As I settled down to write a letter to my pen friend, my thoughts drifted to the few days that
she had spent with me. I could not help smiling at the hilarious situation that had occurred
because she was unable to communicate with the locals here.
Coming from a rural province in India, Sharin was unaccustomed to the lifestyle in
Singapore. As I was in school in the daytime, Sharin was left to explore the country on her
own. Armed with a map and a lot of coins for travelling on the bus and train, Sharin
decided to travel from one end of Singapore to another. In this way, she would be able to
see more of the city state and its people. She did not mind as she was an independent
person.
Thinking that the bus service worked exactly like the ones in her hometown, Sharin
shouted for the driver to stop when she wanted to alight. Imagine the stunned expressions
on other passengers‟ faces and the look of disbelief on the bus drivers‟. Not only was she
unable to alight, some people started whispering and pointing at her.
I burst into hysterical laughter when she related the incident to me. She was so humiliated
that she immediately got off at the next stop and took the train back to my house instead.
Consoling her, I promised to be her companion during the weekend. Sharing spent the next

However, he can be ranked along with Alexander and Napolean as one of the greatest
military geniuses. Temujin, who later became Genghis Khan, was the son of a minor
Mongolian chieftain. He was orphaned at the age of eight and lived in constant danger from
his father‟s enemies. In his teens, he began to build a power base amongst the scattered
Mongolian tribes.
There were no foot soldiers in his army. Every man was a cavalryman and riding with a
