We have finished reading “The Hatchet”, by Gary Paulson, and now it is time for
us to display our knowledge! Choose one of the following projects to complete
our novel study.
1. Create an illustrated calendar showing important
days in Brian’s life during the 54 days he was
stranded. Be specific in logging the events from
the day of take-off to the day of rescue.
2. Research the Cessna 406, the plane Brian flew in
to visit his dad in Northern Canada. Write a
paragraph explaining your findings and create a model of the
plane using materials of your choice.
3. Write a best-selling survival guide written from the viewpoint of
Brian to help prepare others to survive in the woods. Your
survival guide should include 10 survival tips with a written
explanation for each. Publish your survival guide into a book
with a front cover and table of contents.
4. Create an illustrated time line showing ten significant events
from Brian’s 54 days in the Canadian wilderness.
5. Create a life-sized model or poster of Brian and dress him as
described in the book. Include 10 character or personality
traits about him that describe him and tell of his roles in the
book.
