Coach Observation November 2013

CPD Assessment form
Date: 13/11/13
School: St Matthews Primary School
Coach: Ashley Jackson
Observer: Chris Stewart
Coaches appearance and manner in school – how they control the children when moving around
school, professionalism with school staff




Smart in full Sports (UK) uniform.
Good feedback from staff about Ashley.
Ashley conducts the children well when moving through school.
Entering the hall – children ran past Ashley into the hall and started to swing their bags.
This needs to be addressed and the children should walk into the hall sensibly to help set
the tone for the lesson. If they run into the hall, they must ALL line back up and re-enter
sensibly.
Coaching Behaviour – the behaviour of the coach, language used, clarity of instructions




Very clear and well-paced instructions using language that was easy to understand and
appropriate to the age of the pupils.
Ashley should try to think ahead about what it is he asks the children to do – giving them
a countdown to get into a space will make them rush, telling them to walk calmly to find a
space would be more appropriate.
A lot of the language used was too negative, try to incorporate positivity, they should
want to impress you. Moaning about bad behaviour doesn’t work as well as highlighting
and encouraging good behaviour.
Good use of questioning to check the pupils understood their objectives.
Organisation – Class management, positioning, setting up/ tidying


Always positioned well so the whole class could be observed and spoken to at once.
Little equipment used for this particular PE topic so set up times were minimal.
1
Discipline/Behaviour management – Rewards, warning system




Being strict and enforcing discipline does not necessarily mean loud. Other tactics such as
silence and speaking to individuals quietly but sternly, away from their friends, can be
very effective.
Ashley needs to think about how much he plays the joker, this can be confusing for the
children.
Ashley needs to demand silence at times, do not speak when others are talking.
Reward good behaviour – small amounts of praise were given, Ashley should try give out
rewards.
Lesson content – Clear objectives, flow, maximum class activity, plenary








Lesson objectives outlined at the start to recap the previous lesson.
Jumping was this lessons topic – warm up was nicely linked to the main activities.
Technical points were given to individuals and the whole class throughout the lesson.
Although is it just the knee that bends on landing? For year 6 I would suggest talking
about ankle knee and hip flexing during take-off and landing - a bit more detail.
Pupils were used to demonstrate activities.
Activity levels were not as high as they could have been, Ashley spent a little too much
time talking. Maximum Class activity needs to be an area to improve on –
20%discussion:80%activity.
Not really appropriate to use someone to do a demonstration who is a visitor to the
school to carry out an observation?
Good Plenary and also discussed what may be covered next lesson.
At the end of the lesson before dismissal I suggest positioning the boys in one single line
and request silence rather than them being spread out in small groups.
Safety – area, equipment, activities, tactics





Good warm up and safety briefing given on how to land – maybe consider doing a mass
practice of jumping and landing quietly to help encourage soft landing.
Activities were appropriate for the ability and environment.
Good control of class maintained throughout.
Footwear was good for the majority however there were a few (Mainly boys) not wearing
appropriate trainers.
As stated earlier, boys running into the hall with bags swinging.

General comments



Ashley is a very competent coach and is doing a good job at St Matthews with good
feedback from staff.
In a few weeks a new clear behaviour policy will be endorsed by the school so Ashley
must ensure he is up to speed and adhering to the new policy.
Is the HAKA an appropriate choice of dance if 6W cannot behave?
Areas to consider
 Loud and shouting doesn’t necessarily mean strict or disciplined. Calm and stern can be
as effective if not more so and add another dimension to your character.
 Reduce the amount jokey banter included in the lesson particularly with 6W as they
seemed to be confused between switching from having a laugh and Ashley trying to be
strict.
 Increase activity levels (Maximum Class Activity) this will help keep the children engaged –
20%discussion:80%activity.
 Try to enforce doing the activities quietly, splitting the class so they operate boy/girl may
help reduce silly behaviour.
