Established in 2012 as a platform for South Africa’s burgeoning
electronic music culture. The Cape Town Electronic Music Festival
has gained international recognition for being one of the most
relevant and forward-thinking events on Africa’s music festival

program.
IFAS, together with CTEMF, invites Pierre-Marie Oullion, artistic director of the Nuits
Sonores festival (France) to take part in the CTEMF 6th edition workshops program.
These electronic music industry sessions are a vital part of the festival’s ethos and are held

2-3 March | Wits Theatre | Johannesburg
The French Institute of South Africa and the Dance Umbrella
festival are partnering to bring the Floating Outfit Project to the

(Madagascar), Desiré Davids (South Africa) and Edna Jaime (Mozambique).
The three artists share, search, explore and exchange their realities together in order to
give voice to various commonalities, challenges and images. The work seeks to question
the image, the value attributed and the objectification of women by challenging
sometimes highlighting preconceived ideas of what a woman is, or should be. It is a
commentary on current issues facing women on the African continent.

L’ATELIER GERARD SEKOTO AWARD WINNER 2016
Matete Motubatse: Residency
May - July 2017 (TBC) | Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris
The winner of the 2016 L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award will go to
Paris in May for his three months’ residency at the Cité
Internationale des Arts in Paris.
In Motubatse’s award-winning video “Moya”, his character
attempts to blow a physical obstacle – a black plastic bag – off his head simply by using his
breath. The word ‘breath’ in Sepedi translates to ‘Moya’ which, in turn, can either mean
‘breath’, ‘air’, ‘spirit’ and/or ‘soul’ – all non-physical forms. The short film symbolises
“ntwa ya moya”; that is, an intense celestial battle of non-physical forces.
On his return from France, he will be given an opportunity to exhibit his work first at the
Absa Art & Museum and then have a national tour through the Alliance Française network
in 2018.

Soro et Le Grain de Maïs Magique is a story from a book written by Véronique Tadjo. It

when he leaves it on a stone, a bird steals it away. Soro runs everywhere to catch up with
the bird and in his journey to find the grain, he meets many friendly animals and people
along the way and he cannot stop for long because he must find his lucky grain of corn.

EXPERIMENTING / EXPERIENCING THE CITY
EXPÉRIENCES URBAINES EN AFRIQUE DU SUD ET AILLEURS
Through three crossed perspectives, this event grasps the risk and
the interest of a multidisciplinary approach to talk about the city.
The aim is to open the debate around the notions of "city" and
"urban" in the complex relationship that unites them, to study the
links between integration, exclusion, citizenship in an era of
globalization, cultures and urban identities. How to highlight the stakes of space justice if
we do not talk about the use of public space and vice versa? How can we treat the middle
classes without speaking of spatial inequalities and wonder about the closures of public
spaces? Mutual enrichment is obviously a starting point for this meeting and will bring the
debate to the diverse questions of a large number of people gathered by a common
interest. The sharing of experiences and urban experiences will be a necessary reference
to account for the complexity of the changes and dynamics that the city is experiencing
today.

“ET SI…” BY MARCEL GBEFFA - JOMBA FESTIVAL 2017
August - September | Durban (TBC)
The Multicorps company will present their solo piece “Et si…” by
Marcel Gbeffa at the Jomba Festival 2017.
“Et si…” was created in 2008. The piece moves away from social
issues to focus on the individual, the "I" in a universe where laws
and principles reside, and where the eyes of others matter very
much. "Et si ..." starts from the observation of animal movements - sometimes so close to
the man. The choreographer uses a repetition of movements of an animal then adapts it
to the body before transforming it into a reflex involuntary and spontaneous. It questions
our behaviour, our ways to act or act at times when we are no longer masters of ourselves.
"Et si ..." observes and exposes what constitutes our tics.
Presented in collaboration with the Alliance Française of Durban and Jomba festival.

TORDRE
November - December | venues (TBC)
TORDRE is a duet, a diptych of two intimate and modest portraits.
This sets up the titular twist as we embark upon another, more
intimate and more fragile, body story.
This is the story of two performers who have been closely involved
with Rachid Ouramdane’s work for a number of years. It is the
story of the Lithuanian dancer Lora Juodkaite who, spinning dizzyingly on the spot, has
developed her own way of moving which has supported and comforted her ever since she
was a child.
It is also the story of the British dancer Annie Hanauer, moving with an articulated
prosthetic arm which is at the same time both an extension and an integral part of her
body.
