The Effects of Korean Dramas on the Students
I. Introduction
I.1. Background
According to CommonWealth Magazine, one of the greatest inventions in
the 20 century is television, and its appearance in every family has changed our
traditional way of life since decades ago. The sight of a family surrounding around a
table and eating dinner is less and less seen. Instead, we eat dinner and watch dramas
in front of our TV sets at the same time. This style has been showing up in our
everyday life. Along with the large network of cable television, TV stations introduce
many foreign programs, including the dramas from Korea, Japan and America, among
th
which Korean dramas are one of the most popular programs in Taiwan, even in Asia.
We call this trend “Korean Wave”.
Korean Wave is a phenomenon which refers to a worldwide popularity
boom in Korean cultural exports. Korean Wave stands for Korean dramas and movies,
combined with a mixture of K-pop music and dance, clothing, foods, customs,
sightseeing, cosmetics and Korean language. Without a doubt, Korean Wave has
formed an immense fashionable power in the world.
According to The AJU Business (2012), everyone knows that Korean Wave
consists of various elements, and the impact of Korean dramas is the most obvious.
There are two dramas playing significant roles in the history of Korean dramas. One
is Jewel in the Palace. According to Wikipedia, this drama made the record of average
ratings of fifty percent; moreover, there were more than ninety countries in the world
airing this drama. The other is You Who Came From the Stars, and this drama not
only created the clicks of two billion on the Net, but also drew over six hundred forty
thousand Taiwanese tourists to go to Korea in 2014, according to Cheng Yi Shou (鄭
益守), President of Korea Tourism Organization, Taipei Office.
Therefore, we can know that Korean dramas are closely related to our life,
whether their clothing, foods or cultures.
I.2. Motivation
Over the past several years, Korean dramas have become a synonym for the
Korean cultural industry as well as a major source of momentum for the Korean
economy. Similarly, this whirlwind has also swept throughout Taiwan, and the

commodities appearing in the dramas usually cause the large-scale fanatic purchase.
On the other hand, we find that after Korean dramas are introduced into Taiwan, they
deeply affect many aspects in Taiwan such as cultures, foods, clothing, values of life,
traveling, dramas, songs, etc. From the above-mentioned, we can see that Korean
dramas are not only the programs, but also the impacts on our life. With this in mind
and as fans of Korean dramas, our project is to find out the effects of Korean dramas
on the students in National Douliou Vocational High School of Home Economics &
Commerce (TLHC).

The Effects of Korean Dramas on the Students
IV. Conclusion
In our survey, most students in National Douliou Vocational High School of
Home Economics &Commerce have watched Korean dramas. There are two main
effects of Korean dramas on the students. One is the students’ academic performances.
The other is what the students do and buy after they watch Korean dramas.
As the research illustrates, most students don’t stay up watching Korean
dramas. Therefore, we can learn that Korean dramas don’t pose a negative effect on
students. On the other hand, after watching Korean dramas, most teenagers become
Korean maniacs and actively participate in many activities, but they aren’t willing to
spend their money buying products related to Korean dramas. From our survey we
can conclude that Korean dramas are exactly popular with the students in our school,
but watching Korean dramas doesn’t bring them negative effects, no matter on their
schoolwork or in their everyday lives.
