Mathematics Assessment Stage D-

POLYGON PERIMETERS AND AREAS
Performance Standard (7A/7B).D
Create four polygons with a given perimeter and calculate the area of each polygon accordingly:
• Mathematical knowledge: Know how to create an accurate representation of a polygon with a given perimeter
and how to calculate its area.
• Strategic knowledge: Use appropriate strategies to draw four shapes, each of which has a perimeter of 30 units
and determine the area of each.
• Explanation: Explain completely and clearly what was done and why it was done.

4.
In order to measure and compare quantities using appropriate units, instruments and methods (7A) and
estimate measurements and determine acceptable levels of accuracy (7B), students should experience
sufficient learning opportunities to develop the following:
• Create an accurate representation of a polygon with a given perimeter or area.
• Develop and discuss strategies for estimating the perimeters, areas, and volumes of regular and non-regular
shapes.
Provide each student with a copy of the “Polygon Perimeters and Areas” recording sheet and the rubric. Have
students review and discuss the task to be completed and how the rubric will be used to evaluate it.
Direct students to complete the two parts of the task:
• Part A: Draw and label four shapes that have a perimeter of 30 units and tell why each shape has a
perimeter of 30 units.
• Part B: Determine the area of each of the four shapes and explain how the area of each shape was
determined.
Evaluate each student’s work using the rubric as follows and use the guide on the rubric to determine the
performance level.
• 4 = All four shapes were drawn and labeled, and the area calculations were correct; strategies were
appropriate; explanations were complete and clear.
• 3 = The four shapes were drawn and labeled, or the area calculations included minor mistakes, but not in
both; strategies were for the most part, appropriate; explanations were mostly complete and clear.
• 2 = The four shapes were drawn and labeled, and the area calculations included minor mistakes; some of
the strategies were appropriate; some explanations were not adequate.
• 1 = The four shapes were drawn and labeled, or the area calculations included major mistakes; strategies
were for the most part, inappropriate; explanations were incomplete and unclear.
• 0 = Task was not attempted.

CREATE PERIMETER AND DETERMINE AREA
Part A: Draw and label four different shapes that have a perimeter of 30 units. Write the reason
you believe each shape has a perimeter of 30 units on the back of this sheet.
Part B: Now, determine the area of each shape you made. Explain how you determined the
area of each shape. (Correct and complete labels are very important.)
