PRIZE WINNERS 2017 Association of the Music Instrument and Music Equipment Industry DIVISION I – MUSICAL WORK IN THE CLASSROOM Cat. 1: Musical work in the classroom, Grades 1–4 Prize winner: Freie Grundschule Wernigerode Project title: (Um)wege zur Musiktheorie Project management: Simone Drebenstedt Project Description: The project "(Um)wege zur Musiktheorie", under direction of Simone Drebenstedt, documents various possibilities for the pupil-centered imparting of music theory. Using a canon as an example, the basic understanding for tune and rhythm was deepened in an activity-oriented manner, and the sensorial skills of the pupils were expanded through problem-oriented didactics. The work steps included elaboration of the melody playing by ear on boomwhackers, application of "page bar notation" for visualization of melody and rhythm, and the development of own "boom notation tools", as well as the manufacturing of own sound tubes with boomwhacker color markings for longlasting understanding of tone pitches, and the final execution of the canon, for instance in the string class lessons. Jury Argumentation: The project "(Um)wege zur Musiktheorie" at the Freie Grundschule Wernigerode captivates through a good and logical linking of music theory to music practice that enables the children to work independently. The teacher Simone Drebenstedt was able to involve all pupils in the work process and strengthen their motivation, independent work, self-responsibility and team spirit. Especially the hearing-guided instrument making should be highlighted, which convinced and impressed the Jury. A well elaborated, child-oriented concept that can be applied to other classes/schools.
