Tim Garling Director Broward County Transit Timothy S. “Tim” Garling has been the director of Broward County Transit, an agency of the Broward County Commission, since 2010. Garling is responsible for the agency’s day-to-day operational and administrative management, which consists of a fleet of 320 buses, an operating budget of $132 million, and a workforce of nearly 1,000 employees. His responsibilities include operational, planning and capital improvements, marketing, compliance and administration, technology, and maintenance sections. During his tenure, several successful programs were implemented, including new Express Bus Service from southwest Broward to downtown Miami-Dade for business commuters, improved bus operator training programs and an advanced technology system for the agency’s Paratransit service to improve trip scheduling for its customers, and the addition of environmentally-friendly hybrid/diesel buses. In 2013, BCT was recognized by the Florida Public Transportation Association as the ‘Outstanding Public Transportation System of the Year’ based on the above and other BCT projects. Garling has close to thirty years of experience in the transportation industry and a wealth of bus and rail operations experience. Before coming to BCT, he served as Executive Director of the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) in St. Petersburg, FL, responsible for directing the activities of the Transit Authority that served 24 municipalities in Pinellas County. Garling implemented the agency’s Productivity Improvement Program (PIP) to involve employees in the development of efficient and cost-saving operational measures. He is also credited with initiating state, regional and local transportation partnerships to conduct and plan for mass transit projects, including a future High Speed Rail between Tampa and Orlando. Garling has a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science and a master’s of public administration degree, both from Iowa State University.
