Money, Money, Money! Parents, We’re starting our next math unit on money. We will spend about 3 weeks on this unit. Below are the standards that will be covered during this unit as well as the essential knowledge that your child should have by the end of this unit. The back of this letter includes vocabulary that will be included in this unit. Please work on and reinforce these skills at home. You can also use the vocabulary sheet as a reference when helping your child with homework. SOLs covered during this unit: o Measurement: 1.7a: Identify the number of pennies equivalent to a nickel, a dime, and a quarter o Measurement: 1.7b: Determine the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, and dimes whose total value is 100 cents or less. o Number and Number Sense: 1.2 The student will count forward by ones, two, fives, and tens to 100 and backwards by ones from 30 Essential Understanding (By the end of this unit your child should be able to): o Recognize penny, nickel, dime, quarter and dollar. o Identify the value of a penny, nickel, dime, quarter and dollar. o Identify strategies to use to determine the value of a collection of coins that total 100 cents or less. o Identify how you can exchange a group of the same coins for an equivalent coin. From the menus on the left hand side of my homepage you will see ‘Money Websites.’ From there you will find amazing sites that can give your child practice with the skill and concepts that we’ll be learning related to place value.
