optimization of space usage, energy efficiency and lastly,
elegant, functional and sleek design have globally taken
precedence over the last decade. While once viewed as
pulling a building concept towards opposite directions,
these ideals can now be regarded as the various facets of
the same driving force behind the creation of tomorrow’s
landmarks, a new paradigm that several pioneering
technological advances have not only made possible but
perceptible.
Acclaimed by the industry
The Schindler 5500 was unveiled at industry events starting
in May 2013 in Europe including United Kingdom, France,
Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland,
Vietnam and Indonesia, where it received unanimously
strong responses from key market participants.
While the Schindler 5500 was only officially introduced
in Asia a few months ago, it has already been installed
in several key projects around the region, including
The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and the
Warrenwoods in Hong Kong (featured on following pages).
The Schindler 5500 was designed to meet the needs of
architects, builders and developers alike, by bringing
together the best of Schindler’s engineering, with no less
ambition than setting the trend for the next generation
of elevators. The new elevator epitomizes the quest of a
holistic solution to the challenges presented by modern
cities and buildings and the most creative and elaborate
architectural designs.
The Schindler 5500 combines state-of-the-art engineering
and top tier performance levels, a single modular system
adaptable to a wide variety of applications, energy efficient
technologies and materials as well as a lavish range of

Suspension Traction Media (STM) Technology
Vincom Centre A in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, equipped with
12 Schindler 5500 elevators, features a shopping mall, a deluxe
5 star hotel, underground parking facilities and a recreational area,
making the center the perfect place for leisure.
Riding on the success of
Suspension Traction Media (STM)
Among all features boasted by the Schindler
5500, perhaps the one technology that
best exemplifies the convergence of various
priorities in modern buildings is Schindler’s
proprietary Suspension Traction Media
(STM) technology.
The STM was first introduced in 2008 with
the Schindler 3300 AP, with resounding
success. This innovative solution eliminates
much of the limitation of conventional steel
ropes and enhances shaft utilization and
energy savings.
A system architecture based on the STM
allows for a traction sheave 72% smaller
than in conventional steel rope elevators
and for a more compact and energyefficient motor. Less valuable building
space is required while passengers are
treated with an exceptionally fast and
smooth ride experience.
Space configurability
The Schindler 5500’s modular system and scalable car sizes
allow customization to various shaft dimensions. The flexible
car dimensions and door options cover various applications
from apartments and offices, to hotels, hospitals and shopping
centers, as well as stations, airports and stadiums.
The elevator offers both mini-machine-room (MMR) and
machine-room-less (MRL) options with the capability to install
the controller on different levels. The Schindler 5500 boasts
the best shaft space utilization rate in the industry – in excess
of 60%. This achievement is made possible through the use
of STM technology, which enables the compact drive to be
installed directly in the elevator shaft.

Green mobility
The Schindler 5500 saves energy consumption by up to 30%
as compared to its predecessor, thanks to the clean Power
Factor One (PF1) regenerative drive technology and a permanent
magnet motor, that reduces heat dissipation during transmission
and eliminates the need for additional ventilation.
The Schindler 5500 has achieved a class A energy rating, the
highest rating under VDI 4707, an elevator energy efficiency
classification guideline issued by the Association of German
Engineers. The resolutely green elevator features an enhanced
standby mode, durable LED lighting, environmentally friendly
materials and a light weight gearless motor with no oil or
lubricant needed.
PORT technology – high-level performance
The Schindler 5500’s use of advanced control systems makes
it an ideal solution for heavy traffic environments. When
powered by Schindler’s PORT technology, the Schindler 5500
elevates a building to a whole new level of traffic performance,
security and user experience accessible through a sophisticated
touch-screen interface befitting luxury offices, hotels and
residential buildings.
Freedom of design
The Italian designed elevator interior comes in four decoration
lines and an inclusive choice of materials, colors, lighting
and fixtures facilitate integration with a building’s unique
architectural concept.
The sleek full-height, glass touch sensitive panels lend the
elevator a cool modernity and tactile appeal.
The bare car option can give over 50% of the rated passenger
load to interior decoration features, from glass doors and wall
panels, modern ambience ceiling with integrated LED lighting,
to back painted glass and digital printed glass walls with

Getting green has indeed become the latest priority and
certainly not the last, of today’s urban planners. Sky
gardens, a concept originated in Europe, are an exciting
new trend in Asia. Many countries in the region have
taken stock of their many merits and some, such as
Singapore, have already set ambitious goals to expand
their presence in densely populated cities.
Besides aesthetic, recreational and environmental
benefits, sky gardens contribute to the development of
more efficient buildings and cities. Vegetation reduces
absorption of solar radiation and can cut ambient
temperatures by several degrees. It has already been
established such additional foliage could thus provide
modern Asian cities with significant savings by trimming
energy consumption. Not only useful in fighting heat
stress and smog, green rooftops are also ideal to keep rain
runoff in check.
Schindler’s research and development teams as well as
Jardine Schindler’s teams in the region have followed and
fully caught on this captivating trend with due interest.
Over the last 10 years they have conceived ground-breaking
technologies and products that share with sky gardens
this unique and celebrated convergence of aesthetics,
purpose of design and environmental considerations as
well as a focus on energy efficiency.
Environmental considerations have indeed gained higher and
higher importance within the building industry in Asia, as
seen from soaring demand for energy-saving materials and
solutions as well as stringent Green Building certifications.
With today’s universal recognition of the multiple roles sky
gardens can play in tomorrow’s smart cities, Jardine Schindler
is confident that the technology will further consolidate its
status as an industry standard for low to mid-rise buildings in
Asia.

Schindler 3300AP MRL elevator that serves the rooftop garden.
The innovative Machine Room-less (MRL)
solution that embraces and resonates with
the concept of sky garden facilities
A fitting illustration of Schindler’s determination to
innovate on multiple fronts was introducing its Machine
Room-Less (MRL) elevator more than a decade ago. The
MRL technology was made possible by the introduction
of ACVF gearless machines, which are typically smaller in
size and themselves more energy-efficient, as compared
to traditional geared elevator. The smaller motor could
be mounted within the elevator shaft itself, eliminating the
need to construct a machine room on the top floor.
Acceptance of the MRL technology was slow when it was
first introduced to Southeast Asia, as most buildings were
still designed to accommodate the specifications of a
machine room elevator. The use of MRL elevators across
the region has since then seen unprecedented growth,
particularly over the last 6 years. This acceptance has
been reflected in various international or national codes,
where MRL elevators are now referenced in. An example is
EN81-1:1998+A2:2004 (specifying requirements for MRL),
which began in 2000 and was finally published in 2004.
The roof garden in Orchard Central Singapore offers stunning views of the
Orchard area and the Central Business District, making it one of the best rooftop
garden for its visitors.
“Without a machine room, there is
no doubt that MRL elevators are
sustainable by nature”
Sustainable by nature
Most of the praise for the MRL technology went to its
space-saving configuration, which not only allows for a fuller
use of the rooftop space such as lush gardens, but also cuts
down into building materials and construction time. The
technology could thus be aptly described as developers and
the environment’s best friend within the elevator industry.

Leading a building’s revitalization to
a green and efficient future
Hong Kong, famed for its breathtaking skyline, presents
the highest concentration of skyscrapers in the world. The
city went through a building boom in the 1980s, when
many of today’s most famous landmarks were erected.
A second boom followed from the late 1990s, leading to
the construction of many more high rise buildings.
In a city with such a long and rich building history, the
original elevators installed in many of its landmarks have
remained in operation for several decades. In order to
stay competitive in a modern metropolis more than ever
conscious of operating efficiency, sophistication and
environmental considerations, a new trend has emerged
leading to the revitalization of older buildings through
the modernization of their facilities, including elevator
systems.
As elevator technologies have significantly advanced over
the past decades, such initiatives are designed to bring
significant, tangible benefits to building owners and
tenants. Besides enhanced reliability and comfort, the
introduction of more efficient drives, controllers, machines
and smart user interfaces hold promises of material cost
and energy savings and a noticeable boost of a building’s
overall image and outlook.
A case in point, the 33-storey Great Eagle Centre and
Harbour Centre buildings in Wanchai have formed a
familiar sight amidst the Victoria Harbour skyline since
their completion in 1983. With a view to bring the two
towers’ elevator systems up to modern standards in terms
of passengers’ experience and energy efficiency, Schindler
was brought in to modernize a total of 28 elevators.
The original elevators, equipped with previous generation
Aconic controllers and motor generator sets, will be fitted
with Schindler’s highly efficient Power Factor One (PF1)
inverters, which allow energy regenerated by the elevators
to be fed back to the system or to the building’s electricity
grid. The PF1 technology potentially leads to 35% of
savings in energy consumption.
Schindler’s PORT Technology delivers exceptional outcomes in traffic and energy
efficiencies with sleek human interfaces and enhanced building security.
Traffic performance will also be brought to new heights
thanks to the application of the PORT technology, cutting
into waiting times and offering a wealth of energy saving
and security features, that were out of reach with previous
generation controls. Most noticeable to the buildings’
tenants will be a far smoother ride and their refreshing
interaction with the sleek touch screen interface. Building
managers too will find further value and convenience
in Schindler’s Lobby Vision, a management tool allowing
single-point supervision of the entire elevator system.
This modernization exercise will be conducted with
minimal disturbance, by upgrading elevators one at a time
over an average period of 12 weeks, while the overall
elevator system operation remains unaffected.

The Service that Never
Photo of the Paris Las Vegas
From the opening up of the local gaming industry in 2001
until 2013, revenues from Macau’s 35 casinos have
skyrocketed, rising by 13.5% in 2012 to a record US$38
billion, as the Asian gambling hub reinforced its position as
the world’s biggest gambling market – with Las Vegas and
Singapore following with US$6 billion each.
The tide is still rising. In the ten months to October 2013,
Macau already earned US$37 billion, with October 2013 the
busiest month on record at US$4.6 billion. Over the last 10
years, Macau’s annual growth has averaged close to 13%,
fueled by a gaming industry that now accounts for 50% of
the GDP.
Casino operators today see the lack of hotel rooms as the
key factor reining on further revenue growth. Eight
additional resorts combining casinos, hotels and full-fledged
facilities, are thus under development. Over the last 12
months, major players including MGM, SJM, Sands and
24
Vertical World 2013
Wynn have won approval to develop new multibillion resorts on
the Cotai Strip that will be completed by 2015.
Elsewhere in Asia, casino operators are carefully watching for new
growth engines. In view of the success met not only by Macau,
but also by Singapore, a number of Asian countries, such as
Japan, Korea, Taiwan or Vietnam, are now considering legalizing
gambling or granting access to the local population in order to
boost tourism and income.
Partners in performance
“Jardine Schindler has played an important role throughout the
brisk development of Macau, not only by procuring best-in-class
elevators and escalators, but also quite importantly by acting as a
highly reliable operator and partner ready to take on and manage
a sizeable, high-demand, maintenance portfolio built over a short
period of time”, says Tobias B. Staehelin, General Manager of
Jardine Schindler Lifts Macao. “This has been particularly true in
the casino segment, with projects including the Venetian, the Four
Sleeps
After 10 years of unprecedented growth, Macau still
has room for yet wilder dreams. Jardine Schindler
has accompanied the gaming boom and upped the
ante on service reliability.
Schindler has recently been awarded the Parisian Macau
project, which consists of three major portions; a podium,
a hotel tower and a 46-storey replica of the Eiffel Tower,
roughly half the size of the 1,050-foot-tall original in
Paris. Schindler will install a total of 85 elevators and 46
escalators in the Parisian, including 2 outdoor elevators
that will serve the “Eiffel Tower”.
Seasons, Grand Lisboa, the City of Dreams, the Studio City and
most recently the Parisian.”
Indeed, the requirements of expansive gaming resorts are
unusual. Servicing an integrated casino resort requires the
highest possible level of professionalism, technical skills and
vigilance.
In such a high traffic environment, accessible to the public
24 hours a day, 365 days a year, any noticeable downtime is
out of question. Response time has to be negligible and
preventive maintenance is regularly conducted by teams of
technicians armed with the best training and systems and the
expertise required to service the most sophisticated equipment
installed in these facilities.
The mission of Jardine Schindler has always been to ensure
passengers barely notice the infrastructure transporting them.
To further reduce the possibility of any disruption, state-of-the-
art software and systems, such as Schindler’s Lobby Vision
monitoring technology, are used to constantly watch over
equipment and enable predictive intervention or maintenance.
Precise procedures are followed to adhere to the strictest safety
standards in the industry, share information among teams,
prevent issues from occurring at more than one location, and
quite importantly in the entertainment industry, maintain
efficient communications and coordination with casino resort
operators.
“We believe we earned the trust of our clients in an exacting
industry during this transforming era for Macau, thanks to our
continued dedication to excellence in the area of preventive
maintenance as well as our focus on smooth and safe
operations. Without a doubt, this experience will be leveraged
to help our clients pursue their next vision in Macau and
elsewhere in Asia”, says David Chen, Chairman of Jardine
Schindler Lifts Macao.

The Venetian Macao
Did you know?
Following the successes of Macau, Singapore and
more recently, the Philippines, casino operators
are today turning their attention to several highpotential Asian countries that are expected to legalize
or further liberalize the local gaming industry.
In October 2013, Japanese lawmakers outlined a
policy paving the way for the legalization of casinos
ahead of the 2020 Olympics. In Korea and despite
lobbying, casinos with only one exception have been
until now only open to foreigners and the industry
has so far seen little foreign investment. The Taiwanese
government is now considering licensing casinos near
Taoyuan Airport instead of restricting gaming avenues
to outlying islands. In August 2013, Vietnam initiated
lifted on a trial basis a ban restricting locals from
entering casinos.
