NEWSLETTER 16
w/e 27th January 2017
Dear Parents,
Please see below for this week’s updates.
Preschool
Thank you very much for all the milk bottles our “igloo” is now finished so we won’t need anymore. This week
we have been reading “Little Red Riding Hood” and singing “Humpty Dumpty”, the children are learning the
rhymes with enthusiasm and loving role playing the stories. We will be holding 10 minute parent consultations
over the coming two weeks before half term, please see your child’s key worker to make an appointment.
Also, please name all coats, hats, gloves and boots as we have had several mix ups this week!
Reception
In Reception this week the children have had lots of fun learning about how to catch a dragon. They have
looked at how to write instructions and even had a go at writing their own ideas of how we could catch a
dragon. We haven't caught one yet though! They have also taken part in the school's exciting writing task.
They wrote fantastic individual letters to the man on the moon. We hope he replies! In maths this week we
have been learning how to add and take away. The children are working hard to understand this tricky
concept. Next week, we will also be using number lines to count on and back to find the answer. We will
also be learning about the story of Rapunzel. The children will be visited by the school nurse on
Wednesday to measure their height and weight.
Reception’s learning journals have been sent out this week to those parents who have accepted the email
invitation. There are a few pupils whose file we have not been able to send as we require your
authorisation. If you have not received this, please check with the office to ensure they have a valid email
address for you.
Next, we will be watching parts of the film Tangled in class. This film is rated a PG. If you have any
concerns regarding your child watching this then please let your class teacher know ASAP. Many thanks
Year 1
What a variety of things we have come across this week including Exciting Writing in which we wrote a
letter to the Man on the Moon with our ideas on how to get down. We innovated our stories and tried to
build the suspense by using intriguing words. We came across the words 'Democracy' and 'Healthy Eating'
so feel free to ask us about what we know of these things...
We also found out how people celebrate Chinese New Year which was at the weekend and why they use
the colour red so much! We had an amazing science lesson on how to scientifically group animals but we
didn't find many in the playground. Perhaps you can go on a hunt at the weekends. We are looking forward
to this coming week as Maple class have Forest Ranger School on Wednesday.
Year 2
It has been a varied and interesting week in Year 2. In our Space topic, we looked at the life and
achievements of Neil Armstrong and produced a related timeline. In English, we researched the planets
and chose one, about which to create a Factfile with illustrations. In Maths, we worked on ‘finding the
difference’ and simple money problems, many children moving on to add two digit numbers by counting on
in 10s and 1s. We linked the Science work with our Space topic, by hypothesising if plants would survive in
space and how to test out our theories. Of course, we had our theatre visit on Thursday and the children
adored seeing The Twits on stage – a lovely day.

Updates from the Office
New Morning Protocol – Blue gates to close at 08.55am
Please note, the school day starts at 8:50am and all children should be in school by that time. Following
requests from the teachers, as of tomorrow, Tuesday 31st January, procedures will be implemented with
more rigour whereby the blue gates will be locked at 8.55am. The register will be taken in class at 9am.
This is to ensure that phonics lessons can start promptly and the site is secured. Anyone arriving late will
need to come in via the office where you will be asked to complete a blue form to explain the reason for the
lateness. There is rarely anyone who arrives after this time and it helps us with keeping our site secure.
Parents’ Evening
The teachers look forward to welcoming parents on Tuesday 31st January and Wednesday 8th February
in school for the Spring term parents’ evening. Bookings are now 96% full but if you have been unable to
login to the system please give the School Office a ring or pop in and they will be able to set up an
appointment for you. Children’s books will be available for you to look through.
Star of the Week
We are really proud to let you know that this week’s the Star of the week is Alfie from Oak class and the
Writer of the week is Lennon from Cherry class. Well done to Alfie and Lennon for all their hard work.
Usborne books
Over a £1000 worth of books were donated via the Gift-A-Book fundraising event, which was ran by Mrs
Stacey from Usborne Books, to Prestwood Infants and Junior Schools by both parents and local
businesses. This replenishes our libraries with up-to-date fiction and non-fiction books. A massive thank
you to all those involved in organising and everyone who supported this event.
Save the Children - Christmas Jumper Day
As a school we raised £152.50 which is really great so thank you all for your contributions on behalf of
Save the Children, registered charity England and Wales (213890).
Kind regards
Miss Amanda Cook
