Courses Using the VSS Fixed Marks – 6/1/2017 Communications of VHF Channel 69 See the next page for the layout of the VSS marks On June 1, 2017 Norm Sooy, Steve Broadstock and I moved Mark “F” to the approximate original position of the missing “B” in attempt to begin restoring the “nested equilateral triangle” set-up. We also adjusted the position of “C”. This produced a triangular 5 NM course very much like the Green Flash course we used prior to 2017. The start/finish line will be between VSS mark “A3” and a nearby drop mark or an orange flag on a committee boat. Cross the start line from the non-course side towards the first mark and cross the finish line from the direction of the last mark towards the non-course side. If “A3” is a turning mark of the course it should be left to the same side as the other VSS marks—the drop mark only plays a role for starting and finishing. US Sailing prescribes that, if a finishing mark is missing but another one remains in place, the finishing line is a line through the remaining mark at a 90 o angle to the last leg and of the shortest practicable length. If the race committee is absent when a boat finishes, she should report to the race committee her finishing time and her position in relation to nearby boats at the first reasonable opportunity. Marks to Port (sail counterclockwise) Marks to Starboard Courses Start and Finish at “A3” and a nearby unnamed mark (a Race Committee Boat, a blowup buoy, a mermaid, or possibly an imaginary mark). We can also use a larger triangle including “A”, “D” and “E”, but I hope to make more corrections soon. That course will (I hope) be used for upcoming “Holiday” races.
