ance o f the s p e c i f i c r e g u l a t i o n i n v o l v e d , but a
l a c k o f a p p r e c i a t i o n o f the t r u e meaning o f d i e - \
c i p l i n e , and t h i s extends n o t o n l y to the N .C .O 's
and men, but to the o f f i c e r s as w e l l .

The most common o f f e n c e t h a t I have to de al
w i t h i s , "Absence Without L e a v e " - and, i n t t h e
p a s t , I have a llo w e d my Company Commanders con­
s i d e r a b l e l a t i t u d e in d e a l i n g w i t h crises o f t h i s
n a t u r e ; b u t , on account o f the p r e v a l e n c e o f t h i s
o f f e n c e , I have r e c e n t l y i s s u e d i n s t r u c t i o n s t h a t
c a s e s must be b r o u g h t to B a t t a l i o n O r d e r l y Room,
u n l e s s i t can be c l e a n l y e s t a b l i s h e d t h a t the c i r ­
cumstances a t t e n d i n g the absence were beyond the
c o n t r o l o f the i n d i v i d u a l concerned.
In the c a s e s o f w i l f u l absence,my r u l e i s to
award one d a y ’ s d e t e n t i o n f o r e v e r y day a b s e n t , and,
i n the c a s e o f s i c k n e s s , a M e d ic al O ^ f i e i r o a t e i s

(b) His c o n v i c t i o n by c o u r t - m a r t i a l , or the o r d e r d i s p e n s i n g
w i t h h i s t r i a l , i s such as to e n t a i l a f o r f e i t u r e o f
former s e r v i c e towards engagement.
In such c a s e s , the
