Dear ___,
I am emailing you as a campaigner for the Ann Arbor YMCA’s Annual Campaign. The Y
means a lot to me: so much, in fact, that I am giving both my time and treasure to support
this organization that does so much in our community. I’d like to ask you to do the same.
I’ve included a story to illustrate how the Y has positively impacted a child this year. In
2016, 3765 children were taught to swim at the Ann Arbor YMCA, 640 of them receiving one
week of free Safety Around Water classes at no charge. Here is a story of one family that
participated in that program:
Margaret is really happy she brought her children Jamar (8) and Jayla (11) to the Ann Arbor
YMCA from Ypsilanti, where the family lives. Jamar especially has been really afraid of
water all his life, but now, on Day 3 of classes, he is feeling “way more comfortable”. To
demonstrate, he enthusiastically blows some bubbles and smiles. Margaret doesn’t swim
herself, but recognizes that it is really important, especially here in Michigan where one is
never far from the water. “I’m so grateful for this free program. I see my kids learning
how to survive in the water, and I know that this skill is going to last them a lifetime.”
Swimming is an essential life skill, and Safety Around Water, offered to the community free
of charge is one way that the Y seeks to impact our community, one family at a time. This
summer, thanks to your donations, Margaret and her children will be more confident, and
safer around the water. Please consider making a donation to the Ann Arbor YMCA’s Annual
Campaign. $100 allows a child to attend one week of day camp, $250 enables a single
working parent to receive one month of after school child care at the Y and $500 sends a
kid to Camp Al-Gon-Quian for a week. Every gift makes a difference! Thank you so much
for your consideration. To donate, please go to www.annarborymca.org/give. Thank you.

Declan (4) and Jimmy (5) can hardly contain their excitement. Declan does a full-body
demonstration (on land) of going under the water and blowing bubbles. Not to be outdone,
Jimmy asserts, “I CAN FLOAT”. Their mother Leslie, beaming behind them confides, “This is
the first time that Declan hasn’t cried before going in the water. The kids can’t wait to come
and then they hop right in!” There’s no more time to talk because the boys are eager to
swim, and with that, they disappear into the locker room.

Keiwann has worked as a lifeguard in Detroit, and is well aware of the importance of
teaching kids to be safe around water. It’s never too early, so when he heard about the Y’s
free Safety Around Water program he made sure to sign up his 10 month old son Maeson.
Keiwann looks on proudly from the pool deck as the baby splashes in the water with his
mother. “He’s a natural! That baby doesn’t cry at all here, he loves it!”

“I’m not going.” That was Lydia (7) last week before actually beginning her swim classes
during the Y’s Safety Around Water classes. Cut to Wednesday, three classes in and there
she is, splashing in the pool with her new friends, laughing and looking relaxed. Her mom
says, “She feels safe with the teacher and is really having a good time. No more
complaining! She’s already put her face in the water, so who knows what she’ll be able to

Jordan (7) is splashing in the water, bobbing up and down and playing with her new friends.
Her grandmother watches with a pleased smile. This is Jordan’s second year attending the
Y’s free Safety Around Water classes in Ypsilanti, and even though she wasn’t able to take
other swim lessons during the school year, it’s clear that the enthusiasm she found last year
never faded away. “We’ve never actually been to the Y in Ann Arbor, but it sure is nice and
convenient to have the swim lessons here close to where the kids live. Before she started
with the Y, Jordan was shy and timid, but look at her now!

Marlon, Devin’s dad, looks on with something close to amazement. This is Devin’s second

“I want to pass the swim test at camp so I can go in the deep end!” he declares. “This
summer I went to camp for the first time and all the kids were swimming: it looked so fun,
but I don’t know how YET.” He is watching the younger kids’ lesson, straining to pick up
some hints so when it gets to be his turn he will now what to do.

(14), Humble (12), and Merlyne (9) to the Safety Around Water classes at the Golfside Lake
Apartment classes in Ypsilanti. None of the kids, nor Yvonne, know how to swim and they
all look a little intimidated but HOT! Rose, the eldest, whispers that she wants to “swim
everywhere”, her sister Merlyne just wants to go where her friends go and Humble wants to
pass a swim test when he goes to camp. Yvonne, who doesn’t swim, just wants all of her
children to be safe. The family has heard about the different water parks and pools that are
not that far away, and they would love to take advantage of them during this hot summer.

learn to swim!” Samir’s children Ahmed (6) and Sama (4) are not quite ready for the
