The Sweet Auburn Historic
District is a historic AfricanAmerican neighborhood along
and surrounding Auburn
Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia.
Sweet Auburn was one of the earliest centers
of African-American enterprise in the country
and was dubbed the “richest Negro street in the
world.” It was in Sweet Auburn that many African
Americans established businesses, congregations,
and social organizations. It is also the place
where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born, raised,
lived, worked and worshiped, and where he is
buried. Today, it reflects the history, heritage and
achievements of Atlanta’s African Americans.
Sweet Auburn is home to historic buildings, local
businesses and cultural institutions.

The Streetcar is Atlanta’s newest transportation system and has
