Insights November/December 2013 • Volume 11 Issue 6 Letter From The CEO Dear Valued Delta Community Member, Thanks to your continued business and the dedicated efforts of our employees serving your financial needs, we’ve had another outstanding year. We’re also finishing 2013 with strong financial results due in large part to the success of our SWITCH & SAVE campaign, which ran from mid-July through the end of September. During the campaign, many of our members benefited greatly by refinancing high-interest loans held at other financial institutions with us instead. The campaign attracted new members, too, strengthening the Credit Union. The SWITCH & SAVE campaign generated record loan growth for Delta Community, with over $64 million in new Auto, Personal and Visa® Credit Card loans. I’m delighted to share these results with you, not just for their numeric value alone, but because each loan we open gives us the opportunity to help valued members like you save more of their hard-earned money. This is a priority for us, and I’m sure it’s important to you as well – especially as we approach the holiday shopping season. Know that your Credit Union is sensitive to the need to always help you get the most out of your finances, regardless of the time of year. While the SWITCH & SAVE campaign has ended, the theme of the campaign continues, that is finding out if you, too, can benefit by having more of our financial products and services. I encourage you to find out if we can reduce the interest rate and monthly payment on loans you may have with another financial institution. We welcome that conversation. And remember that you and your family can also benefit from having access to our full suite of products built around your changing financial needs, like Quarterlife, our financial program for young adults, as well as insurance, retirement planning and investments, home loans and more. As a member of Delta Community, I also hope you’ve come to recognize and appreciate our on going commitment to provide you with a superior service experience. One of the ways we do this is by offering you better value and honest advice. Our success as a financial institution is built upon the bedrock of trust, earned over time, by providing members with good counsel and honest advice on what’s best for them and not necessarily the Credit Union. Advocating your best interests sets us apart from other financial institutions, and this is something you can always rely on us to do as your financial partner. I hope you encourage your eligible family and friends to consider Delta Community as a financial partner. I know the gift of membership is something that will benefit them for a lifetime. And as your family and friends become more familiar with the real value available to them as members of Delta Community, I’m sure they’ll be appreciative of your consideration to help them save more money or improve their financial lives. As we close 2013, I want to personally thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve your financial needs throughout the year. We know there are many competing voices in the financial services marketplace today, so your support, loyalty and membership in Delta Community Credit Union are most appreciated. Page 3 Maximize Your Purchases With A Delta Community Visa® Credit Card There are hundreds of credit cards to choose from today. Choosing the right one is not only important when trying to build and establish credit, it’s also essential in making sure you have the right payment tool that fits both your lifestyle and purchasing needs. Here are some important things you should consider when picking a credit card for your everyday – or holiday purchases: Spending Habits – Think about how you’re going use your credit card. Are you going to use it for everyday purchases or just big-ticket items? Also, will you pay the balance off each month? Grace Period – The grace period is the amount of time you have to pay your balance in full before a finance charge is added. The period is usually expressed in days from the billing date. Longer grace periods are better because they give you more time to pay your bill without incurring a cost for the convenience of using credit. Annual Percentage Rate – The annual percentage rate, or APR, is the percentage applied to balances that you carry beyond the grace period. The higher the APR, the higher your finance charge will be when you have a revolving balance and the more you’ll pay for using your credit card. Most credit cards have a different APR for purchases, balance transfers and cash advances. Make sure you know the APR for each. Fees – Know the type of fees a credit card issuer may charge. Common assessments are annual fees, charges for late payments, balance transfers, cash advances and sometimes, payment by phone. Rewards – Rewards are a great benefit, but look for incentive programs that offer flexibility, such as multiple rewards versus just one type such as cash back or travel. Also, keep in mind the restrictions, ease of redeeming and point value. It’s important to understand the math behind how much you have to spend to earn a point, cash back or air mile. The Delta Community Visa Platinum Rewards and Young Adult Credit Cards have no annual fee, rates as low as 9.75% variable APR* and a free rewards program that offers a variety of redemption options such as Cash Back, Travel with no blackout dates, Last day to request Gift Cards and Merchandise. Learn more about our Visa Credit Card suite of Gift Cards from your products and apply today by visiting us at www.deltacommunitycu.com/visa. *APR = Annual Percentage Rate. Fees may apply, including $3 cash advance fee and up to 1% foreign transaction fee on consumer Visa card accounts. Reward Points for delivery by Christmas is December 15! Page 4 Protect Your Identity This Holiday Season You can never be too safe when it comes to protecting your personal information. Delta Community Credit Union can help you minimize risk with Identity Theft Protection from Members Insurance Advisors, our wholly owned subsidiary – especially during the holidays. As we use our check cards, credit cards and checks to make holiday purchases, we open up the opportunity for identity thieves to steal personal information. This could not only be costly, but it can ruin your credit as well. Fortunately, whether you’re shopping online or at the local mall, there are many ways you can protect yourself. Here are some suggestions to help you protect your identity. Online Shopping Shopping in Stores or Malls • Keep your computer software and antivirus programs updated. • Be aware of your surroundings at all times and carry your purse/wallet securely. • Only use secure websites with “https” rather than “http” in the URL. • Copy the front and back of each of your credit and debit cards and keep it in a secure location. • Choose strong passwords with numbers, letters and symbols. • Be cautious when opening messages from unknown sources. • Do not carry your Social Security card in your wallet. • Block unapproved access to your credit files with the credit bureaus. • Check your credit card and/or bank statements carefully. • Avoid using public “WiFi” with online banking or web email. Get Rewarded. If you’re going to stand in long lines for purchases, spend extra gas money driving from store to store or stay online for hours to find the best deals, get rewarded for it. Overall, it’s a win-win situation; a pretty sweet deal, if you ask me. Research the Best Online Deals Before Buying. Shopping online is not only convenient but it can save you tremendously. Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving, is where retailers unleash some of the best online deals of the latest fashions, gadgets and products. Try using your talent or arts and crafts ideas to make some of your gifts instead of buying them. Fortunately for us, we live in the era of YouTube. You can a find a “how to” video on almost anything. If you can sew, make your loved one a hand-crafted sweater. If you’re a hairstylist, give a friend a voucher for a new look. Own a business? He’s special because he just turned 97 years old … and Delta Community Credit Union is his preferred financial institution! Employees at the branch look forward to his visits – and the energy he brings along. Mr. Eli Sobat joined Delta Community earlier this year. He now visits the Dallas Metro branch with his daughter Sandy on a regular basis. Our relationship with Mr. Sobat began as a matter of convenience, with him visiting the branch to do Service Center transactions. He was treated so kindly that eventually he decided to open an account with the Credit Union. Mr. Sobat in his Delta Community cap, pictured with (L-R) Amy Halcomb, Lucretia Wallace, Eleanor Snow and Alicia Debord from our Southlake, Texas branch. “Mr. Sobat is the sweetest man, and we all love him,” Southlake Branch Manager Eleanor Snow said. “He’s remarkable for his age, and he truly brightens our day whenever he comes in.” On a recent visit to the branch, Eleanor and the Dallas Metro team gave Mr. Sobat a new Delta Community golf hat for his 97th birthday. He was thrilled with the gift and very appreciative of the gesture. He always wears a hat whenever he’s out, so our gift was a perfect fit. Amazingly, he still goes to the driving range to hit golf balls – now in his Delta Community Credit Union cap! Mr. Sobat’s experience is a great example of how superior service is making a difference with our members and strengthening the Credit Union, not just in Atlanta, but in places like Dallas, Texas, too.
