2016-2017 Intramurals Week 2 Power Rankings According to David Hrusovsky The views expressed in this article are not endorsed by the commissioner of intramurals (listed from worst to first) 11. Purple Cobras (last week’s ranking: 10) The Purple Cobras just couldn’t beat the Sea Cucumbers. In their game the Sea Cucumbers out-rebounded them 22-16, and the Cobras out-air-balled the Sea Cucumbers 6-0. Those numbers definitely do not equal a good power ranking. Antonio McCoy had two solid games this week, putting himself in the Top 10 in 3-pointers, assists, and PER. Pitcole struggled against the Cucumbers, hoisting up three air balls. Probably not ideal. They’ll have a chance to redeem themselves when they play the Sea Cucumbers again on the final day of the regular season. But for now, it seems like the Purple Cobras have locked in the #11 spot. 10. Sea Cucumbers (11) In the battle of the winless, the Sea Cucumbers came out on top. The team pulled out a win against the Purple Cobras to put themselves at the #10 spot. David Busch and Charlie Jagusen killed it in rebounds this week. A big portion of their scoring is coming from Mike Montie. If this team can continue playing like this, they’ll lock in the spot for top freshmen team of the year. 9. Polar Bears (9) The Polar Bears are doing exactly as I predicted. They’re only beating the freshmen teams and then getting blown out by everyone else. Jake Albrecht is putting up all-star numbers, but other than that, there really isn’t anyone really putting anything other than bricks. Chemistry issues resulted in Brian Kusznir being traded to the Chill for John Spooner and Josh Almo. That was definitely a great trade for the Chill. But it might not work out so well for the Polar Bears. You take your second best player and trade him for two players in the Top 6 in turnovers. I understand that it was a trade because they had chemistry issues, but still, they could’ve gotten more with that deal. 8. Anchorage Chill (8): Like I said previously, the Kusznir trade was a major success for the Chill. They get a great scorer in Kusznir, and it also gives Kanje Armstrong a chance to make it to the games. Now with Armstrong being able to make it to games, the Chill are going to be tough to beat. In his first appearance of the season, Armstrong tallied up 7 points and 8 rebounds. A great contribution to an already good team. They will definitely be a force to be reckoned with now. They did however lose to the Stingrays this week as well, so they are given the 8th spot. 7. Stingrays (6) Like last week, both the EALES and Stingrays could’ve either been at the 6-7 spot. But the seventh place team goes to the Stingrays this week. Their first half shutout tradition was changed to the second half in their game against the Chill, where they chilled the Chill to the limit of only 3 points. Dillard and Miles are still destroying any opponent in their path. Miles still is still leading D2 in rebounds, rebounds per game, and has the highest PER of any student in both divisions. They were good this week, but weren’t as dominant as the EALES. 6. Ecuadorian EALES (7) The EALES just completely destroyed the Purple Cobras. That’s the only reason why they’re above the Stingrays this week is because they won by 17. Smolik and Zimmer are destroying the boards and are carrying their team to victory. The Cobras had no chance of winning. A tough remaining schedule (a rematch with the Stingrays and a date with the D1 Spiny Lumpsuckers on back to back days in January) could bring the EALES back the pack in D2. 5. ExLonghorns (4) This team can just not pull out a win. None of their shots are falling and they are playing bad defense. They got destroyed against the Righteous Bros. and even had to quit before the game even ended. If they keep this up, they’ll end up below D2 teams in power rankings. They need more passing and playtime from Aaron Hammer-Huber. With limited minutes from Double H, the team has definitely seen performance problems. They need to pick it up if they want to make it to the Finals. 4. Spiny Lumpsuckers (3) The Lumpsuckers are doing pretty well. Between them and the Grizzlies though, the Grizzlies had a better performance. The Air Buddies just completely blew them out. Kleuver’s turnovers really killed them. McCartney and Zimmer are still playing solid with good numbers. Clark has been surprising too. But it still wasn’t enough to save them from that loss against the Air Buddies. They really need to improve on passing. Last game, they had 0 assists. Definitely a factor for losing. They need to improve on the ballhandling and passing if they want to win. 3. Grizzlies (2) The Grizzlies didn’t have it in them to beat the Righteous Bros. Nick Moore is still putting up great scoring numbers and Langner is doing great on rebounds. But then again, the RB’s had Ranc. Ranc pretty much equals guaranteed loss. If it had been against another opponent, they would have been #2 possibly. But because it wasn’t, they’re at #3. I have a good feeling that we will be seeing them in the finals this year. 2. Air Buddies (1) The Air Buddies are destroying anyone in their path. In their game against the Lumpsuckers, 5 players had 7+ points. That sort of teamwork definitely equals a win. Their turnovers ratio against the Lumpsuckers was 1-4. That sort of play is great and obviously championship-worthy. The only reason they’re #2 is just the complete dominance of the RB’s. 1._Righteous Bros (5) Wow. What a week for the Righteous Bros. After losing their first game in a very long time, they came back to have an unreal 2 games. They played so well against the ExLonghorns, the ExLonghorns had to quit out of sheer embarrassment. Fenske and Cal Thomay destroyed the boards. Fenske single-handedly out-rebounded them 14-15. Their second game, with Ranc this time, was undoubtedly going to result in a W. Unless there is a problem with attendance again, there is no way this team is losing again this season.
